The magnetic properties of ferrocene based macromolecules

Abstract Magnetic susceptibility data for conjugatively linked biferrocenes and a methylene bridged ferrocene polymer are presented. In 9,10-di((2-ferrocenyl)vinyl)anthracene a rigid divinylanthracene bridge is connecting two ferrocene units, and the oxidation of both iron centers leads to an antiferromagnetic coupling. In contrast, ferromagnetic coupling between iron centers is indicated for 2,2'-cis,trans-di((2-ferrocenyl)vinyl)biphenyl, where a twist around the phenyl-phenyl bond in the divinylbiphenyl bridging molecule is likely to occur.

The internal rotational barrier of biphenyl studied with multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2)

A detailedab initio study of the molecular structure and rotational barriers of biphenyl has been performed. First, non-dynamical correlation effects involving the π system are taken into account at the CASSCF level. These wave functions are subsequently employed as reference functions in a multiconfigurational second-order perturbation treatment (CASPT2). The performance single-reference approaches is in addition analysed. The molecular geometries of biphenyl in twisted, coplanar, and perpendicular conformations have been optimized at the CASSCF level. Polyazapodands Derived from Biphenyl. Study of their Behaviour as Conformationally Regulated Fluorescent Sensors

Eight new polyazapodands containing a 4,4′-substituted biphenyl moiety have been synthesised. Four (7, 8, 9 and 11) are functionalised on positions 4 and 4′ with a nitro group and four (1, 2, 3 and 10) with a dimethylamino substituent. Comparison of the emission behaviour of 1, 2, 3 with that of the reference compounds 10 and tetramthylbenzidine, clearly suggests that a modification in the dihedral angle between the biphenyl rings is an important factor in determining the fluorescent response of the molecule. This thesis is about the control and characterisation of the alignment and orientation of molecules by ultra short laser pulses on a theoretical and experimental approach. Alignment corresponds to a symmetric angular distribution of the molecular axis peaked along the laser field axis, whereas orientation provides an asymmetric distribution favouring one spatial direction. Orientation by sudden two-colour (2+1) pulses is studied extensively for the non resonant case and conditions required for achieving significant orientation are explored. High-density-lipoproteins-cholesterol (HDL-C) is invertedly related to the incidence of cardiovascular events. Recent studies suggest that HDL-C directly improves endothelial function. Nicotinic acid (niacin) effectively raises serum HDL-C. We therefore hypothesized that treatment with niacin improves endothelial dysfunction in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Differential roles of cAMP and cGMP in megakaryocyte maturation and platelet biogenesis

The cyclic nucleotides cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) regulate the activity of protein kinase A (PKA) and protein kinase G (PKG), respectively. This process helps maintain circulating platelets in a resting state. Here we studied the role of cAMP and cGMP in the regulation of megakaryocyte (MK) differentiation and platelet formation. Abstract MHC-unrestricted cytotoxic activity of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) from 4–6 healthy donors was investigated before and after transfusion with allogeneic leukocytes or platelets. Natural killer and lectin-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (LDCC) of PBL was tested against K562 and Raji target cells in a 4-h and 16-h 51 Cr-release assay, respectively. After allotransfusion with leukocytes, we found increased cytotoxic activity of each donor's PBL against all the three targets on day 3 or 7. Multicellular interactions of platelets, leukocytes, and the blood vessel wall support coagulation and precipitate arterial and venous thrombosis. High levels of angiotensin II cause arterial hypertension by a complex vascular inflammatory pathway that requires leukocyte recruitment and reactive oxygen species production and is followed by vascular dysfunction.
