Vapauden kapea polku : István Bibón julkinen moralismi
2017
The task of this study is to listen to the moral voice of István Bibó, a Hungarian democrat. Listening to past ‘voices’ is an approach of intellectual history introduced by Stefan Collini, who has eavesdropped on the conversations of ‘public moralists’ in the British intellectual life from the period c. 1850–1950. What has been translated of and written on Bibó’s thought in Hungary – irrespective of a couple of notable exceptions not much is found abroad – is very ‘Hungarian’ in tone in particular, note the very productive workshop (Bibó Szellemi Műhely), whereas I have tried independently to develop Collini’s approach. Instead of uncovering the meanings of ideas and concepts in the context…
Maternal responsibility and changing relationality at the beginning of motherhood
2009
Eija Sevón pohti väitöstutkimuksessaan, millaista on tulla äidiksi nyky-yhteiskunnassa, jossa äiteihin ja äitiyteen kohdistetaan monia odotuksia ja vaatimuksia.- Naisten ja miesten perherooleihin liitetyt sukupuolittuneet odotukset, merkitykset ja kulttuuriset kertomukset asettavat helposti äideiksi tulevat naiset mahdottomien haasteiden eteen ja estävät sukupuoliroolien murtamisen. Nämä asenteet ovat juurtuneet suomalaiseen vanhemmuuskulttuuriin lujasti, Sevón havaitsi.Äidiksi tuloa voidaan pitää naisen elämän yhtenä käännekohtana. Syntyvä vauva mullistaa niin naisen arkea, tärkeimpiä ihmissuhteita kuin omaa identiteettiä monin eri tavoin.Äitiyteen liittyy monia ristiriitoja. Vastuu lapses…

Free Will and Moral Judgements
2020
Man radās aizdomas, ka atšķirīgos efektus var radīt tas, kādā kontekstā determinisms tiek apstrādāts cilvēku prātos, jeb tā integrācijas aspekts. Pētījuma empīriskajā daļā tika nolemts veikt salīdzinājumu starp 3 grupām, kurām katrai tika izveidots unikāls determinisma praimings – fatālistiskais (jeb tāds, kurš noliedz izvēles iespējas), zinātniskais (realitāti ir det…

Freedom, Civility and Activeness. On the government of leisure self-formation of Finnish multicultural youth
2012
This article explores the leisure time and civic activities of ‘multicultural youth’ in Finland. The theoretic-conceptual framework is the Foucauldian governmentality approach and Foucault's four step model of the ethical self-formation of the moral subject. This toolkit exposes how the subjectivation of the multicultural youth takes place in their leisure time activities and civic action, and connects and disconnects with the desires and expectations of administration and youth workers. The leisure time subjectivation of the youth implements on the interface of their own ‘self-driven’ activities and interests and more or less programmatic governance of official youth work with its integrat…
A Multidimensional Ethics Scale for Indian Managers' Moral Decision Making
2010
This paper analyses the role of traditional moral theories in managers’ moral decision making using the multidimensional ethics scale (MES) developed and refined by Reidenbach and Robin (1988, 1990). This study extends their work by examining the applicability of the scale to subjects from India, other than the country in which the scale was developed. The research question is: what kind of ethical dimensions do Indian managers reveal when they are making moral decisions. Factor analysis is done to investigate the role of five moral philosophies (justice, deontology, relativism, utilitarianism, and egoism) in their ethical decision-making. The results show that the scale holds for the diffe…
‘Because I point to myself as the hog’ : interactional achievement of moral decisions in a classroom
2016
Abstract Drawing on the conversation analytic and sociocultural perspectives, this study investigates children's situated moral negotiations in classroom peer interaction in the absence of a teacher. The conversation analytic methodology is used to operationalise some of the key elements of the sociocultural perspective on moral development. In this way, this study enables readers to observe and study the semiotic, conversational and interactional mediations of moral functioning in real life, with the example of children's moral practices. The empirical analysis is based on video-recorded sequences in which primary school children work with the rules of a counting rhyme which is banned by t…
Clinical performance of a highly portable, scanning calcaneal ultrasonometer.
2001
The aim of this study was to establish a normative database, assess precision, and evaluate the ability to identify women with low bone mass and to discriminate women with fracture from those without for a highly portable, scanning calcaneal ultrasonometer: the QUS-2. Fourteen hundred and one Caucasian women were recruited for the study. Among them were 794 healthy women 25–84 years of age evenly distributed per 10-year period to establish a normative database. Of these, 171 aged 25–34 years were defined as the young normal group for the purpose of T-score determination. Precision was assessed within 1 day (short-term) and over a 16-week period (long-term) in 79 women aged 25–84 years. Five…
