Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman keskeisimpänä tavoitteena on selvittää mikrohistoriallisen analyysin ja mahdollisimman monipuolisen lähdeaineiston avulla, millaisia vaikutuksia Riihimäen–Pietarin rautatien rakentamisella oli työmaan ympärillä asuneen paikallisväestön elämään ja kuinka rautatie ja radanrakentajat näkyivät ympäristön asukkaiden arjessa. Tutkimuskohteena on pieni hämäläinen maalaispitäjä Nastola, jossa rakentamisen vuosina 1868–1870 törmäsivät radan edistämä modernisaatio, paikallisten perinteiset arvot ja elämäntapa sekä kauempaa tulleet ulkopuoliset, vieraat ”toiset”. Suomen miesten ja naisten jääkiekkomaajoukkueet ovat pelanneet lajin arvoturnauksissa vuosikymmenten ajan. Jalkapallossa miehet selviytyivät ensimmäisen kerran arvokisojen lopputurnaukseen vasta syksyllä 2019. Naiset onnistuivat tässä kahdesti jo 2000-luvun alussa, mutta se ei muuta kokonaiskuvaa; Suomi on jääkiekkomaa.
 Artikkelissa lähestymme Suomen jalkapallo-jääkiekko -asetelmaa historiallisen muutoksen näkökulmasta. Peruskysymyksemme on, miksi Suomesta tuli jääkiekkomaa, eikä jalkapallomaa. Progeny of “Sir Thaddeus” (1897), a less known essay by literary critic Cezary Jellenta [Napoleon Hirszband], presents an interesting attempt to discern and estimate novels of the 19th century Polish realists as originated from the great Mickiewicz’s poem. The article titled Artists and Philistines, published in 1897 in the “Kurier Niedzielny”, a moderated weekly with a compromising orientation (publisher: Maria Chełmońska, editors: Ludomir Grendyszyński), is an example of a voice about artist-society relationship typical of the end of the century.
