Biohydrology research after Landau 2013 conference

2014

Biohydrology gives a new view on hydrological research. The impact of biota on hydrological processes was a disregarded topic in the early years of hydrology research. It has been present since the 1960s, but as a „Cinderella“ research topic. It emerged as a new aspect of the hydrological processes after the 1980s. In the 21st century, it has become a well established research topic, bringing new knowledge to aid understanding on how biota influence the hydrological cycle and the rates of hydrological processes. The importance of biohydrology research is growing, and the number of conferences, publications and research projects is being doubled every decade. The 4th Biohydrology conference,…

Enzyme recovery and fouling mitigation by ultrasound-enhanced ultrafiltration

2013

Abstract The development of second-generation biofuels from cellulosic/lignocellulosic biomass has advantages from energy and environmental aspects, but the overall cost of the process is mainly dependent on the cost of the enzymes. Enzyme recovery and recycling is one of the most important and effective means of increasing the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis processes by lowering the enzyme costs. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the possibilities of enzyme recovery by membrane separation. Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with various cut-off values and materials were used to recycle cellulase and cellobiase in model solutions and cellulosic hydrolysates. The membran…

High boreal forest multifunctionality requires continuous cover forestry as a dominant management

2021

Intensive extraction of forest resources lowers biodiversity and endangers the functioning of forest ecosystems. As such, alternative management regimes have emerged, aspiring to promote forest biodiversity and nature protection in managed forests. Among them, continuous cover forestry, (i.e. selective logging), has received considerable attention and is being promoted by some researchers and NGOs. Yet, the full consequences of banning clear-cuts (i.e. rotation forestry) and replacing it entirely with continuous cover forest remains uncertain. We explore how restricting forest management alternatives (either rotation forestry or continuous cover forestry) will affect landscape-scale forest …

Development of national climate and adaptation policy in Latvia

2009

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyse the development and character of climate policy in Latvia with a special emphasis on policy instruments.Design/methodology/approachIn order to implement policies and measures effectively and monitor progress in achieving its mitigation targets, Latvia uses a wide mix of policy instruments, including regulations (e.g. environmental impact assessment procedures, environmental permits and standards, restrictions and prohibitions), economic and fiscal instruments (the natural resources tax, the excise tax for energy resources, user's charges), and voluntary agreements, also raising public awareness.FindingsThe combination of the policy instruments …

Graphical THD minimization procedure for single phase five-level converters

2017

This paper proposes two graphycal procedure to mitigate h harmonics and to minimize the total harmonic distortion (THD), respectively. The paper considers a five-level inverter and fundamental frequency modulation: it computes the two switching angles able to reduce low order harmonics and able to minimize the THD. Simulation results are obtained and, in order to validate the proposed procedure, an experimental prototype is built and experimental results are carried out. The comparison between simulation and experimental results confirms the accuracy of the proposed graphycal procedure. It is shown that the switching angles to mitigate the third-fifth and the third-fifth-seventh harmonics e…

Physically-based and distributed approach to analyze rainfall-triggered landslides at watershed scale

2011

Abstract Landslides are a serious threat to life and property throughout the world. The causes of landslides are various since multiple dynamic processes are involved in driving slope failures. One of these causes is prolonged rainfall, which affects slope stability in different ways. Water infiltrating in a hillslope may cause a rise of the piezometric surface, which, in turn, involves an increase of the pore water pressure and a decrease of the soil shear resistance. For this reason, knowledge of spatio-temporal dynamics of soil water content, infiltration processes and groundwater dynamics, is of considerable importance in the understanding and prediction of landslides dynamics. In this …

Mitigating-casi: relation between propositional content and discourse units

2018

This paper explores the mitigating function of Spanish casi and its relation to the discourse units casi fulfills in spoken language. Casi can either entail a polar inversion of the proposition it h…

Primacía epistémica en géneros interaccionales: atenuación, intensificación y territorio

2018
