Abstract. The coupling of Earth system model components, which work on different grids, into an Earth System Model (ESM) provokes the necessity to transfer data from one grid to another. Additionally, each of these model components might require data import onto its specific grid. Usually, one of two approaches is used: Either all input data is preprocessed to the employed grid, or the imported data is interpolated on-line, i.e. during model integration to the required grid. For the former, each change in the model resolution requires the re-preprocessing of all data. The latter option implies that in each model integration computing time is required for the grid mapping. If all components …

Opposing Forces of Social Attraction and Social Avoidance Drive Network Modularity

2020

SUMMARY: How interactions between individuals contribute to the emergence of complex societies is a major question in biology. Nonetheless, little remains known about how simple rules of social attraction (e.g. to information) and social avoidance (e.g. of disease) interact to shape sociality. We developed an individual-based model where individuals choose with whom to interact depending on the status of group mates (informed and/or infected). Statistical models indicate that the emergence of social structure depends on the cost/benefit trade-offs underlying the system. Critically, pressures that optimize social relationships – i.e. minimize risky connections while favouring those that maxi…

Modular approach towards multi-functional surfaces with adjustable and dual-responsive wettability using a hybrid polymer toolbox

2009

Poly(methylsilsesquioxane)-based hybrid polymers carrying orthogonally reactive moieties demonstrate an effective modular approach to creating multi-reactive surface coatings. By a sequential surface-analogous reaction different functions could be immobilized in a defined ratio, resulting in dual- or triple-functionalized surfaces.

Modular organization in the reductive evolution of protein-protein interaction networks

2006

Analysis of the reduction in genome size of Buchnera aphidicola from its common ancestor E. coli shows that the organization of networks into modules is the property that seems to be directly related with the evolutionary process of genome reduction.

Scavenger – A Framework for Efficient Evaluation of Dynamic and Modular Algorithms

2015

Machine Learning methods and algorithms are often highly modular in the sense that they rely on a large number of subalgorithms that are in principle interchangeable. For example, it is often possible to use various kinds of pre- and post-processing and various base classifiers or regressors as components of the same modular approach. We propose a framework, called Scavenger, that allows evaluating whole families of conceptually similar algorithms efficiently. The algorithms are represented as compositions, couplings and products of atomic subalgorithms. This allows partial results to be cached and shared between different instances of a modular algorithm, so that potentially expensive part…

k-Truss Decomposition for Modular Centrality

2018

There is currently much interest in identifying influential spreaders in complex networks due to many applications concerned, such as controlling the outbreak of epidemics and conducting advertisements for commercial products, and so on. A plethora of centrality measures have been proposed over the years based on the topological properties of networks. However, most of these classical centrality measures fail to select the most influential nodes in networks with a modular structure despite that it is an omnipresent property in real-world networks. Few authors have introduced centrality measures tailored to networks with community structure. In a recent work, we have shown that, in this case…

Gl-learning

2016

In this paper, we present a new open-source software library, Gl-learning, for grammatical inference. The rise of new application scenarios in recent years has required optimized methods to address knowledge extraction from huge amounts of data and to model highly complex systems. Our library implements the main state-of-the-art algorithms in the grammatical inference field (RPNI, EDSM, L*), redesigned through the OpenMP library for a parallel execution that drastically decreases execution times. To our best knowledge, it is also the first comprehensive library including a noise tolerance learning algorithm, such as Blue*, that significantly broadens the range of the potential application s…

A Multi-Component Reaction towards the Development of Highly Modular Hydrogelators

2018

Herein we report a multi‐component reaction approach for the development of a new class of hydrogelators based on the OxoTriphenylHexanOate (OTHO) backbone. A focused library of OTHOs has been synthesized and their hydrogelation features evaluated. The two most potent hydrogelators were studied by rheology revealing different stiffness, appearances and thixotropic behavior of the gels. The new gelators showcase the versatility of the OTHO backbone as a platform for the design of functionalized hydrogels with tunable gel properties. peerReviewed

An open-source instrumentation package for intensive soil hydraulic characterization

2020

International audience; We present a new open-source and modular instrumentation package composed of up to ten automatic in- filtrometers connected to data acquisition systems for automatic recording of multiple infiltration experiments. The infiltrometers are equipped with differential transducers to monitor water level changes in a Mariotte re- servoir, and, in turn, to quantify water infiltration rates. The data acquisition systems consist of low-cost components and operate on the open-source microcontroller platform Arduino. The devices were tested both in the laboratory and on different urban and agricultural soils in France and India. More specifically, we tested three procedures to t…

Experimental Study of Vibrations in Face Milling Cutting

2014

Abstract The present paper consists in a comparison of vibrations measured during face milling cutting with two constructive variants of milling cutters (one with classic insert clamping and other with a quick insert adjustment mechanism). The goal of the study is to determine if the new clamping mechanism of the inserts has a similar behaviour with the classic one and can withstand milling conditions without introducing additional vibrations in the system
