Immunological and ultrastructural characterization of spirotrichonymphid flagellates from Reticulitermes grassei and R. flavipes (syn. R. santonensis…
2006
AbstractFive species of spirotrichonymphids representing three genera have been studied by light and immunofluorescence microscopy, and by transmission electron microscopy. The genus Spirotrichonympha, represented by S. flagellata from Reticulitermes grassei, is characterized by a compound axostyle composed of several fibers or subaxostyles. The genus Spironympha, represented by S. kofoidi from Reticulitermes flavipes (syn. R. santonensis) and by the two new species S. verticis and S. lanceata, is characterized by flagellar lines restricted to the anterior area and a simple, tubular axostyle. Spironympha verticis and S. lanceata are mainly distinguished by ultrastructural details of their f…
Wound-induced responses in leaves of strawberry cultivars differing in susceptibility to spider mite
2002
Summary The effect of leaf detachment and wounding on the activities of oxidative enzymes and ethylene production was studied in strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) cultivars, differing in susceptibility to the spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch.). Strawberry plants were cultivated during winter in two growth conditions - with and without overwintering, in greenhouse and laboratory, respectively. Polyphenol oxidase activity, peroxidase activity and catalase activity in strawberry leaves depended on the cultivar analysed, type of treatment (detachment or detachment and wounding), as well as on plant growth conditions. Activities of all analysed enzymes were higher in control plants grown in …
Contrasting effects ofWolbachiaon cytoplasmic incompatibility and fecundity in the haplodiploid miteTetranychus urticae
2002
Recent studies on Wolbachia-induced incompatibility in haplodiploid insects and mites have revealed a diversity of cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) patterns among host species. Here, we report intraspecific diversity in CI expression among four strains of the arrhenotokous mite Tetranychus urticae and in T. turkestani. Variability of CI expression within T. urticae ranged from no CI to complete CI, and included either female embryonic mortality or male conversion types of CI. A fecundity cost attributed to the infection with the high-CI Wolbachia strain was the highest ever recorded for Wolbachia (−80 to −100% decrease). Sequence polymorphism at a 550-bp-portion of Wolbachia wsp gene reveal…
AB1358 Infectious antibodies repertoire in rheumatoid arthritis
2018
Background The incidence of infectious diseases in the RA ADAPTHERA study by ELISA antibody screening and the differences in infectious distribution in active or low active disease patients was explored. Methods Sera from 88 naive RA patients out of the ADAPTHERA study cohort, disease duration Results 82% RA patients were found to be positive for HSV1 +2 IgG (2% IgM positive), 8% for Adenovirus (IgA), 77% (IgG), and 1% (IgM). 99% for EBV-IgG (no IgM positive). 53% (IgG), and 26% (IgM) for CMV. 38% for HP-IgG and 15% for IgA and 79% for P-B19-IgG (3% IgM). 6% for Borrelia-IgM and 14% for IgG. A slightly increase was found for EBV sera positivity (99% IgG), compared to the normal population. …
Latvijas parādu vērtspapīru tirgus analīze un attīstības perspektīvas
2016
A System-based View of Blockchain Governance
2023
Abstract CONTEXT Governance is crucial in achieving the success and sustainability of blockchain systems. However, blockchain governance is multi-faceted, complex, dynamic, and challenging due to its decentralized nature and automatically enforced rules and mechanisms. OBJECTIVES This study aims to advance the theory of blockchain governance and support practitioners to deepen the researchers’ and practitioners’ understanding of blockchain governance. METHODS The study is a systematic literature review of 75 articles that applies systems theory to conceptualize blockchain governance as a system and parsimoniously organize its interrelated elements into a conceptual model. RESULTS The paper …
On the dark side of lifestyle blogging : the case of negative anonyms
2018
The social reciprocity between bloggers and their readers included in lifestyle blogs is inspired by casual exchange of information, opinions, and emotional support. Despite the obvious positive connotations, the world of lifestyle blogging also has a darker side to it. A negative anonym is recognized by bloggers as a reader who comments behind a pseudonym and distributes critical or abusive comments targeted against bloggers’ physical appearance, personality, life choices, or commercial collaborations. Bloggers are often regarded as influencers of social media. In this study, however, the perspective is reversed as I explore some of the ways bloggers are influenced by their readers. peerRe…
The role of mycotoxins in neurodegenerative diseases: current state of the art and future perspectives of research
2021
Abstract Mycotoxins are fungal metabolites that can cause various diseases in humans and animals. The adverse health effects of mycotoxins such as liver failure, immune deficiency, and cancer are well-described. However, growing evidence suggests an additional link between these fungal metabolites and neurodegenerative diseases. Despite the wealth of these initial reports, reliable conclusions are still constrained by limited access to human patients and availability of suitable cell or animal model systems. This review summarizes knowledge on mycotoxins associated with neurodegenerative diseases and the assumed underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. The limitations of the common in vivo…
The Importance of Multilingual Information and Plain English in Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic
2021
Health is a common issue for all human beings. As a consequence, everyone in the world has in some way to cope with the language of medicine. This is true now more than ever due to the global health crisis caused by the current COVID-19 pandemic, which has introduced a great amount of terms, previously mostly used by epidemiologists and statisticians, but which now have entered the daily lexicon of many languages. As the medium of international scientific communication, English is the language of worldwide information about the pandemic, and the main source of terms and expressions for other languages. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on English lexicon has been so deep that the Oxford E…
FAST EDGE-FILTERED IMAGE UPSAMPLING.
2011
We present a novel edge preserved interpolation scheme for fast upsampling of natural images. The proposed piecewise hyperbolic operator uses a slope-limiter function that conveniently lends itself to higher-order approximations and is responsible for restricting spatial oscillations arising due to the edges and sharp details in the image. As a consequence the upsampled image not only exhibits enhanced edges, and discontinuities across boundaries, but also preserves smoothly varying features in images. Experimental results show an improvement in the PSNR compared to typical cubic, and spline-based interpolation approaches.
