Sorption of Pd(II) ion by calcium alginate gel beads at different chloride concentrations and pH. A kinetic and equilibrium study
2016
Abstract A kinetic and thermodynamic study on the sorption ability of calcium alginate gel beads towards Pd(II) ion was made in aqueous solution at different pH and chloride concentrations. The experimental conditions adopted in the sorption experiments were established on the basis of a speciation study on the Pd 2+ -AA system in which all the side reactions, such as the hydrolysis of Pd(II), the protonation of alginate and the interactions of the ligand and the metal ion with ions of ionic medium were taken into account. In the pH range 2–5 and at chloride concentration in the range 0 ⩽ C Cl - /mmol L −1 ⩽ 10 the gel beads showed good sorption ability towards Pd(II) ion as confirmed by k…
Distillation and stripping pilot plants for the JUNO neutrino detector: Design, operations and reliability
2019
Abstract This paper describes the design, construction principles and operations of the distillation and stripping pilot plants tested at the Daya Bay Neutrino Laboratory, with the perspective to adapt these processes, system cleanliness and leak-tightness standards to the final full scale plants to be used for the purification of the liquid scintillator of the JUNO neutrino detector. The main goal of these plants is to remove radio impurities from the liquid scintillator while increasing its optical attenuation length. Purification of liquid scintillator will be performed with a system combining alumina oxide, distillation, water extraction and steam (or N 2 gas) stripping. Such a combined…
Impact of contact lens material and design on the ocular surface.
2018
BACKGROUND: To evaluate the impact on the ocular surface of a daily disposable hydrogel contact lens with high water content compared with two silicone hydrogel daily disposable lenses of lower water content. METHODS: The hydrogel lens assessed was made from nesofilcon A and the silicone hydrogel lenses were made of delefilcon A and stenfilcon A. Contact lens thickness was measured to assess material stability during daily wear, and ocular surface parameters such as tear film osmolarity, tear meniscus area and central corneal thickness were also assessed. Optical quality was analysed for all cases by means of wavefront aberrometry. RESULTS: The nesofilcon A was shown to be the thinnest lens…
Adjuvant effects of aluminium hydroxide-adsorbed allergens and allergoids – differences in vivo and in vitro
2014
Summary Allergen-specific immunotherapy (SIT) is a clinically effective therapy for immunoglobulin (Ig)E-mediated allergic diseases. To reduce the risk of IgE-mediated side effects, chemically modified allergoids have been introduced. Furthermore, adsorbance of allergens to aluminium hydroxide (alum) is widely used to enhance the immune response. The mechanisms behind the adjuvant effect of alum are still not completely understood. In the present study we analysed the effects of alum-adsorbed allergens and allergoids on their immunogenicity in vitro and in vivo and their ability to activate basophils of allergic donors. Human monocyte derived dendritic cells (DC) were incubated with native …
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF BIO-BASED ASPHALT MIXTURES: LIFE CYCLE INVENTORY, LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Human Hsp60 with Its Mitochondrial Import Signal Occurs in Solution as Heptamers and Tetradecamers Remarkably Stable over a Wide Range of Concentrati…
2014
It has been established that Hsp60 can accumulate in the cytosol in various pathological conditions, including cancer and chronic inflammatory diseases. Part or all of the cytosolic Hsp60 could be naive, namely, bear the mitochondrial import signal (MIS), but neither the structure nor the in solution oligomeric organization of this cytosolic molecule has still been elucidated. Here we present a detailed study of the structure and self-organization of naive cytosolic Hsp60 in solution. Results were obtained by different biophysical methods (light and X ray scattering, single molecule spectroscopy and hydrodynamics) that all together allowed us to assay a wide range of concentrations of Hsp60…
Dynamic best spectral bands selection for face recognition
2014
In this paper, face recognition in uncontrolled illumination conditions is investigated. A twofold contribution is proposed. First, three state-of-art algorithms, namely Multiblock Local Binary Pattern (MBLBP), Histogram of Gabor Phase Patterns (HGPP) and Local Gabor Binary Pattern Histogram Sequence (LGBPHS) are evaluated upon the IRIS-M3 face database to study their robustness against a high illumination variation conditions. Second, we propose to use visible multispectral images, provided by the same face database, to enhance the performance of the three mentioned algorithms. To reduce the high data dimensionality introduced by the use of multispectral images, we have designed a system t…
Effects of activated carbon ageing in three PCB contaminated sediments: Sorption efficiency and secondary effects on Lumbriculus variegatus.
2015
The sorption efficiency and possible secondary effects of activated carbon (AC) (o 63-200 μm) was studied with Lumbriculus variegatus in three PCB contaminated sediments applying long AC-sediment contact time (3 years). AC amendment efficiently reduced PCB bioavailability as determined with both, L. variegatus bioaccumulation test and passive samplers. However, dose related secondary effects of AC on egestion rate and biomass were observed (applied doses 0.25% and 2.5% sediment dry weight). The sorption capacity and secondary effects remained similar when the experiments were repeated after three years of AC-sediment contact time. Further, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) samples reve…
Inhalation solutions — Which ones may be mixed? Physico-chemical compatibility of drug solutions in nebulizers — Update 2013
2014
AbstractMany patients suffering from chronic respiratory diseases rely on inhalation therapy with nebulizers. About 25% of patients who need to inhale several different drugs per day save time by mixing them for simultaneous inhalation. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the available data concerning physico-chemical compatibility of commonly mixed nebulizer solutions and suspensions. Information is based on our in vitro studies and a thorough literature search. Results indicate that many nebulizer solutions/suspensions are mixable without provoking incompatibilities. However, certain excipients contained in some of the tested drug products could be identified as a reason for i…
Metabolic fluxes and l-lysine synthesis by Corynebacterium glutamicum in relation to cellular total reducing activity
2001
Abstract The total reducing activity (TRA) of cells was used to estimate the physiological activity of Corynebacterium glutamicum under conditions of l -lysine synthesis. This was estimated as the rate of reduction of 2,3,5- triphenyltetrazolium chloride by intact cells. TRA of cells was linearly correlated with the intracellular concentrations of RNA and the bacterial growth rate. It was concluded that this activity reflected the rate of energy generation in cells. A decrease in TRA of growing cells was related to an increase in bacterial lysine synthesis activity. Alteration in metabolic pathway functioning and an increase in the intracellular concentrations of lysine precursors favoured …
