Quantifying sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of a new mathematical model for the evaluation of greenhouse gas emissions from membrane bioreactors

2015

Abstract A new mathematical model able to quantify greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in terms of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) for a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) is presented. The proposed mathematical model is of the Activated Sludge Model (ASM) family and takes into account simultaneously both biological and physical processes (e.g., membrane fouling). An analysis of the key factors and sources of uncertainty influencing GHG emissions is also presented. Specifically, the standardized regression coefficient, the Extended-FAST and a Monte Carlo based method are employed for assessing model factors which influence three performance indicators: effluent quality index, operational…

A combined CWT-DWT method using model-based design simulator for partial discharges online detection

2009

The suppression of noises is fundamental in onsite Partial Discharge (PD) measurements. For this purpose, the wavelet transform analysis method has been developed and it is a powerful tool for processing the transient and suddenly changing signals. As the wavelet transform possesses the properties of multi-scale analysis and time-frequency domain localization, it is also particularly suitable to process the suddenly changing signals of the partial discharge pulse (PD). In this paper, an improved Wavelet denoising method developed by a model-based design software is presented. Simulations are provided as well as some results obtained during laboratory experiment and on-line PD measurements. …

Estimating finite mixtures of semi-Markov chains: an application to the segmentation of temporal sensory data

2019

Summary In food science, it is of great interest to obtain information about the temporal perception of aliments to create new products, to modify existing products or more generally to understand the mechanisms of perception. Temporal dominance of sensations is a technique to measure temporal perception which consists in choosing sequentially attributes describing a food product over tasting. This work introduces new statistical models based on finite mixtures of semi-Markov chains to describe data collected with the temporal dominance of sensations protocol, allowing different temporal perceptions for a same product within a population. The identifiability of the parameters of such mixtur…

OPTIMAL OPERATION OF POWER-SPLIT HYBRID ELECTRIC POWERTRAIN: COMPARISON BETWEEN TWO PERFORMANCE INDICES

2022

Among all the current environmentally-friendly ground vehicles proposed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, power-split hybrid electric vehicles represent one of the most promising solutions. Their operation is based on the cooperation of the thermal engine and the electric unit enabled by mechanical transmissions consisting of planetary and ordinary gear sets. However, implementing proper energy management strategies to realise the best powertrain operations is crucial to maximise the environmental gain without compromising performance and drivability. For this purpose, an initial comprehensive analysis of the powertrain response is required. In this respect, this paper relies on a u…

Fuzzy Methods and Approximate Reasoning in Geographical Information Systems

2014

This issue has been dedicated to the usage of fuzzy logic in the context of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and were receveid the following papers whose contents are described below: - in the paper of A. Hofmann, S. Hoskova-Mayerova, and V. Talhofer, the authors use a GIS tool which is useful to study the influence of geographic and climatic factors on the terrain passability of armed forces and the Integrated Rescue System. - In the first paper of S. Sessa and F. Di Martino, the authors propose the usage of the well known Extended Gustafson-Kessel clustering method, encapsulated in a GIS tool, for detecting hotspots in spatial analysis. The data consist of geo-referenced patterns co…

Effectiveness of a creative physical education intervention on elementary school students’ leisure-time physical activity motivation and overall phys…

2018

This study investigated the effectiveness of a creative physical education (CPE) intervention on students’ perceptions of motivational climate in physical education (PE), leisure-time physical activity (PA) motivation, and overall PA. A sample of 382 fourth to sixth grade students ( Mage= 10.87[.93]) from two elementary schools were assigned to the CPE intervention ( n = 196; Mage= 10.84[.95]) and control ‘PE-as-usual’ ( n = 186; Mage= 10.90[.90]) groups. Students’ perceived task- and ego-supportive climate in PE, leisure-time PA motivation, and overall PA were measured before and after the one-year intervention. Analyses of covariance and path analyses were implemented to test the effectiv…

Effects of an Educational Hybrid Physical Education Program on Physical Fitness, Body Composition and Sedentary and Physical Activity Times in Adoles…

2021

Physical activity (PA), body composition and sedentary behavior may affect the health of children. Therefore, this study examined the effect of an educational hybrid physical education (PE) program on physical fitness (PF), body composition and sedentary and PA times in adolescents. A 9-month group-randomized controlled trial was conducted in 150 participants (age: 14.63 ± 1.38 years) allocated into the control group (CG,n= 37) and experimental group (EG,n= 113). Cardiorespiratory fitness, speed, strength, agility, flexibility and body mass index (BMI) were assessed through previously validated field tests. Sedentary time, PA at school and afterschool were evaluated with the Youth Activity …

An Integrated Theory for the Accumulation of Mentally Ill Offenders and the Effect of Realignment in California

2018

High mental illness prevalence in California state prisons has drawn much attention of scholars and policymakers in the past three decades. Various studies suggest that the mental illness prevalence in prison has increased from 0.14 to 0.3 from 1987 to 2014. The problem with a high concentration of mentally ill prisoners culminated when the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) was sued for the violation of inmates’ rights under the Eighth Amendment in the early 1990s. Consequently, CDCR’s health care was placed under Federal receivership to reform prison health care. Receivership is an uncommon remedy adopts by a federal court when other court orders have failed to…
