Monitoring bone growth using quantitative ultrasound in comparison with DXA and pQCT.

2008

Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) is a safe, inexpensive, and nonradiation method for bone density assessment. QUS correlates with, and predicts fragility fractures comparable to, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-derived bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. However, its validity in monitoring bone growth in children is not well understood. Two hundred and fifty-eight 10-13 yr pubertal girls and 9 37-43 yr adults without diseases or history of medications known to affect bone metabolism were included in the 2-yr prospective study. Calcaneal broadband ultrasound attenuation (cBUA) was assessed using QUS-2 (Quidel, Santa Clara, CA), speed of sound of tibial shaft (tSOS) using …

Muscle strength characteristics and central bone mineral density in women with recent onset rheumatoid arthritis compared with healthy controls.

1999

Muscle strength and bone mineral density (BMD) at the lumbar spine (BMDspine) and femoral neck (BMDfem) were determined in 20 healthy women and in 20 women with recent onset rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The mean duration of articular symptoms of the patients was eleven months and none of them had used glucocorticoids or disease modifying antirheumatic drugs. BMDs were measured by dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Knee extension, trunk extension, and flexion as well as grip strength were measured with David 200 and Digitest dynamometers. BMDspine (1.17 g/cm2 and 1.20 g/cm2) and BMDfem (0.98 g/cm2 and 0.96 g/cm2) between the women with early RA and healthy women did not differ. However, knee ext…

Both Resistance and Agility Training Increase Cortical Bone Density in 75- to 85-Year-Old Women With Low Bone Mass

2004

A randomized, controlled, single-blinded 25-wk prospective study was conducted to compare the effects of group-based resistance and agility training on bone, as measured by both dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT), in older women with low bone mass. Ninety-eight community-dwelling women aged 75-85 yr were randomized to one of three experimental groups: resistance training (n = 32), agility training (n = 34), or stretching (sham exercise) (n = 32). Total hip, femoral neck, and trochanteric bone mineral density (BMD) were measured by DXA. Peripheral QCT measurements were performed at the tibia and radius. The pQCT outcome measures at t…

Stellenwert der MR-Tomographie bei traumatischen Patellaluxationen

1995

PURPOSE To describe the MR imaging findings in patients with lateral patellar dislocation. MATERIAL AND METHODS The MRIs of 31 patients with patellar dislocation were evaluated retrospectively. Arthroscopic surgery was performed in 23 cases. RESULTS Hemarthrosis was found in 30/31, contusions of the lateral femoral condyle in 30/31 and of the medial patellar facet in 26/31 cases. Injury of the medial patellar retinaculum was seen in 28/31 cases. Osteochondral fractures were found in 18 patients; compared to arthroscopy there were one false-positive and 5 false-negative findings concerning loose cartilage bodies. In 7 cases, patellar dislocation was not suspected before MR imaging. CONCLUSIO…

Effect of preoperative flexion contracture in the knee joint on the accuracy of digital templating before knee replacement surgery

2016

Abstract Introduction Flexion contracture in the knee joint before knee replacement surgery has been implicated as one of the factors that could affect the accuracy of digital templating. Aim The aim of the study was to detect the accuracy of digital templating in predicting the size of knee implants and to detect the effect of preoperative flexion contracture in the knee joint on the accuracy of digital templating. Material and methods The flexion contracture of the knee joint was measured in every patient prior to knee replacement surgery and digital templating of the knee joint was made in mediolateral (ML), anteroposterior (AP) and AP long leg views. The sizes of prosthetic components p…

The "critical zones" of entrapment of the nerves of the lower limb.

1991

The author has studied, in a group of 40 dissections on cadavers of individuals of different ages, the main “critical zones” of entrapment of some terminal branches of the lumbo-sacral plexus, which include canals (fibrous, osteo-fibrous, fibro-muscular), intervals (intermuscular, fibro-muscular, musculo-ligamentous), rings (fibrous or fibro-muscular) and foramina. They provide the topographical anatomical basis for possible compressive phenomena of the nerves of the lower limb.

MRI of transient osteoporosis of the hip.

1991

Among the available imaging techniques such as conventional radiography, radionuclide bone scan, and computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has made significant contributions to the diagnosis of acute hip joint disease in adults by enabling early differentiation between such conditions as idiopathic avascular femoral head necrosis, septic coxitis, degenerative disease, and tumors. In this study we investigated the use of MRI for evaluation of patients with transient osteoporosis (TO). MRI with T1- and T2-weighted sequences in coronal, transverse, and sagittal sections was performed in 12 patients with retrospectively confirmed TO, both at the onset of the disease and lat…

Estrogen metabolism modulates bone density in men.

2007

Estrogen is a critical hormone for bone homeostasis in men, but no information is available on the role of estrogen metabolism among men. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of estrogen hydroxylation on male bone mineral density (BMD). Participants consisted of 61 healthy Caucasian males (mean age 66.6 +/- 1.0 years). Urinary estrogen metabolites were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, serum estradiol by ultrasensitive radioimmunoassay, sex hormone binding globulin by radioimmunoassay, and BMD of the lumbar spine and the proximal femur by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Active estrogen metabolites, 16alpha-hydroxyestrone (16alphaOHE(1)) and estriol (E(3)), positiv…

In Silico Analysis of Bone Tension During Fixation of the Medial Malleolus Fracture After Ankle Joint Endoprosthesis

2020

Total ankle arthroplasty (TAR) is a procedure alternative to arthrodesis which enables the biomechanical stabilization of the ankle joint. The procedure is associated with a high risk of complications, including fractures of the medial malleolus. In this study, the finite element method (FEM), based on CT examinations, was used to model the ankle fracture fixation after TAR. Three types of fracture stabilization were considered: screw, Blount staple, and both screw and Blount staple. In the in silico model, the maximum stress tension was found at prosthetic junctions with the base, cone, and talar components of the tibial prosthesis. When the fracture was stabilized with the Blount staple, …

Improving the cementation of the tibial component in knee arthroplasty : a study of four techniques in the cadaver.

2021

Aims The main objective of this study is to analyze the penetration of bone cement in four different full cementation techniques of the tibial tray. Methods In order to determine the best tibial tray cementation technique, we applied cement to 40 cryopreserved donor tibiae by four different techniques: 1) double-layer cementation of the tibial component and tibial bone with bone restrictor; 2) metallic cementation of the tibial component without bone restrictor; 3) bone cementation of the tibia with bone restrictor; and 4) superficial bone cementation of the tibia and metallic keel cementation of the tibial component without bone restrictor. We performed CT exams of all 40 subjects, and mea…
