The Inner Life of a Robot in Human-Robot Teaming
2020
Giving the robot a 'human' inner life, such as the capability to think about itself and to understand what the other team members are doing, would increase the efficiency of trustworthy interactions with the other members of the team. Our long-Term research goal is to provide the robot with a computational model of inner life helping the robot to reason about itself, its capabilities, its environment and its teammates. Robot inner speech is a part of the research goal. In this paper, we summarize the results obtained in this direction.
The four types of self-adaptive systems: A metamodel
2017
The basic ideas of self-adaptive systems are not a novelty in computer science. There are plenty of systems that are able of monitoring their operative context to take run-time decisions. However, more recently a new research discipline is trying to provide a common framework for collecting theory, methods, middlewares, algorithms and tools for engineering such software systems. The aim is to collect and classify existing approaches, coming from many different research areas. The objective of this work is providing a unified metamodel for describing the various categories of adaptation.
A Norm-Governed Holonic Multi-agent System Metamodel
2013
Modeling and designing systems that require a high level of coordination, control and automation is a very difficult task. The problem is the lack of design processes able to cover all the features these systems present. This paper presents an extension of the ASPECS metamodel for supporting organizational and normative principles and it allows to define models not only from an holonic agent viewpoint but also from a normative organization perspective. Moreover, our work emphasizes and makes it explicit the norms that regulate the structural, behavioral and finally adaptive aspect of an organizational system. The extended metamodel was experimented creating a Virtual Enterprise model for th…
Lettura stratigrafica delle murature e studio architettonico della Chiesa
2018
The contribution concerns the study of the construction phases of the church of Santa Marina in Muro Leccese (LE) realized through the stratigraphic reading of the masonry that has allowed, later, to be able to carry out the reconstructive study of the building through a digital model.
Museomics Provides Insights into Conservation and Education:The Instance of an African Lion Specimen from the Museum of Zoology “Pietro Doderlein”
2023
Innovative technological approaches are crucial to enhance naturalistic museum collections and develop information repositories of relevant interest to science, such as threatened animal taxa. In this context, museomics is an emerging discipline that provides a novel approach to the enhancement and exploitation of these collections. In the present study, the discovery of a neglected lion skeleton in the Museum of Zoology “Pietro Doderlein” of the University of Palermo (Italy) offered the opportunity to undertake a multidisciplinary project. The aims of the study consisted of the following: (i) adding useful information for museographic strategies, (ii) obtaining a new genetic data repositor…
Model
2020
The term model is polysemous. It refers to concrete objects, which are chosen or made through the techniques of arts, crafts, and engineering, as well as to abstract constructions, which are built by formal, theoretical, and statistical means for descriptive, explanatory, and normative aims. The term is also extended to the effective procedure by which scientific activity may be carried out according to rules, by which it can be considered valid in order to provide knowledge.
The Italian version of the Cognitive Style Indicator and its association with decision-making preferences
2018
By adopting a more flexible view, Cools and Van den Broeck (2007) developed the Cognitive Style Indicator (CoSI) which includes three cognitive dimensions: Creating (flexible, open-ended and inventive), Knowing (emphasizing facts, details, objectivity, and rationality), and Planning (guided by preferences for certainty and well-structured information). The first aim of this research was to validate the three factor structure of the CoSI within the Italian context, whereas the second was to verify whether cognitive styles, as measured by the CoSI, accounted for individual differences in decision-making processes. Two studies were conducted using two different samples (n = 549 and n = 397). C…
Social networks and social activities promote cognitive functioning in both concurrent and prospective time: evidence from the SHARE survey
2018
The study aimed to investigate the role of social activities, social networks as well as socioeconomic status (SES) in influencing some aspects of cognitive functioning (immediate and delayed verbal recall tests and semantic verbal fluency) in elderly people over time. This analysis was conducted on a sample of 31,954 healthy elderly people (58% female, mean age 65.54 ± 9.74) interviewed in both the fourth and sixth waves of the Survey on Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), in 2011 and 2015. A structural equation model with measurement component was used to assess the relationship between cognitive function, social life and SES over time. Multilevel ordinal logistic regression w…
A meshfree approach for brain activity source modeling
2015
Weak electrical currents in the brain flow as a consequence of acquisition, processing and transmission of information by neurons, giving raise to electric and magnetic fields, which are representable by means of quasi-stationary approximation of the Maxwell’s equations. Measurements of electric scalar potential differences at the scalp and magnetic fields near the head constitute the input data for, respectively, electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencepharography (MEG), which allow for reconstructing the cerebral electrical currents and thus investigating the neuronal activity in the human brain in a non-invasive way. This is a typical erectromagnetic inverse problem, since measuremen…
IL RANK LIGANDO QUALE TARGET TERAPEUTICO NEL TRATTAMENTO DELLE PAZIENTI ANZIANE CON OSTEOPOROSI
2013
Cortical and trabecular bone undergo a continuous and balanced remodeling process, which consists of a phase of resorption, mediated by osteoclasts, and a phase of neoformation mediated by osteoblasts. The activity of both, osteoblasts and osteoclasts, is regulated by the osteocytes, which are the most abundant cells in bone tissue. An imbalance of this process with an excessive resorption activity causes a loss of bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of the skeleton, with consequent reduction of bone strength and increased risk of fractures. The ligand for the “Receptor Activator of Nuclear Factor Kappa- B” (RANK-L), a protein expressed by osteoblasts, plays a fundamental role in…
