Polyamine Linear Chains Bearing Two Identical Terminal Aromatic Units. Evidence for a Photo Induced Bending Movement
2001
Abstract Several chemosensors bearing a fluorescent unit at both ends of a linear polyamine chain were synthesised. The protonation as well as the association constants with Cu2+ and Zn2+ were determined by potentiometry in 0.15 mol dm−3 NaCl at 298.1 K. In the case of 1,16-bis(1-naphthylmethyl)-1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaazadecane hexahydrochloride (L1), formation of an excimer emission in aqueous acidic solutions was observed. The system was characterized by steady state fluorescence emission and by time resolved fluorescence. In the ground state the molecule is expected to adopt a more or less linear conformation, while in the excited state a bending movement of the chain must occur in order to …
A quantum mechanics-molecular mechanics study of dissociative electron transfer : The methylchloride radical anion in aqueous solution
2002
The dissociative electron transfer reaction CH3Cl+e−→CH3•+Cl− in aqueous solution is studied by using a QM/MM method. In this work the quantum subsystem (a methylchloride molecule plus an electron) is described using density functional theory while the solvent (300 water molecules) is described using the TIP3P classical potential. By means of molecular dynamics simulations and the thermodynamic integration technique we obtained the potential of mean force (PMF) for the carbon–chlorine bond dissociation of the neutral and radical anion species. Combining these two free energy curves we found a quadratic dependence of the activation free energy on the reaction free energy in agreement with Ma…
Synthesis, solid state and solution studies of cobalt(II) complexes with 2-hydroxyiminopropanoic acid
2013
Abstract This paper describes the synthesis of the Zn(II) complex with H2L = 2-hydroxyiminopropanoic acid. The final structure incorporated two linear dimeric anions with two Zn2+ atoms, which are linked by a carbonate anion into a tetranuclear unit. In each dinuclear unit, the two Zn(II) ions are coordinated by three molecules of the doubly deprotonated ligand in two different coordination modes. This result is confirmed both by X-ray crystallography and by ESI-MS investigations of the crystals dissolved in water. Equilibrium studies of the zinc(II) complexes formed by H2L in aqueous solution based on independent pH-metric titrations and zinc ion-selective electrode (ISE) titrations indica…
Enthalpic and entropic contributions of water molecules to the functional T → R transition of human hemoglobin in solution
1992
Generalized solvent-mediated forces contribute to free energy at the functional T → R transition of human hemoglobin A (HbA). Their contribution is here sorted out quantitatively in both its enthalpic and entropic parts, along with the average number of water molecules involved. The latter (about 75 waters in average) must be considered together with HbA as one statistically defined functional unit for oxygen transport. Their configurations are expected to undergo frequent structural rearrangements. Lifetimes of statistically relevant configurations do not need to (although, of course, they may) exceed by more than a factor 5 the normal H-bond lifetimes of the pure solvent. Compared to the …
Spectral studies of zinc octacarboxyphthalocyanine aggregation
2009
The association of zinc octacarboxyphthalocyanine, was studied using UV–vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy; the effects of dye concentration, pH and solvents on spectra were discussed. Calculations showed that the dye dimerized in aqueous solutions ranging from 5.0 × 10−7 to 5.0 × 10−5 mol/dm3, at 25 °C. The dimerization constant of 106 dm3/mol and the spectral Q band shift of 1185 cm−1 imparted by dimerization indicated strong π–π interactions between phthalocyanine molecules. Red S1 fluorescence of the dye monomer was observed in various solutions which was quenched owing to molecular association and other factors. The strong influence of pH on both aggregation and fluo…
Coordination properties of the ACE inhibitor captopril towards Me2Sn(IV)2+ in aqueous solution, and biological aspects of some dialkyltin(IV) derivat…
2003
Abstract The coordination of Me 2 Sn(IV) 2+ (M) to captopril { N -[( S )-3-mercapto-2-methylpropionyl]- l -proline, H 2 (cap), H 2 L} in aqueous solution was studied by means of potentiometric titration, electrospray mass spectrometry, 1 H-NMR spectroscopy and Mossbauer spectroscopy in the pH range 2–11 ( I =0.1 mol dm −3 NaClO 4 , 298 K). The results obtained with these methods proved that only monomeric complexes are formed in solution. In the acidic pH range, species with a metal-to-ligand ratio of 1:1 exist. The neutral complex ML, similarly to the complex Me 2 Sn(cap) crystallized in the same pH range, adopts a tbp structure with eq S − and ax COO − , while, instead of the coordina…
Hydrogen-bond tuning of ferromagnetic interactions: synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of polynuclear copper(ii) complexes incorporating p-…
2006
The reaction of copper(II) hydroxide with 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) (1 : 1) in alkaline aqueous solution (pH 14) at room temperature affords the alternating carbonate/hydroxo-bridged copper(II) polymeric chain compound {[Cu3(bipy)3(mu-OH)2(mu-CO3)2].11H2O}n, 1, as determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure of 1 is built up from two similar centro-symmetric dinuclear [(bipy)Cu(mu-OH)]2 cores which link together via bridging carbonate groups to mononuclear [(bipy)Cu] fragments to form the chain. Interdigitation of adjacent chains through pi-pi interactions, which involve each bipy ligand, forms sheets that are separated by the water molecules of crystallisation. Variable-tempe…
Study of the interaction between [Cu(bipy)]2+ and oxalate in dimethyl sulfoxide. Crystal structure of [Cu2(bipy)2(H2O)2ox]SO4·[Cu(bipy)ox]
1991
Abstract A study of complex formation between [Cu(bipy)]2+ and ox2− (bipy and ox2− being 2,2′-bipyridyl and the dianion of oxalic acid), has been carried out by potentiometry in dimethyl sulfoxide solution. The constants of the equilibria and are log β110 = 11.165(1) and log β210 = 13.185(5) at 25 °C and 0.1 mol dm−3 tetra-n- butylammonium perchlorate. The high values of these constants are consistent with the symmetrical bidentate and bis-bidentate modes of oxalate in [Cu(bipy)ox] and [Cu2(bipy)2ox]2+ units, respectively, as shown by X-ray diffraction studies. Well-formed single crystals of [Cu2(bipy)2(H2O)2ox]SO4· [Cu(bipy)ox] were grown from aqueous solutions and characterized by X-ray d…
Complexes of tetra(parasulphonatephenyl)porphyrinato ferrate(III), FeTPPs, with 1,10 phenanthroline and 2,2′ bipyridine ligands
1985
Abstract Iron(III) porphyrin, FeTPPS, gives high-spin 1:1 monomeric complexes with the ligands 1,10 phenanthroline, 2,9 dimethylphenanthroline and 2,2 bipyridine in aqueous solution. Absorption spectrum of the complexes is very different to the one of the monomer metalloporphyrin, but nearly identical to the visible spectrum of the μ-oxo dimer Fe2(TPPS)2O. A spectrophotometric study of the formation equilibria yields the following values of the stability constants: Me2phen 4.3 × 104, phen 1.1 × 104, bipy 2.0 × 102 (25 °C, 0.1 M NaNO3). Analysis of the experimental data strongly suggest that the ligands are hydrogen bonded to one coordinated water molecule (TPPS)FeOH2 → (LL). Although the …

2005
The coordination polymers {[Ni(CN)4]2[(Ni(NH3)2)2(bpym)]·2H2O}n1 and {[Cu2(CN)2(bpym)]·NH3}n2 have been prepared from the reactions of M(NO3)2·nH2O [Cu(II), n = 3 and M = Ni(II), n = 6] with NaCN and bpym (2,2′-bipyrimidine) in concentrated aqueous ammonia, respectively. The structure of 1 is made of bipyrimidine bridged centrosymmetric dinuclear [Ni(NH3)2(μ-bpym)Ni(NH3)2] fragments connected by four [Ni(CN)4]2− anions giving rise to a 2D framework. Layers, which adopt a stair-like conformation, are stacked with an ABAB… repeat pattern. Water molecules are located in the interlayer space and are involved in hydrogen bond interactions with the non-bridging cyanide groups of the [Ni(CN)4]2− a…
