Long-term optical variability of high-mass X-ray binaries. II. Spectroscopy

We present the results of our monitoring program to study the long-term variability of the Halpha line in high-mass X-ray binaries. We have carried out the most complete optical spectroscopic study of the global properties of high-mass X-ray binaries so far with the analysis of more than 1100 spectra of 20 sources. Our aim is to characterise the optical variability timescales and study the interaction between the neutron star and the accreting material. Lures for red palm weevil trapping systems: aggregation pheromone and synthetic kairomone

Effects of microplastics on the functional traits of aquatic benthic organisms: A global-scale meta-analysis

Microplastics are widespread in the aquatic environment and thus available for many organisms at different trophic levels. Many scientific papers focus their attention on the study of the effects of microplastics on different species at individual level. Here we performed a global scale meta-analysis focusing our work on the study of the effect of microplastics on the functional traits of aquatic benthic organisms. Overall, microplastics showed a moderate negative effect on the examined functional traits of benthic organisms. Bibliometric analysis of European publications between 2001 and 2016 on concentrations of selected elements in mushrooms.

This article presents a bibliometric study of 200 European publications released between 2001 and 2016, about the contamination of mushrooms by selected elements. The analysis includes figures on the type of analyte, its concentration, the species of fungi, and its country of origin. In the literature review, 492 species of mushrooms (wild-growing and cultured) found in 26 European countries and their concentration of 74 associated elements were analysed. The papers, which dealt mainly with the heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn) concentrations of mushrooms, primarily came from Turkey, Poland, Spain, and the Czech Republic. Non-enzymatic water-soluble antioxidants from different teas (black, green, peppermint), coffee, natural extract of rosemary and fruit juices (apple, grape, grapefruit, kiwifruit) were quantized by measuring their chemiluminescence in order to establish their power to protect the living beings from the free radicals. Among the samples high values of antioxidative capacity presents green tea (655 mmol AU) (AU=ascorbic units) and kiwi fruit juice (31 mmol AU). The maximum measuring times are less than 3 minutes. Trinitrotoluene (TNT), a commonly used explosive for military and industrial applications, can cause serious environmental pollution. 28-day laboratory pot experiment was carried out applying bioaugmentation using laboratory selected bacterial strains as inoculum, biostimulation with molasses and cabbage leaf extract, and phytoremediation using rye and blue fenugreek to study the effect of these treatments on TNT removal and changes in soil microbial community responsible for contaminant degradation.
