Thermophilic anaerobic digestion of pulp and paper mill primary sludge and co-digestion of primary and secondary sludge

2012

Anaerobic digestion of pulp and paper mill primary sludge and co-digestion of primary and secondary sludge were studied for the first time in semi-continuously fed continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTR) in thermophilic conditions. Additionally, in batch experiments, methane potentials of 210 and 230 m³CH₄/t volatile solids (VS)(added) were obtained for primary, and 50 and 100 m³CH₄/tVS(added) for secondary sludge at 35 °C and 55 °C, respectively. Anaerobic digestion of primary sludge was shown to be feasible with organic loading rates (OLR) of 1-1.4 kgVS/m³d and hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 16-32 d resulting in methane yields of 190-240 m³CH₄/tVS(fed). Also the highest tested OLR o…

Vertical distribution of AhR-activating compounds in sediments contaminated by modernized pulp and paper industry

2013

Increased ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity is a sensitive biomarker of exposure to the chemicals which activate the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and induce the cytochrome P450 system, such as many polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Pulp bleaching was one of the main sources of PCDDs and PCDFs until elemental chlorine free (ECF) and total chlorine free bleaching processes since 1990s have remarkably decreased but not completely eliminate discharges of these chemicals. In addition, historically contaminated sediments may act as a source of these persistent contaminants. In this study, the contam…

Hygro-elasto-plastic model for planar orthotropic material

2015

An in-plane elasto-plastic material model and a hygroexpansivity-shrinkage model for paper and board are introduced in this paper. The input parameters for both models are fiber orientation anisotropy and dry solids content. These two models, based on experimental results, could be used in an analytical approach to estimate, for example, plastic strain and shrinkage in simple one-dimensional cases, but for studies of the combined and more complicated effects of hygro-elasto-plastic behavior, a numerical finite element model was constructed. The finite element approach also offered possibilities for studying different structural variations of an orthotropic sheet as well as buckling behavior…

IDEA: interface dynamics and energetics algorithm.

2007

IDEA, interface dynamics and energetics algorithm, was implemented, in FORTRAN, under different operating systems to mimic dynamics and energetics of elementary events involved in interfacial processes. The code included a parallel elaboration scheme in which both the stochastic and the deterministic components, involved in the developed physical model, worked simultaneously. IDEA also embodied an optionally running VISUAL subroutine, showing the dynamic energy changes caused by the surface events, e.g., occurring at the gas-solid interface. Monte Carlo and ordinary differential equation system subroutines were employed in a synergistic way to drive the occurrence of the elementary events a…

Minimizing weighted earliness-tardiness on parallel machines using hybrid metaheuristics

2015

We consider the problem of scheduling a set of jobs on a set of identical parallel machines where the objective is to minimize the total weighted earliness and tardiness penalties with respect to a common due date. We propose a hybrid heuristic algorithm for constructing good solutions, combining priority rules for assigning jobs to machines and a local search with exact procedures for solving the one-machine subproblems. These solutions are then used in two metaheuristic frameworks, Path Relinking and Scatter Search, to obtain high quality solutions for the problem. The algorithms are tested on a large number of test instances to assess the efficiency of the proposed strategies. The result…

Design and Digital Fabrication of a Parametric Joint for Bamboo Sustainable Structures

2019

The study deepens the design of a joining system for bamboo spatial structure by proposing new and advanced solutions that guarantee maximum freedom of composition to the designer. The joint allows to determine and control parametrically the adaptability to any spatial grid configuration of culms with heterogeneous dimensions. Despite the bamboo being one of the main natural building materials in the field of sustainable architecture, currently, it is not used enough due to the lack of adequate connection systems. Bamboo is a rapidly growing renewable resource, naturally available, which is quite strong and lends itself to structural applications. The paper proposes an innovative approach t…

Prediction of bone mass gain by bone turnover parameters after parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism: neural network software statistical…

2006

Background Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is the most frequent endocrine hypersecretion disease, and parathyroidectomy is the only curative option, since pharmacologic therapy reduces hypercalcemia but does not impede parathyroid hormone hypersecretion. According to guidelines from the National Institutes of Health, parathyroidectomy is associated with bone mass increase in some asymptomatic patients, while in others bone mass is not changed after surgery. Therefore, we performed the present study in an attempt to elucidate whether a preoperative biochemical bone parameter can be predictive of a significant vertebral bone mass increase in patients with pHPT. Methods For each patient we …

ANOVA-MOP: ANOVA Decomposition for Multiobjective Optimization

2018

Real-world optimization problems may involve a number of computationally expensive functions with a large number of input variables. Metamodel-based optimization methods can reduce the computational costs of evaluating expensive functions, but this does not reduce the dimension of the search domain nor mitigate the curse of dimensionality effects. The dimension of the search domain can be reduced by functional anova decomposition involving Sobol' sensitivity indices. This approach allows one to rank decision variables according to their impact on the objective function values. On the basis of the sparsity of effects principle, typically only a small number of decision variables significantl…

A FAMILY OF THE SPIRAL SOLUTIONS OF THE NONLINEAR KLEIN‐GORDON EQUATION

1998

A family of the functions, intended for a construction the exact travelling wave solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations, is given. Exact solutions of the Klein‐Gordon equation with a special potential are obtained. The behavior of complex and hypercomplex solutions of the second order is presented. Numerical experiments with single mode gyrotron equations

2012

Gyrotrons are microwave sources whose operation is based on the stimulated cyclotron radiation of electrons oscillating in a static magnetic field. This process is described by the system of two complex differential equations: nonlinear first order ordinary differential equation with parameter (averaged equation of electron motion) and second order partial differential equation for high frequency field (RF field) in resonator (Schrödinger type equation for the wave amplitude). The stationary problem of the single mode gyrotron equation in short time interval with real initial conditions was numerically examined in our earlier work. In this paper we consider the stationary and nonstationary …
