Smartphone Apps for the Treatment of Mental Disorders: Systematic Review
2020
Background Smartphone apps are an increasingly popular means for delivering psychological interventions to patients suffering from a mental disorder. In line with this popularity, there is a need to analyze and summarize the state of the art, both from a psychological and technical perspective. Objective This study aimed to systematically review the literature on the use of smartphones for psychological interventions. Our systematic review has the following objectives: (1) analyze the coverage of mental disorders in research articles per year; (2) study the types of assessment in research articles per mental disorder per year; (3) map the use of advanced technical features, such as sensors…
Process-and context-sensitive research on academic knowledge practices
2007
The Contextual Activity Sampling System (CASS) methodology and CASS-Query tools have been developed for the investigation of learning and working practices. The CASS-methods and tools provide contextualized data that allow the analyzing and modeling of within-person changes across time. This paper describes a pilot study with 3G mobiles used by eight engineering students. Students answered questionnaires concerning their ongoing study projects, academic emotions, and collaboration, with a mobile phone five times a day for a period of two weeks (70 queries per person). Variation in their emotions were examined by time-series analysis. Students were also interviewed before and after the CASS-…
User experiences of a mobile mental well-being intervention among pregnant women
2016
Postnatal depression affects 10 to 15 percent of women after childbirth. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is associated with better mental well-being and lower levels of depression. Digital ACT solutions enable providing potentially cost-effective access to interventions. This paper reports the user experiences of an ACT-based mobile mental well-being intervention among pregnant women. Twenty-nine mothers were recruited to a 6-month study. Usage rates were collected via usage logs and user experiences via questionnaires and interviews. The total usage time of the application was about 53 min per user. The application was perceived easy to use. The most common barriers of use were: co…
Towards Intelligent IoT Networks: Reinforcement Learning for Reliable Backscatter Communications
2019
Backscatter communication is becoming the focal point of research for low-powered Internet of things (IoT). However, the intelligence aspect of the backscattering devices is not well-defined. Since future IoT networks are going to be a formidable platform of intelligent sensing devices operating in a self-organizing manner, it is necessary to incorporate learning capabilities in backscatter devices. Motivated by this objective, this paper aims to employ reinforcement learning for improving the performance of backscatter networks. In particular, a multicluster backscatter communication model is developed for shortrange information sharing. This is followed by a power allocation algorithm usi…

Visual contact with catadioptric cameras
2015
Abstract Time to contact or time to collision (TTC) is utmost important information for animals as well as for mobile robots because it enables them to avoid obstacles; it is a convenient way to analyze the surrounding environment. The problem of TTC estimation is largely discussed in perspective images. Although a lot of works have shown the interest of omnidirectional camera for robotic applications such as localization, motion, monitoring, few works use omnidirectional images to compute the TTC. In this paper, we show that TTC can be also estimated on catadioptric images. We present two approaches for TTC estimation using directly or indirectly the optical flow based on de-rotation strat…
Mobile manipulator performance measurement towards manufacturing assembly tasks
2016
Mobile manipulator performance measurement research is relatively minimal as compared to that of robot arms. Measurement methods, such as optical tracking systems, are useful for measuring the performance of mobile manipulators, although at a much higher relative cost as compared to artifacts. The concept of using test artifacts demonstrates to potential manufacturers and users of mobile manipulator systems that relatively low cost performance measurement methods exist. This paper discusses the concept of reconfigurable mobile manipulator artifacts that were designed and built. An artifact was then used through experimentation to measure the performance of a mobile manipulator to demonstrat…
Robust Composite Nonlinear Feedback Path-Following Control for Independently Actuated Autonomous Vehicles With Differential Steering
2016
This paper investigates utilizing the front-wheel differential drive-assisted steering (DDAS) to achieve the path-following control for independently actuated (IA) electric autonomous ground vehicles (AGVs), in the case of the complete failure of the active front-wheel steering system. DDAS, which is generated by the differential torque between the left and right wheels of IA electric vehicles, can be utilized to actuate the front wheels as the sole steering power when the regular steering system fails, and thus avoids dangerous consequences for AGVs. As an inherent emergency measure and an active safety control method for the steering system of electric vehicles, DDAS strategy is a valuabl…
Learning of Cooperative Behaviour in Robot Populations
2016
This paper addresses convergence and equilibrium properties of game theoretic learning algorithms in robot populations using simple and broadly applicable reward/cost models of cooperation between robotic agents. New models for robot cooperation are proposed by combining regret based learning methods and network evolution models. Results of mean-field game theory are employed in order to show the asymptotic second moment boundedness in the variation of cooperative behaviour. The behaviour of the proposed models are tested in simulation results, which are based on sample networks and a single lane traffic flow case study.
A Geometrical Approach for Vision Based Attitude and Altitude Estimation for UAVs in Dark Environments
2012
International audience; This paper presents a single camera and laser system dedicated to the realtime estimation of attitude and altitude for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) under low illumination conditions to dark environments. The fisheye camera allows to cover a large field of view (FOV). The approach, close to structured light systems, uses the geometrical information obtained by the projection of a laser circle onto the ground plane and perceived by the camera. We propose some experiments based on simulated data and real sequences. The results show good agreement with the ground truth values from the commercial sensors in terms of its accuracy and correctness. The results also prove i…
