Mobile learning for instructional purpose in Nigeria : an exploratory analysis

2013

The main purpose of this research is to explore the use of M - learning for instructional purpose in Nigeria with a view to uncovering the degree to which it is in use in the institutions of learning. The issue was addressed from the view point of students and also from the theoretical point drawn from relevant extant literatures of other students and some learning theories, frameworks as well as relevant literatures were examined. This research is empirical in nature and as such employs a cross sectional approach which involved the use of survey design in collecting data from students of different departments from two highly rated and recognized universities in Nigeria. Finally, the result…

Smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA) in psychiatric patients and student controls: A real-world feasibility study

2020

Abstract Background Smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a promising methodology for mental health research. The objective of this study is to determine the feasibility of smartphone-based active and passive EMA in psychiatric outpatients and student controls. Methods Two smartphone applications —MEmind and eB2— were developed for behavioral active and passive monitoring. The applications were tested in psychiatric patients with a history of suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors (STB), psychiatric patients without a history of STB, and student controls. Main outcome was feasibility, measured as response to recruitment, retention, and EMA compliance. Secondary outcomes were…

SEMANTIC AND CONTEXTUAL APPROACH FOR THE RECOMMENDATION OF LEARNING MODULES IN MOBILITY

2012

International audience; Many researchers argue that mobile learning is just an adaptation of e-learning on mobile technology, but far from a simple extension of e-learning, m-learning raises original issues in technological and pedagogical terms. M-learning is usually based on the consideration of a context rich on information and interactions. The challenge of m-learning is therefore, not simply to transfer on mobile content designed primarily for e-learning. This concept implies that we must rethink the entire process of the learning experience in mobility to maximize its efficiency.

Recommender system for combination of learning elements in mobile environment

2012

5 pages; International audience; The paper presents an ongoing research about the development of a new recommender system dedicated to m-learning. This system is an extension of content based recommender system proposals. It's made of three levels architecture: 1/ a domain model describing the knowledge of teaching, 2/ a user model defining learner's profile and learning's context, 3/ an adaptation model containing rules and metaheuristics, which aims at combining learning modules. Our system takes into account the spatio-temporal context of the learners, the evolution of learner's profile and the dynamic adaptation of modules during the learning process in a mobile environment. The result …

Online user survey on current mobile augmented reality applications

2011

Augmented reality (AR) as an emerging technology in the mobile computing domain is becoming mature enough to engender publicly available applications for end users. Various commercial applications have recently been emerging in the mobile consumer domain at an increasing pace — Layar, Junaio, Google Goggles, and Wikitude are perhaps the most prominent ones. However, the research community lacks an understanding of how well such timely applications have been accepted, what kind of user experiences they have evoked, and what the users perceive as the weaknesses of the various applications overall. During the spring of 2011 we conducted an online survey to study the overall acceptance and user…

Educational Technology Goes Mobile

2018

Recent decades have revealed that the digital educational technology that is expected to revolutionise schooling for generations to come, is fraught with challenges. One major challenge is that educational systems vastly vary between cultures and countries. The differences start from the conceptualisation of education and school. It is, therefore, quite inaccurate to handle education as a universal concept. In this article the authors evade generalisation by discussing the use of mobile technology in the schools of one single, relatively homogenous nation: Finland. The backbone of their analysis is the core national curriculum of basic education. The appropriateness of mobile technology in …
