Mixing Different Realities in a Single Shared Space

2019

The concept of internet of everything involves an intelligent connection of people, processes, data, and things. In this sense, shared spaces aimed to connect different users that collaborate following a common purpose are of relevance to the field. Many computer-based collaborative environments have been proposed in recent years. However, the design of mixed-platform collaborative spaces, in which different paradigms—such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR)—are blended, is still uncommon. This chapter aims to analyze the benefits and features of these systems, reviewing existing related works and proposing a series of features for the design of effective mixed-platform colla…

Observation of Optical Undular Bores in Multiple Four-Wave Mixing

2014

International audience; We demonstrate that wave-breaking dramatically affects the dynamics of nonlinear frequency conversion processes that operate in the regime of high efficiency (strong multiple four-wave mixing). In particular, by exploiting an all-optical-fiber platform, we show that input modulations propagating in standard telecom fibers in the regime of weak normal dispersion lead to the formation of undular bores (dispersive shock waves) that mimic the typical behavior of dispersive hydrodynamics exhibited, e.g., by gravity waves and tidal bores. Thanks to the nonpulsed nature of the beat signal employed in our experiment, we are able to clearly observe how the periodic nature of …

Asymptotic properties of incoherent waves propagating in an all-optical regenerators line

2007

International audience; We present an original method to generate optical pulse trains with random time-interval values from incoherent broadband sources. More precisely, our technique relies on the remarkable properties of a line made of cascaded self-phase modulation-based optical regenerators. Depending on the regenerator parameters, various regimes with noticeably different physical behaviors can be reported.

Impact of dust and smoke mixing on column-integrated aerosol properties from observations during a severe wildfire episode over Valencia (Spain)

2017

The most destructive wildfire experienced in Spain since 2004 occurred close to Valencia in summer 2012. A total of 48.500ha were affected by two wildfires, which were mostly active during 29-30 June. The fresh smoke plume was detected at the Burjassot measurement station simultaneously to a severe dust episode. We propose an empirical method to evaluate the dust and smoke mixing and its impact on the microphysical and optical properties. For this, we combine direct-sun measurements with a Cimel CE-318 sun-photometer with an inversion methodology, and the Mie theory to derive the column-integrated size distribution, single scattering albedo (SSA) and asymmetry parameter (g). The mixing of d…

Abstract. Biogenic NOx emissions from natural and anthropogenically influenced soils are currently estimated to amount to 9 Tg a−1, hence a significant fraction of global NOx emissions (45 Tg a−1). During the last three decades, a large number of field measurements have been performed to quantify biogenic NO emissions. To study biogenic NO emissions as a function of soil moisture, soil temperature, and soil nutrients, several laboratory approaches have been developed to estimate local/regional NO emissions by suitable upscaling. This study presents an improved and automated laboratory dynamic chamber system (consisting of six individual soil chambers) for investigation and quantification of…

Solutions of poly (decyl methacrylate) in isooctane (2,2, 4-trimethylpentane) show lower critical solution temperatures (LCST) that lie well below the thermal degradation of the polymer. The corresponding exothermal theta-temperature (from the Shultz-Flory plot) amounts to 210°C. The increase in solvent quality by pressure turns out to be very pronounced (d Tc/dp ≈ +1 K/bar). With solutions of the polymer in motor oils, high temperature demixing is unlikely to occur below their boiling point. The theoretical evaluation of published experimental data for 11 different systems exhibiting LCSTs demonstrates the following: Under the equilibrium vapour pressure of the solution high temperature de…

Phase diagrams calculated for flowing polymer solutions: spinodal and three phase conditions

1998

Spinodal lines and critical points (CPs) are calculated for flowing solutions of polystyrene in trans-decalin. Three types of CPs can be distinguished: The first consists of stable CPs (ordinary critical line) and originates from the CP of the quiescent system. The other two CPs are bound to shear. Additional stable CPs (extraordinary critical line) result for higher polymer concentrations and unstable CPs for intermediate concentrations. Ordinary and unstable critical line merge in a heterogeneous double CP. The coexistence of three phases in the flowing system (eulytic points) comes to an end as two of them merge upon an increase in shear rate at a critical end point.

Blind Source Separation Based on Joint Diagonalization in R: The Packages JADE and BSSasymp

2017

Blind source separation (BSS) is a well-known signal processing tool which is used to solve practical data analysis problems in various fields of science. In BSS, we assume that the observed data consists of linear mixtures of latent variables. The mixing system and the distributions of the latent variables are unknown. The aim is to find an estimate of an unmixing matrix which then transforms the observed data back to latent sources. In this paper we present the R packages JADE and BSSasymp. The package JADE offers several BSS methods which are based on joint diagonalization. Package BSSasymp contains functions for computing the asymptotic covariance matrices as well as their data-based es…

Phase separation in multi-component mixtures: the four-component case

2002

Abstract Calculation of ternary phase diagrams for several mixtures formed by two salts and a neutral component is presented here. The phase diagrams are obtained by inspection of the shape of the Gibbs free energy of mixing surface (Gmix) as a function of the composition at constant temperature and pressure. The Gmix surface is calculated by the mean spherical approximation (MSA). The model for the mixtures is represented by hard spheres, with the charged components interacting via a Coulomb potential. The results are interpreted in terms of a thermodynamic analysis of the contributions to the Gibbs free energy of mixing, i.e., the configurational energy, the volume and the entropy of mixi…
