Human cerebral microcirculation and oxygen saturation during propofol-induced reduction of bispectral index †

2011

† This study investigates the effects of propofol-induced changes in bispectral index (BIS) on cerebral microcirculation and oxygenation during craniotomies. † In 2 mm cerebral depth, an increase in propofol dosage resulted in increased oxygen saturation (srvO2 )w ithout reduction of capillary venous blood flow (rvCBF). † Difference in oxygen content (avDO2) and approximated cerebralmetabolicrateofoxygen (aCMRO2) decreased with an increase in propofol dosage in 2 mm cerebral depth. † Alterations in BIS showed no effect on rvCBF, srvO2 ,a nd haemoglobin amount (rvHb) or on avDO2 or aCMRO2 in 8 mm cerebral depth. † These findings suggest that the CBF/CMRO2 ratio is altered by propofol in a re…

Degree of Postictal Suppression Depends on Seizure Induction Time in Magnetic Seizure Therapy and Electroconvulsive Therapy.

2017

OBJECTIVES Anesthesia is required for both magnetic seizure therapy (MST) and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), although it has anticonvulsant properties. In this case, bispectral index (BIS) monitoring, a specific electroencephalogram-derived monitoring, can be used to find the optimal seizure induction time during anesthesia to elicit adequate seizures. A measurement of seizure adequacy in electroencephalogram is the postictal suppression. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of seizure induction time on the degree of postictal suppression by comparing BIS versus no-BIS monitoring in MST and ECT. METHODS Twenty patients with treatment-resistant depression were randoml…

Microalbuminuria fractional clearance and early renal permselectivity changes in essential hypertension.

1992

In order to verify if, in essential hypertension (EH), the microalbuminuria (AER) increase could be due to hemodynamic modifications or to glomerular structural changes, in 15 essential hypertensives (EHs) with 24-hour AER16 micrograms/min and in 15 EHs with 24-hour AERor = 16 micrograms/min, the day- and nighttime behavior of creatinine clearance (Ccr), as well as AER clearance (AER-C) and fractional clearance (AER-FC), and behavior of blood pressure (BP) was evaluated. Patients with 24-hour AER16 micrograms/min showed significantly higher values of 24-hour and daytime Ccr than the other group of EHs, while during the night period, there were no significant differences between the two grou…

Krāsu kalibrēšanas algoritma izstrāde

2022

Plants as biomonitors for volcanic emissions

2014

Biomonitoring techniques have been widely used in environmental studies to monitor anthropogenic pollutant. Recently such techniques have been applied also to ascertain the impact of contaminants naturally released by volcanic activity. In the present study a biomonitoring surveys has been performed in many different active volcanic systems: Mt. Etna and Vulcano (Italy), Nisyros (Greece), Nyiragongo (DRC), Masaya (Nicaragua), Gorely (Kamchatka, Russia). We sampled leaves of different species Betulla aethnensis, Pinus nigra, Populus tremula, Senecio aethnensis and Rumex aethnensis on Etna, Cistus creticus and salvifolius on Vulcano and Nisyros, Senecio ssp. on Nyiragongo, a Fern on Masaya an…

BIOMONITORIG ACTIVITIES OF “COMPRENSORIO DI PACE DEL MELA”.ANALYSES OF AIR QUALITY DATA

2007

The “Assessorato Territorio e Ambiente” of the Regional Sicilian Government and the “Ingegneria e Tecnologie Agro Forestali” (ITAF) Department, Palermo University, have been involved in a study (D.R.S. N° 473) concerning the occurrence of environmental pollution by heavy metals in the "Comprensorio territoriale di Pace del Mela". The involved local administrations (“comuni”) in the area of interest are: Condrò, Gualtieri Sicaminò, Milazzo, Pace del Mela, S.Filippo del Mela, Santa Lucia del Mela, San Pier Niceto. Naturalistic aspects and landscape relevance of the “Pace del Mela” area is supported by the existence of three Natural Reserves, twelve Sites of Community Interest (S.I.C.) and a Z…

Extensive Assessment of Blood Glucose Monitoring During Postprandial Period and Its Impact on Closed-Loop Performance.

2017

[EN] Background: Closed-loop (CL) systems aims to outperform usual treatments in blood glucose control and continuous glucose monitors (CGM) are a key component in such systems. Meals represents one of the main disturbances in blood glucose control, and postprandial period (PP) is a challenging situation for both CL system and CGM accuracy. Methods: We performed an extensive analysis of sensor¿s performance by numerical accuracy and precision during PP, as well as its influence in blood glucose control under CL therapy. Results: During PP the mean absolute relative difference (MARD) for both sensors presented lower accuracy in the hypoglycemic range (19.4 ± 12.8%) than in other ranges (12.2…

Bispectral index changes in carotid surgery.

2010

Intraoperative monitoring of cerebral ischemia with shunting during carotid endarterectomy (CEA) remains controversial. Our objective was to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of BIS changes during carotid clamping in relation to shunted patients in awake CEA.Eighty CEAs under cervical block were included. There were two patient groups: with clinical signs of cerebral ischemia (shunted patients) and without signs of cerebral ischemia (nonshunted patients). Data were based on bispectral index (BIS) values and neurological monitoring at different surgery time points, with special attention paid during carotid clamping. BIS values were compared between shunted and nonshunted patients. Se…
