Comparing RADseq and microsatellites for estimating genetic diversity and relatedness : Implications for brown trout conservation
2019
The conservation and management of endangered species requires information on their genetic diversity, relatedness and population structure. The main genetic markers applied for these questions are microsatellites and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), the latter of which remain the more resource demanding approach in most cases. Here, we compare the performance of two approaches, SNPs obtained by restriction-site-associated DNA sequencing (RADseq) and 16 DNA microsatellite loci, for estimating genetic diversity, relatedness and genetic differentiation of three, small, geographically close wild brown trout (Salmo trutta) populations and a regionally used hatchery strain. The genetic di…
Tienpientareiden merkitys vaihtoehtoisina elinympäristöinä perinneympäristöjen luteille
2015
Uhanalais…
Reflections on the Schoolscape : Teachers on Linguistic Diversity in Hungary and Finland
2018
is article1 focuses on ideologies that pertain to linguistic diversity and multilingualism from a linguistic landscape approach to education. It is to be emphasised that ideologies pertaining to multilingualism and monolingualism have strong systematic resemblances. So-called monolingualist labeling, management, and control over linguistic varieties is something similar to multilingualism-related practices described in Nikula (et al. 2012). For example, dialects are o en evaluated positively, but dialect users are generally criticized because they deviate from the so-called standard (cf., Milroy 2001; Kontra 2006). In order to investigate a wide range of diversity-related ideologies, two co…

Imprints of latitude, host taxon, and decay stage on fungus-associated arthropod communities
2022
Interactions among fungi and insects involve hundreds of thousands of species. While insect communities on plants have formed some of the classic model systems in ecology, fungus-based communities and the forces structuring them remain poorly studied by comparison. We characterize the arthropod communities associated with fruiting bodies of eight mycorrhizal basidiomycete fungus species from three different orders along a 1200-km latitudinal gradient in northern Europe. We hypothesized that, matching the pattern seen for most insect taxa on plants, we would observe a general decrease in fungal-associated species with latitude. Against this backdrop, we expected local communities to be struc…
Nature diversity and well-being in old age
2017
Background The research aim was to study the associations of nature diversity with quality of life (QoL) and depressive symptoms among older people, and whether physical activity explains the associations. Methods Community-dwelling people aged 75–90 years (n = 848) living in Central Finland were interviewed in their homes. QoL was assessed with a short version of the World Health Organization Quality-of-Life Assessment (range 0–130, higher score indicates better QoL) and depressive symptoms with the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (range 0–30, higher scores indicate more depressive symptoms). Self-reported physical activity was assessed by intensity and duration using a s…
Teaching on Hybrid Courses : Insights from Commercial Online ICT-Training
2018
Information and communication technology (ICT) has evolved rapidly during the last decades. These technological advancements have enabled new ways of teaching and learning, such as online courses, where students attend training using their own computer equipment. Previous studies have shown that the student satisfaction and learning outcomes do not differ between the classroom and online students. However, our previous study conducted on hybrid courses, where part of the students was present in a classroom and part are participating online, revealed some issues related to teaching methods and technical difficulties. In this study, we researched how teachers of a commercial ICT-training orga…
Understanding meaning-making of diversity : education students' experience of a 10 day intensive programme
2017
The aim of this study is to question meaning-making and how individuals’ narrate around it based on a 10 day intensive programmes. Inside out - Outside in: Building bridges with diversity in teacher education project was the focused of research, based on the collaboration of eight universities invested in teacher education that took place in the University of Jyväskylä. Thirty-two participants’ were involved sharing their experiences and stories based on two sets of data; 1) pre-questionnaire and, 2) a final reflective essay in response to the programme. A thematic analysis was used for the first data set, and a dialogic analysis was used for the second set of data. Four major themes emerge…
