Why Do Players Misuse Emotes in Hearthstone? : Negotiating the Use of Communicative Affordances in an Online Multiplayer Game

2018

This paper examines player-to-player interaction in Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft (Blizzard Entertainment, 2004). The game designers have attempted to limit what they see as negative interaction by forcibly limiting player-to-player social interaction. Based on an analysis of forum discussions, this empirical study illustrates how players utilize Hearthstone's restricted communication affordances for negative and insulting purposes, and how players negotiate their shared symbolic reality concerning this type of interaction, labeled "Bad Manner(s)" or "BM". The continuous debate over an issue which ultimately cannot be solved shows that players care deeply about the game and the surroundin…

The N-dimensional N-person chesslike game strategy analysis model

2016

In this research a mathematical, symmetric n-player game model, based on chess is designed. Symmetry in this context refers to players' positions with respect to each other. While the order of move naturally violates the symmetry, this problem may also be solved. The motivation for building this kind of game model stems from the difficulty of finding mathematical solutions for multi-player games in general. The number of varying factors is so huge, that finding optimal strategies is mathematically almost impossible. The best way to attempt this is to use simulation. Once the model has been built, it can be applied in many ways by using computational algorithms based on the created model. Ch…

Gender and Toxic Meritocracy in Competitive Overwatch: Case “Ellie”

2022

AbstractThis chapter examines toxic meritocracy in relation to gender in competitive Overwatch, asking how gender affects a player’s opportunities for engagement in that scene. It analyzes online news stories and community discussions concerning “Ellie” – a fabricated competitive woman gamer created as a “social experiment” by a man player. The confluences between gender and toxic meritocracy become visible in the assumption there must be an experienced man gamer behind the battletag, the gender-based harassment targeted at Ellie, and the reflections on the importance of setting an example as the first team taking a woman player for Contenders. The analysis shows that despite a strong belie…

Player Reception of Change and Stability in Character Mechanics

2022

AbstractChange is a constant element of online games, and Overwatch as well as its playable characters have been through multiple changes since the launch of the game in 2016. In this chapter, we examine the relationships players have with the playable characters of Overwatch and specifically the role that character mechanics have in these relationships. Changes to game characters are a topic of avid discussion in Overwatch communities and evoke articulations of the meaning of game characters for the players.
