Hypervisor-based Protection of Code
2019
The code of a compiled program is susceptible to reverse-engineering attacks on the algorithms and the business logic that are contained within the code. The main existing countermeasure to reverse-engineering is obfuscation. Generally, obfuscation methods suffer from two main deficiencies: 1) the obfuscated code is less efficient than the original and 2) with sufficient effort, the original code may be reconstructed. We propose a method that is based on cryptography and virtualization. The most valuable functions are encrypted and remain inaccessible even during their execution, thus preventing their reconstruction. A specially crafted hypervisor is responsible for decryption, execution, a…
SAGECELL: Software-Defined Space-Air-Ground Integrated Moving Cells
2018
Ultra-dense networks (UDNs) provide an effective solution to accommodate the explosively growing data traffic of multimedia services and real-time applications. However, the densification of large numbers of static small cells faces many fundamental challenges, including deployment cost, energy consumption and control, and so on. This motivates us to develop software-defined space-air-ground integrated moving cells (SAGECELL), a programmable, scalable, and flexible framework to integrate space, air, and ground resources for matching dynamic traffic demands with network capacity supplies. First, we provide a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art literature. Then the conceptual architectur…
Comparison of WSN and IoT approaches for a real-time monitoring system of meal distribution trolleys: A case study
2018
Abstract International regulations determine that food in hospitals and elderly homes must be served at given temperature ranges. However, the real-time surveillance of the meal distribution trolleys along all the institutions facilities, guaranteeing conformity to rules from the instant when all the meals are put in the distribution trolley until they are delivered to the patients, is still a challenge. In this paper, we present a comparison of two approaches based on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for implementing a Real-Time Monitoring System of Meal Distribution Trolleys in a hospital. The performance evaluation results show that the IoT impleme…
Pain fingerprinting using multimodal sensing: pilot study
2021
Abstract Pain is a complex phenomenon, the experience of which varies widely across individuals. At worst, chronic pain can lead to anxiety and depression. Cost-effective strategies are urgently needed to improve the treatment of pain, and thus we propose a novel home-based pain measurement system for the longitudinal monitoring of pain experience and variation in different patients with chronic low back pain. The autonomous nervous system and audio-visual features are analyzed from heart rate signals, voice characteristics and facial expressions using a unique measurement protocol. Self-reporting is utilized for the follow-up of changes in pain intensity, induced by well-designed physical …
Continuous Monitoring of Parasitic Elements in Boost Converter Circuit
2021
The given paper explains the necessity of condition monitoring for DC/DC boost converter circuit. Further, an analytical model of circuit parasitic estimation is presented based on measured quantities in the circuit. The implementation of continuous estimation of circuit parasitic elements is analytically explained and verified by simulations and experimental results. Obtained results are acceptable for condition monitoring.
The effect of automated taxa identification errors on biological indices
2017
In benthic macroinvertebrate biomonitoring systems, the target is to determine the status of ecosystems based on several biological indices. To increase cost-efficiency, computer-based taxa identification for image data has recently been developed. Taxa identification errors can, however, have strong effects on the indices and thus on the determination of the ecological status. In order to shift the biomonitoring process towards automated expert systems, we need a clear understanding on the bias caused by automation. In this paper, we examine eleven classification methods in the case of macroinvertebrate image data and show how their classification errors propagate into different biological…
A new low cost power line communication solution for smart grid monitoring and management
2018
Modern smart grids require the improvement of measurement and communication infrastructures of distribution networks, at both medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) levels. Distributed sensing and measurement systems are needed to provide all necessary data for grid monitoring, control and management, as well as for the implementation of a number of smart functionalities, such as remote control of distributed generators (DGs), real time analysis of power flows, automatic meter reading (AMR), demand side management (DSM), grid automation and so on [1]-[6]. Acquired network data include typical electrical network quantities and status variables (such as powers, voltages, currents, switches …

Permission from IEEE must be obtained for all other uses, in any current or future media, including reprinting/republishing this material for advertising or promotional purposes, creating new collective works, for resale or redistribution to servers or lists, or reuse of any copyrighted component of this work in other works. This paper concerns the Doppler power spectrum of three-dimensional non-stationary indoor fixed-to- fixed channels with moving people. In this paper, we model each moving person as a moving scatterer with time-variant (TV) speed, TV vertical angles of motion, and TV horizontal angles o…
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-Based Non Destructive Diagnostics
2018
The paper proposes a cloud platform for analyzing the radiometric infrared videos uploaded by drones which patrol large photovoltaic plants. Thanks to artificial vision algorithms, it does not require any human support to select and associate the framed PV modules to the corresponding ones in the topology of the photovoltaic plant. The algorithm implements an innovative diagnostic protocol, which evaluates the thermal state of the photovoltaic module, whichever the environmental conditions are. The data automatically computed and collected in a multimedia database provide the O&M technicians with significant information to monitor the ageing of each module of the photovoltaic plant. The pro…
Wireless ECG and cardiac monitoring systems: State of the art, available commercial devices and useful electronic components
2021
Abstract Wireless ElectroCardioGram (ECG) systems are employed in manifold application fields: tele-monitoring, sport applications, support to ageing people at home, fetal ECG, wearable devices and ambulatory monitoring. The presence of cables often hinders user’s free movements, alongside clinicians’ routine operations. Therefore, wireless ECG systems are desirable. This paper aims at reviewing the solutions described in the literature, besides commercially available devices and electronic components useful to setup laboratory prototypes. Several systems have been developed, different in terms of the adopted technology; when approaching the development of a wireless ECG system, some import…
