A Direct Comparison of Seprafilm, Adept, Intercoat, and Spraygel for Adhesion Prophylaxis

2010

Background Commercially available agents for adhesion prophylaxis are legion but there is a lack of direct comparisons between them. Here we compare four of the most commonly used adhesion barriers against a control group in a clinically relevant rat model. Material and Methods Standardized lesions were created in Wistar rats using electrocautery and suturing. Subsequently, the experimental lesions were treated with Seprafilm (n = 30), Adept (n = 30), Intercoat (n = 30), Spraygel (n = 30), or no barrier (n = 30). The resulting adhesions were examined 14 d postoperatively. Results The mean area covered by adhesion was 77% in the control group, 46% in animals treated with Seprafilm, 54% in an…

The influence of the C1-inhibitor BERINERT® and the protein-free haemodialysate ACTIHAEMYL20%® on the evolution of the depth of scald burns in a porc…

1997

Standardized deep partial-thickness burns were inflicted on domestic pigs by scalding 30 per cent of the skin surface for 25 s with 75 degrees C hot water. The animals (n = 18; weight 25-35 kg) were divided into three groups: I, control group (n = 6), Ringer's lactate only; II, haemodialysate group (n = 6), Ringer's lactate and a protein-free haemodialysate of calf-blood (ACTIHAEMYL20%; AH) and III, C1-inhibitor group (n = 6), Ringer's lactate and C1-inhibitor (C1-INH; BERINERT). Skin biopsies were taken at defined time points (4, 28, 52 and 76 h) and investigated histologically. Depth of burn was determined morphometrically after coloration with a modified MTT-staining on frozen sections o…

New applicator improves waterjet dissection quality

2010

Waterjet dissection is accomplished with Helix Hydro-Jet, but a new device with improved operative handling and potentially superior dissection qualities has been developed.Eighty-four fresh cadaveric pig brains were simultaneously cut with Helix Hydro-Jet and Erbejet 2. A commonly used applicator and a new applicator for the Helix Hydro-Jet were directly compared to the new Erbejet 2. Under standardised conditions, different pressure levels were applied to the brain surface without arachnoids. Technical features, cutting depth, tissue damage and differences of applicators were examined.Microscopic analysis of cutting depth revealed different dissection characteristics of both the devices. …

Magnetic resonance microscopy and correlative histopathology of the infarcted heart

2019

Altres ajuts:The present study was supported by the EU Joint Programming Initiative 'A Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life' (JPI HDHL INTIMIC-085), Generalitat Valenciana (GV/2018/116), INCLIVA and Universitat de Valencia (program VLC-BIOCLINIC 20-nanomIRM-2016A). Delayed enhancement cardiovascular magnetic resonance (MR) is the gold-standard for non-invasive assessment after myocardial infarction (MI). MR microscopy (MRM) provides a level of detail comparable to the macro objective of light microscopy. We used MRM and correlative histopathology to identify infarct and remote tissue in contrast agent-free multi-sequence MRM in swine MI hearts. One control group (n = 3 swine) and two experimenta…

Effects of BIS076 in a model of osteoarthritis induced by anterior cruciate ligament transection in ovariectomised rats

2015

Background Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most frequent articular disease and a leading cause of disability. There is a need for effective treatments able to slow the progression of disease. Some of the available treatments are dietary supplements providing natural components. Recent studies have shown that estrogen deficiency contributes to the pathophysiological events of OA progression. Methods We have used the anterior cruciate ligament transection model of OA in ovariectomised rats to study the effects of BIS076, a new formulation of a natural porcine cartilage extract associated with hydroxyapatite (as a source of calcium) and vitamin D3. Cartilage degradation, proteoglycan depletion and …

In vitro comparison of platinum-iridium and gold tip electrodes: lesion depth in 4 mm, 8 mm, and irrigated-tip radiofrequency ablation catheters

2009

Aims We compared a newly developed irrigated gold tip electrode ablation catheter and a gold tip 4 and 8 mm catheter with the corresponding platinum–iridium (Pt) tip catheters in an in vitro setting. Methods and results In a flow chamber simulating physiological flow conditions, radiofrequency catheter ablation was performed on tissue samples of porcine endomyocardium and liver. Lesion depth, energy and temperature delivery, and popping frequency were determined. Two hundred and fifty-three ablations were conducted. Four and eight millimetre, gold tip electrode catheters produced significantly deeper lesions compared with the Pt tip electrode (liver 4 mm: 4.67 ± 1.7 vs. 2.9 ± 1.0 mm, P < 0.…

OneShot-M: A New Device for Close Laparoscopy Pneumoperitoneum

2018

Introduction. The induction of pneumoperitoneum is the first and most critical phase of laparoscopy, due to the significant risk of serious vascular and visceral complications. The closed technique for the creation of pneumoperitoneum could lead to several surgical complications. The present study aimed to overcome the complications associated with the insertion of Veress needle, improving its use, and facilitating the rapid creation of pneumoperitoneum. Methods. Thirty large white female pigs were enrolled in our study. A common plunger was modified in order to allow the passage of a 15-cm long Veress needle. This method was applied to 26 laparoscopic procedures (26 pigs) of several speci…

Intracoronary Infusion of Thioflavin-S to Study Microvascular Obstruction in a Model of Myocardial Infarction

2015

Abstract Introduction and objectives Microvascular obstruction exerts deleterious effects after myocardial infarction. To elucidate the role of ischemia-reperfusion injury on the occurrence and dynamics of microvascular obstruction, we performed a preliminary methodological study to accurately define this process in an in vivo model. Methods Myocardial infarction was induced in swine by means of 90-min of occlusion of the mid left anterior descending coronary artery using angioplasty balloons . Intracoronary infusion of thioflavin-S was applied and compared with traditional intra-aortic or intraventricular instillation. The left anterior descending coronary artery perfused area and microvas…

Comparing Aachen Minipigs and Pietrain Piglets as Models of Experimental Pediatric Urology to Human Reference Data

2020

Introduction: Swine had special roles in the development of minimally invasive procedures to treat vesicoureteral reflux, and minipigs have been gaining ground in recent years in experimental pediatric urology as they combine small size with less vulnerable adult physiology, but their suitability as a model has never been assessed. We therefore compared a landrace piglet with a juvenile minipig to elucidate comparability. Methods: We evaluated five 3-week old Pietrain piglets and five 3-month old Aachen Minipigs as representatives of landrace and minipig models based on their expected bodyweight being similar to a n…
