Revisiting agricultural modernisation: Interconnected farming practices driving rural development at the farm level

2019

Abstract Rural development related to agriculture can roughly be divided into two trajectories: 1) agri-industrial development or modernisation, and 2) multifunctional or even post-productivist rural development. The role of these trajectories varies in different rural settings, with different emphases on agricultural production and its conduct. At the farm level, the trajectories evolve from existing farming practices and their connections, which enable or disable different kinds of development. However, the connections through which changes in agricultural production practices contribute to different rural development trajectories deserve further scrutiny. This is addressed with the help …

Valoisamman tulevaisuuden puolesta : YK:n yleiskokouksen täysistunnoissa sekä toisessa komiteassa käydyt keskustelut kestävästä kehityksestä vuonna 2…

2010

A GOVERNMENT WITHOUT PRIDE. ANTONIO ROSMINI’S “CATHOLIC” MODERNITY

2020

Antonio Rosmini is considered one of the leading Catholic philosophers in modern age. His reflections on politics, law and society can be very useful in facing the challenges coming from the so-called populist movements. M. Nicoletti suggests, in his last work, to consider Rosmini’s conception of human person not only as theLeitmotivof his political philosophy but, broadly speaking, as the real chance to build a society in line with the great tradition of Modernity and Christian values.

Impression(s)

2019

The articles presented in this cluster discuss literary and visual impressions from the premise that literary impressionism and printmaking share the trope of impression as “impress” and as “imprints” in a technical and epistemological sense. Most works on Impressionism and literary impressionism dwell on the genealogy and mutual influence of fiction and painting, but few authors tackle the importance of printmaking. The five essays presented here all examine impressions as theme, trope and technique in 19th and 20th-century texts and images. These essays discuss intermedial practices, the mutual influence of artistic practice and textual production, as well as the dual meaning of impressio…

Reconnecting Aestheticism and Modernism

2016

Charting the period that extends from the 1860s to the 1940s, this volume offers fresh perspectives on Aestheticism and Modernism. By acknowledging that both movements had a passion for the ‘new’, it goes beyond the alleged divide between Modernism and its predecessors. Rather than reading the modernist credo, ‘Make it New!’, as a desire to break away from the past, the authors of this book suggest reading it as a continuation and a reappropriation of the spirit of the ‘New’ that characterizes Aestheticism. Basing their arguments on recent reassessments of Aestheticism and Modernism and their articulation, contributors take up the challenge of interrogating the connections, continuities, an…

Philosophical problems in the theory of non-place: Marc Augé

2015

In recent decades, the theory of non-places has gained a wide recognition and esteem in the global journals. It is originally oriented to discuss the negative effects of postmodernism or hyper-mobilities in the real world. It was coined by French ethnologist Marc Auge. Although illustrative and pungent, Auge's argument should be seriously revisited. To what an extent a place can be called a non-place?, what are the specific condition for the non-places production? Auge explains his model respecting to three indicators, identity, conflict and tradition. Not only, our own fieldwork validated the belief that airports are spaces of conflict and identity, but we found serious ethical limitations…
