High-accuracy approximation of piecewise smooth functions using the Truncation and Encode approach

2017

Abstract In the present work, we analyze a technique designed by Geraci et al. in [1,11] named the Truncate and Encode (TE) strategy. It was presented as a non-intrusive method for steady and non-steady Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) in Uncertainty Quantification (UQ), and as a weakly intrusive method in the unsteady case. We analyze the TE algorithm applied to the approximation of functions, and in particular its performance for piecewise smooth functions. We carry out some numerical experiments, comparing the performance of the algorithm when using different linear and non-linear interpolation techniques and provide some recommendations that we find useful in order to achieve a hig…

Evaluating objective measures of impairment to trunk strength and control for cross-country sit skiing

2021

AbstractIn Paralympic cross-country sit skiing, athlete classification is performed by an expert panel, so it may be affected by subjectivity. An evidence-based classification is required, in which objective measures of impairment must be identified. The purposes of this study were: (i) to evaluate the reliability of 5 trunk strength measures and 18 trunk control measures developed for the purposes of classification; (ii) to rank the objective measures, according to the largest effects on performance. Using a new testing device, 14 elite sit-skiers performed two upright seated press tests and one simulated poling test to evaluate trunk strength. They were also subjected to unpredictable bal…

A dynamic subgrid-scale tensorial eddy viscosity model

1999

In the Navier-Stokes equations the removal of the turbulent fluctuating velocities with a frequency above a certain fixed threshold, employed in the Large Eddy Simulation (LES), causes the appearance of a turbulent stress tensor that requires a number of closure assumptions. In this paper insufficiencies are demonstrated for those closure models which are based on a scalar eddy viscosity coefficient. A new model, based on a tensorial eddy viscosity, is therefore proposed; it employs the Germano identity [1] and allows dynamical evaluation of the single required input coefficient. The tensorial expression for the eddy viscosity is deduced by removing the widely used scalar assumption of the …

A mathematical model of the self-averaging Pitot tube

2005

Abstract Flowmeters with self-averaging Pitot tubes are more and more often applied in practice. Their advantages are practically no additional flow losses, usability in the case of high temperature of fluids and simplicity of fitting. A mathematical model of a self-averaging Pitot tube including the influence of the probe shape, selected constructional features and flow conditions on the quantity of differential pressure gained has been given in this paper. The values and ranges of variations of the coefficients established for the model have been assessed on the basis of the numerically computed velocity and pressure fields around and inside the probe. Velocity and pressure fields were ca…

Airline Loyalty Determinants among Business Travelers: Empirical Evidence from Croatia

2017

AbstractAirline passenger loyalty has been the subject of several studies set within a general travel context. These studies have helped understanding the influence of variables like brand equity, airline service levels, customer commitment, but also price in tying a passenger to a particular airline. Despite the great economic importance of the business traveler market, no study has, however, so far, exclusively focused on this traveler segment and tried to investigate drivers of repurchase intentions and loyalty of this specific traveler type. This study aims to address this research gap. The findings reveal that business passenger loyalty is far stronger driven by emotional than rational…

Approche géographique des approvissionnements en plaquettes foréstières des chaufferies du secteur collectif/tertiaire : application au Pays Loue-Lis…

2011

In a context of strong increase of fuelwood demand in the collective sector, the supply issue becomes central to all stakeholders, raising many issues relating to land and forestry planning, local development, environment ... Meanwhile, questions emerge: how much energy can be mobilized sustainably? Does the spatial and structural configuration of forests influence the supply process? Do we seek to minimize transport distances? Can we observe spatial competition between the boilers ? To understand the current organization of supplies, we analyzed two sets of data traceability of wood chips. Then, we have developed a model of local supply basins, considering constraints of renewability of th…

Framework for Evaluating the Version Management Capabilities of a Class of UML Modeling Tools from the Viewpoint of Multi-site, Multi-partner Product…

2009

UML models are widely used in software product line engineering for activities such as modeling the software product line reference architecture, detailed design, and automation of software code generation and testing. But in high-tech companies, modeling activities are typically distributed across multiple sites and involve multiple partners in different countries, thus complicating model management. Today’s UML modeling tools support sophisticated version management for managing parallel and distributed modeling. However, the literature does not provide a comprehensive set of industrial-level criteria to evaluate the version management capabilities of UML tools. This article’s contributio…

Modeling and Query Language for Hospitals

2013

So far the traditional process modeling languages have found a limited use in the hospital settings. One of the reasons behind this delay has been the lack of clear definition of the sequence of activities that are carried out in the hospital. We propose a new modeling language (as a profile of UML Class diagrams) that captures all the useful features from various UML diagrams and can be used in modeling of the hospitals. Based on the modeling language, we have developed an easy-to-perceive graphical query language, which allows the physicians to retrieve directly from the various hospital databases information they need to better understand the flow of clinical processes.
