The inefficient aerobic energetics ofZymomonas mobilis: Identifying the bottleneck
2014
To investigate the mechanisms of Zymomonas mobilis uncoupled aerobic metabolism, growth properties of the wild-type strain Zm6 were compared to those of its respiratory mutants cytB and cydB, and the effects of the ATPase inhibitor DCCD on growth and intracellular ATP concentration were studied. The effects of the ATPase inhibitor DCCD on growth and intracellular ATP concentration strongly indicated that the apparent lack of oxidative phosphorylation in aerobically growing Z. mobilis culture might be caused by the ATP hydrolyzing activity of the H(+) -dependent ATPase in all analyzed strains. Aerobic growth yields of the mutants, and their capacity of oxidative ATP synthesis with ethanol we…
Audiovisual time-to-collision estimation for accelerating vehicles: The acoustic signature of electric vehicles impairs pedestrians' judgments
2022
To avoid collisions, pedestrians intending to cross a road need to accurately estimate the time-to-collision (TTC) of an approaching vehicle. For TTC estimation, auditory information can be considered particularly relevant when the approaching vehicle accelerates. The sound of vehicles with internal combustion engine (ICEVs) provides characteristic auditory information about the acceleration state (increasing speed and engine load). However, for electric vehicles (EVs), the acoustic signature during acceleration is less salient. Although the auditory detection of EVs has been studied extensively, there is no research on potential effects of the altered acoustic signature of EVs on TTC estim…
MDP-Based Resource Allocation Scheme Towards a Vehicular Fog Computing with Energy Constraints
2018
As mobile applications deliver increasingly complex functionalities, the demands for even more intensive computation would quickly transcend energy capability of mobile devices. On one hand and in an attempt to address such issues, fog computing paradigm is introduced to mitigate the limited energy and computation resources available within constrained mobile devices, by moving computation resources closer to their users at the edge of the access network. On another hand, most of electric vehicles (EVs), with increasing computation, storage and energy capabilities, spend more than 90% of time on parking lots. In this paper, we conceive the basic idea of using the underutilized computation r…
Proportional and Preemption-Enabled Traffic Offloading for IP Flow Mobility: Algorithms and Performance Evaluation
2018
IP Flow Mobility (IFOM) enables a user equipment to offload data traffic at the IP flow level. Although the procedure of IFOM-based flow offloading has been specified by 3GPP, how many IP flows should be offloaded and when offloading should be performed are not defined. Consequently, IP flows may be routed to a target access network which has a strong signal strength but with backhaul congestion or insufficient access capability. In this paper, we propose two algorithms, referred to as proportional offloading (PO), and proportional and preemption-enabled offloading (PPO), respectively, for IP flow offloading in hybrid cellular and wireless local area networks. The PO algorithm decides an op…
Proxy Mobile IPv6-Based Seamless Handover
2013
A prospective next generation wireless network is expected to integrate harmoniously into an IP-based core network. It is widely anticipated that IP-layer handover is a feasible solution to global mobility. However, the performance of IP-layer handover based on basic Mobile IP (MIP) cannot support real time services very well due to long handover delay. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Network-based Localized Mobility Management (NETLMM) working group developed a network-based localized mobility management protocol called Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) to reduce the handoff latency of MIPv6. Moreover, PMIPv6 provides the IP with the mobility to support User Equipments (UEs) without it…
Phone-Controlled Delivery of NGN Services into Residential Environments
2008
The horizontally layered architecture of the IMS/NGN standards family enables the delivery of services independent of access network and requesting device. In this article, the authors propose a further separation of service control and delivery, allowing the requesting device - in particular a user's mobile phone - to invite other devices (we will focus on DLNA appliances) into the service delivery, enhancing both user experience and service design flexibility. The proposed solution builds on exploiting proximity technologies (e.g. barcodes, NFC) for pairing the control device with a remote environment. Motivated by scenarios, the architecture concepts are explained and a prototype that wa…
Cultural and Landscapes Heritages: Mobility, Fruition and Accessibility for all
2021
At such a delicate historical moment, in which the pandemic health emergency has reduced the mobility of citizens, a new resilient culture is affirming its capacity to encourage and guarantee the use of cultural and landscape assets for all. This study analyzes some international and national experiences that have already been implemented, or are at an advanced planning stage, which point to a new way of understanding the accessibility of places by users with specific needs and permits their visitation which was previously impossible. Our discussion will deal with Agrigento in particular: the city itself, the Valley of the Temples, its historical center and all the naturalistic treasures of…
Investigation of the Electrophoretic Mobility of the Actinides Th, U, Np, Pu, and Am in Different Oxidation States.
2019
The electrophoretic mobilities (μe) of the actinides Th and U-Am in different oxidation states (prepared in 1 M HCl and 1 M HClO4) have been determined by capillary electrophoresis (CE)-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) using 1 M acetic acid as the background electrolyte, which has proven to provide an excellent setup for trace analysis at environmentally relevant concentrations (1 × 10-9 M). The values are independent of the respective acid solution. The μe of the Pu oxidation states +III to +VI have been measured. They agree with both the available literature data and the redox-stable analogues (Eu(III), Th(IV), Np(V), U(VI)) that have also been investigated. The trend …
