International audience; The mineralisation rate of atrazine measured in soil pre-treated with this herbicide, was significantly higher in the maize rhizosphere than in bulk soil. Maize rhizosphere was also shown to significantly increase microbial biomass C as compared with bulk soil. Ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis conducted on nucleic acids extracted directly from soil samples revealed that the structure of microbial communities observed in the rhizosphere was slightly different from that of bulk soil. We have studied, on the transcriptional, protein and functional level, the expression of alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) in the course of rat muscle development, denervation and renervation. At foetal day 13, alpha7 nAChR expression was observed in somites and developing muscles of the back, but not yet in migrating myoblasts. Two days later, concomitant with myoblast aggregation, the alpha7 isoform began to be expressed in isolated myoblasts, with the highest level of expression in the frontal zone of the migrating wave. Aluminium-based vaccine adjuvants have been in use since the 1920s. Aluminium hydroxide (alum) that is the chemical basis of Alhydrogel, a widely used adjuvant, is a colloid that binds proteins to the particular surface for efficient presentation to the immune system during the vaccination process. Using conventional TEM and cryo-TEM we have shown that Alhydrogel can be finely dispersed by ultrasonication of the aqueous suspension. Summary In many species, prey detect predators using chemical cues, which may be based on the predator’s previous diet. Furthermore, the predator’s previous hunting strategy and diet may affect the prey’s behavioural strategies to avoid predation. Juvenile Gryllid field crickets face predation by spiders, but the responses of juvenile crickets to spiders are unknown. We studied whether naive juvenile field crickets can detect a predatory spider, Hololena nedra, using chemotactile cues (silk, secretions and excreta).
