Four-phase patterns in a forced nonlinear optical oscillator

2009

We present preliminary theoretical and experimental results indicating that a high Fresnel number nonlinear optical oscillator with planar mirrors can display four-phase multistability, eventually leading to four-phase patterns. Such situation is similar to that emerging in extended oscillatory systems forced within a 4:1 resonance and, to the best of our knowledge, has not been predicted nor observed previously in an optical system.

Global fits of the SM parameters

2019

I present a global survey of weak mixing angle measurements and other precision experiments and discuss the issue of correlations of the theoretical uncertainties in precision observables. Hadronic vacuum polarization effects complicate global fits in various ways and are also covered alongside some representative fit results.

Theory of Neutrino Masses and Mixing

2002

In this talk I will review our present knowledge on neutrino masses and mixing trying to emphasize what has been definitively proved and what is in the process of being probed. I will also discuss the most important theoretical implications of these results: the existence of new physics, the estimate of the scale of this new physics as well as some other possible consequences such as leptogenesis origin of the baryon asymmetry.

Neutrinos confronting large extra dimensions

2001

We study neutrino physics in a model with one large extra dimension. We assume the existence of two four-dimensional branes in the five-dimensional space-time, one for the ordinary particles and the other one for mirror particles, and we investigate neutrino masses and mixings in this scheme. Comparison of experimental neutrino data with the predictions of the model leads to various restrictions on the parameters of the model. For instance, the size of the extra dimension, R, turns out to be bounded from below. Cosmological considerations seem to favor a large R. The usual mixing schemes proposed as solutions to the solar and atmospheric neutrino anomalies are compatible with our model.

Flavor vacuum entanglement in boson mixing

2021

Mixing transformations in quantum field theory are non-trivial, since they are intimately related to the unitary inequivalence between Fock spaces for fields with definite mass and fields with definite flavor. Considering the superposition of two neutral scalar (spin-0) bosonic fields, we investigate some features of the emerging condensate structure of the flavor vacuum. In particular, we quantify the flavor vacuum entanglement in terms of the von Neumann entanglement entropy of the reduced state. Furthermore, in a suitable limit, we show that the flavor vacuum has a structure akin to the thermal vacuum of Thermo Field Dynamics, with a temperature dependent on both the mixing angle and the…

Optical hysteresis in a semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator

2007

International audience; High contrast optical bistability is found experimentally in the pump-ratio dependences of the output intensity of a semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator with two counterpropagating pump waves. The data are in qualitative agreement with the results of calculation.

Simultaneous analysis of neutrinoless double beta decay and LHC pp-cross sections: limits on the left-right mixing angle

2015

The extension of the Standard Model of electroweak interactions, to accommodate massive neutrinos and/or right-handed currents, is one of the fundamental questions to answer in the cross-field of particle and nuclear physics. The consequences of such extensions would reflect upon nuclear decays, like the very exotic nuclear double-beta-decay, as well as upon high-energy proton-proton reactions of the type performed at the LHC accelerator. In this talk we shall address this question by looking at the results reported by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, where the excitation and decay of a heavy-mass boson may be mediated by a heavy-mass neutrino in proton-proton reactions leading to two jets…

Probingθ13with global neutrino data analysis

2010

We discuss the results of an updated global analysis of neutrino oscillation data, focusing on the determination of θ13, the smallest and unknown leptonic mixing angle. We discuss three independent and converging hints of θ13 > 0: a first one coming from atmospheric neutrino data; a second one from the combination of solar and long-baseline reactor (KamLAND) neutrino data; and a third one from the latest MINOS measurements in the appearance (νμ → νe) channel. Their combination provides an indication for θ13 > 0 at the 2σ (95% C.L.) level.

CP violation and the H-A lineshape

2007

In two-Higgs doublet models (and particularly in the MSSM) the CP-even (H) and CP-odd (A) neutral scalars are nearly degenerate in mass, and their s-channel production would lead to nearly overlapping resonances. CP-violating effects may connect these two Higgs bosons, giving origin to one-loop particle mixing, which, due to their mass proximity, can be resonantly enhanced, altering their lineshape significantly. We show that, in general, the effect of such a CP-violating mixing cannot be mimicked by (or be re-absorbed into) a simple redefinition of the H and A masses in the context of a CP-conserving model. Specifically, the effects of the CP-mixing are such that, either the mass-splitting…
