Let's End HepC: modelling public health epidemiological policies applied to Hepatitis C in Spain

Background: The WHO has defined international targets toward the elimination of hepatitis C by 2030. Most countries cannot be on track to achieve this goal unless many challenges are surpassed. The Let's End HepC (LEHC) tool aims to contribute to the control of hepatitis C. The innovation of this tool combines the modelling of public health policies (PHP) focused on hepatitis C with epidemiological modelling of the disease, obtaining a unique result that allows to forecast the impact of policy outcomes. Chronic inflammation and airway remodelling are two key steps in asthma pathophysiology. The development of chronic airway inflammation depends upon the continuous recruitment of inflammatory cells from the bloodstream towards the bronchial mucosa and by their subsequent functional activation. Validation and update of the thoracic surgery scoring system (Thoracoscore) risk model.

Abstract OBJECTIVES The performance of prediction models tends to deteriorate over time. The purpose of this study was to update the Thoracoscore risk prediction model with recent data from the Epithor nationwide thoracic surgery database. METHODS From January 2016 to December 2017, a total of 56 279 patients were operated on for mediastinal, pleural, chest wall or lung disease. We used 3 recommended methods to update the Thoracoscore prediction model and then proceeded to develop a new risk model. Alternative mechanisms for tiotropium

Tiotropium is commonly used in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Although largely considered to be a long-acting bronchodilator, its demonstrated efficacy in reducing the frequency of exacerbations and preliminary evidence from early studies indicating that it might slow the rate of decline in lung function suggested mechanisms of action in addition to simple bronchodilation. This hypothesis was examined in the recently published UPLIFT study and, although spirometric and other clinical benefits of tiotropium treatment extended to four years, the rate of decline in lung function did not appear to be reduced by the addition of tiotropium in this study. Abstract In this paper, six new invariants associated with an anisotropic material made of one fiber family are calculated by presenting a systematic constructive and original approach. This approach is based on the development of mathematical techniques from the theory of invariants: • Definition of the material symmetry group. • Definition of the generalized Reynolds Operator. • Calculation of an integrity basis for invariant polynomials. • Comparison between the new (constructed) invariants and the classical ones.

Qualitative analysis of matrix splitting methods

Abstract Qualitative properties of matrix splitting methods for linear systems with tridiagonal and block tridiagonal Stieltjes-Toeplitz matrices are studied. Two particular splittings, the so-called symmetric tridiagonal splittings and the bidiagonal splittings, are considered, and conditions for qualitative properties like nonnegativity and shape preservation are shown for them. Special attention is paid to their close relation to the well-known splitting techniques like regular and weak regular splitting methods. VolcDeGas: A program for modelling hydrogen isotope fractionation during degassing of rhyolitic melts

Magma degassing mechanisms are key determinants of explosive and effusive eruption styles. Paired measurements of H2O content and hydrogen isotopic ratios (e.g., dD) in pyroclastic and effusive products can elucidate end-member degassing mechanisms (e.g. closed and open system) during eruption.  Here we present VolcDeGas, a MatLab program that models dD-H2O degassing trajectories of rhyolitic magma.  Operating within an intuitive GUI, VolcDeGas calculates degassing paths based on: initial dD (in ‰), the H2O content of the melt (wt.%), degassing step size, and temperature.  VolcDeGas also calculates hydrous speciation based on either empirical models or analytical data, and incorporates this…

Receiving water quality assessment: comparison between simplified and detailed integrated urban modelling approaches

Urban water quality management often requires use of numerical models allowing the evaluation of the cause–effect relationship between the input(s) (i.e. rainfall, pollutant concentrations on catchment surface and in sewer system) and the resulting water quality response. Molecular modelling and QSAR in the discovery of HIV-1 integrase inhibitors

The treatment regimens for the HIV-1 have mainly included reverse transcriptase or protease inhibitors but their long-term clinical utility is limited by severe side effects and viral drug resistance. A new attractive target for chemotherapeutic intervention can be the Integrase enzyme, that mediates the integration of HIV-1 DNA into a host chromosome, for which there is no known counterparts in the host cell. QSAR Analysis of Hypoglycemic Agents Using the Topological Indices

The molecular topology model and discriminant analysis have been applied to the prediction of some pharmacological properties of hypoglycemic drugs using multiple regression equations with their statistical parameters. Regression analysis showed that the molecular topology model predicts these properties. The corresponding stability (cross-validation) studies performed on the selected prediction models confirmed the goodness of the fits. The method used for hypoglycemic activity selection was a linear discriminant analysis (LDA).
