Power spectrum of turbulent convection in the solar photosphere

The solar photosphere provides us with a laboratory for understanding turbulence in a layer where the fundamental processes of transport vary rapidly and a strongly superadiabatic region lies very closely to a subadiabatic layer. Our tools for probing the turbulence are high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations such as have recently been obtained with the two balloon-borne SUNRISE missions, and numerical simulations. Our aim is to study photospheric turbulence with the help of Fourier power spectra that we compute from observations and simulations. Analysis of variability in divergence and turn-over induced by three idealized convective systems with a 3D cloud resolving model

The sensitivity of upper tropospheric and lower stratospheric convective outflows and related divergence fields is analysed using an ensemble of cloud resolving model (CM1) simulations in LES-mode including various physically manipulated simulations for three different convective systems initialized with an idealized trigger. Classification of cat ganglion retinal cells and implications for shape-function relationship

This article presents a quantitative approach to ganglion cell classification by considering combinations of several geometrical features including fractal dimension, symmetry, diameter, eccentricity and convex hull. Special attention is given to moment and symmetry-based features. Several combinations of such features are fed to two clustering methods (Ward's hierarchical scheme and K-Means) and the respectively obtained classifications are compared. The results indicate the superiority of some features, also suggesting possible biological implications.

Interaction strength and shape difference for the h9/2 and h11/2 configurations in163Tm

The strongly shape driving πh9/2[541]l/2− configuration with α=+1/2 exhibits some anomalous, and so far unexplained, features concerning the crossing frequency, ħωc, the aligned angular momentum, ix, and interaction strength, at the alignment of the first pair of i13/2 quasineutrons in several odd-Z rare earth-nuclei. The h9/2[541]1/2− and h11/2[523]7/2− bands have been studied in the stably deformed rare-earth nucleus163Tm to investigate these features. A difference in band crossing frequency of ∼ 80 keV between the two bands is found. Rotational bands built on these two configurations have been found to cross in the spin range I=25/2–29/2 ħ. Flexural behavior of corroded RC beams

Synopsis: A handily model to evaluate the bending resistance and the ductility of corroded beams critical in flexure and shear is proposed and debated. Effects of diffused and pitting corrosion on steel bars, compressive concrete strength reduction and concrete bond strength reduction due to rust creation are modelled. Practical method derived on limit state theory was here used to calculate the flexural and shear strength and the available ductility. The effectiveness of the model was also corroborated against numerous results collected in the literature pertaining to bending and shear resistance.

Theoretical absorption spectrum of the Ar–CO van der Waals complex

The three-dimensional intermolecular electric dipole moment surface of Ar–CO is calculated at the coupled cluster singles and doubles level of theory with the aug-cc-pVTZ basis set extended with a 3s3p2d1f1g set of midbond functions. Using the rovibrational energies and wave functions of our recent study [J. Chem. Phys. 117, 6562 (2002)], temperature-dependent spectral intensities are evaluated and compared to available experimental data. Based on the theoretical spectrum, alternative assignments of the experimentally observed lines in the fundamental band of CO around 2160 and 2166 cm−1 are suggested. Thomas.Bondo@uv.es

Effective-Lagrangian formulation of generalized vector dominance. II

As in a preceding paper we generalize the Lagrangian of Lee and Zumino to include several mutually interacting vector mesons. The treatment is more general in the sense that all possible interactions between the vector mesons, compatible with the field-current proportionality relations, are now discussed. It is moreover demonstrated that also the fields corresponding to the physical vector mesons satisfy a field-current proportionality relation of exactly the same form. Comparison of the different schemes and their implications for the magnetic moments of the vector mesons are discussed.

Nuclear Spins of the IsomersHg191m−185mDetermined by On-Line Quantum-Beat Spectroscopy

The nuclear spins of the very neutron-deficient $^{191m\ensuremath{-}185m}\mathrm{Hg}$ isomers were measured on line at the mass separator ISO LIDE at CERN using pulsed-laser excitation and observation of the time-resolved quantum beats from selected hyperfine-structure states. The spins of these isomers are with $I=\frac{13}{2}$ equal to those of the long-lived isomers $^{199m\ensuremath{-}193m}\mathrm{Hg}$ already known. The persistence of this spin value for eight isomers is explained by the model of rotation-aligned coupling.

Linear response theory in asymmetric nuclear matter for Skyrme functionals including spin-orbit and tensor terms II: Charge Exchange

International audience; We present the formalism of linear response theory both at zero and finite temperature in the case of asymmetric nuclear matter excited by an isospin flip probe. The particle-hole interaction is derived from a general Skyrme functional that includes spin-orbit and tensor terms. Response functions are obtained by solving a closed algebraic system of equations. Spin strength functions are analyzed for typical values of density, momentum transfer, asymmetry, and temperature.
