Interactions between cationic amylose derivatives and a pulp fiber model surface studied by molecular modelling
2007
This study was performed in order to obtain more information about the interactions between pulp fibers and acetylated cationic starch derivatives on a molecular scale. The adsorption of the polymers on the fiber surface was studied by simulating polymers on a fiber model surface at 300 K. Fractional atomic coordinates of regenerated cellulose II were used to generate a cellulose fiber surface model. Carboxylate groups were added on the cellulose surface to represent the anionic charge of pulp fiber which originates from hemicelluloses. Amylose chains cationized and acetylated atom by atom were chosen to represent four different starch derivatives. Atomic charges used in simulations were ca…

Competitive Urban Models
2014
The smart city model is here described according to the most recent studies on the topic. Ind…

Structure of self-rated health among the oldest old: Analyses in the total population and those living with dementia
2020
No previous study has explored the structure of self-rated health (SRH), a measure holding strong predictive value for future health events, in the oldest old or in individuals with dementia. The aim was to construct a structural equation model of SRH for oldest old in general and for oldest old with dementia, and to explore direct and indirect associations between health-related factors and SRH. Cross-sectional data from the Vitality 90+, a population-based study in the city of Tampere, Finland, was used. Data were gathered by a mailed questionnaire in 2014. Altogether 1299 nonagenarians, of which 408 had self-reported dementia or cognitive decline, were included. Structural equation model…
Can Money buy Love? : The Impact of the Cohesion Policy of the European Union on European Identity
2019
Master's thesis Innovative governance and public management ME523 - University of Agder 2019 This Master thesis explores the relationship between Cohesion policies of the EU and European identity. After first describing the history and context of Cohesion policies of the EU, the literature on European identity studies is reviewed. This discussion develops an economic utilitarian argument, that citizens in Europe develop their identification with the EU partly on rational considerations, and that the added quality of life provided by investments of the EU would positively influence their European identity. This effect is expected to be different throughout European regions. The hypothesesare …
Analysing Complex Life Sequence Data with Hidden Markov Modelling
2016
When analysing complex sequence data with multiple channels (dimensions) and long observation sequences, describing and visualizing the data can be a challenge. Hidden Markov models (HMMs) and their mixtures (MHMMs) offer a probabilistic model-based framework where the information in such data can be compressed into hidden states (general life stages) and clusters (general patterns in life courses). We studied two different approaches to analysing clustered life sequence data with sequence analysis (SA) and hidden Markov modelling. In the first approach we used SA clusters as fixed and estimated HMMs separately for each group. In the second approach we treated SA clusters as suggestive and …
An Early Stage Researcher's Primer on Systems Medicine Terminology
2021
Background: Systems Medicine is a novel approach to medicine, that is, an interdisciplinary field that considers the human body as a system, composed of multiple parts and of complex relationships at multiple levels, and further integrated into an environment. Exploring Systems Medicine implies understanding and combining concepts coming from diametral different fields, including medicine, biology, statistics, modeling and simulation, and data science. Such heterogeneity leads to semantic issues, which may slow down implementation and fruitful interaction between these highly diverse fields. Methods: In this review, we collect and explain more than100 terms related to Systems Medicine. Thes…
