Consumer biases in the perception of organizational greed

2022

This article extends current models of how consumers judge or perceive organizations as greedy by employing the theoretical framework of motivated moral reasoning. We show that inherent features of an organization (size and “black sheep” status) and its behavior (relative frequency) bias consumer perceptions of organizational greed. We use an experimental methodology, present subjects with vignettes describing different scenarios, validate our questionnaire using confirmatory factor analysis, and test our hypotheses by employing a general linear model with covariates. Our findings suggest that consumer perceptions of organizational greed are subject to three effects: the underdog effect (St…

Reconstructing Moral Development—Kohlberg Meets Oevermann

2015

Biography and biographical research are also part of the work of the late Lawrence Kohlberg. Coming from developmental research in terms of morality, i.e. justice, at the end of his career he became interested in some holistic (biographical) concepts of development, putting different research traditions such as those represented by Erik H. Erikson, James Marcia, William Perry and others and his own research together. It is in this direction that we are going to focus our research.

Purity rules in Pentecostal Uganda. Towards an analysis of relational rulework

2022

Rules concerning romantic relationships and sex—what we term ‘purity rules’—are central to Pentecostalism in Uganda. In  public church arenas, the born-again variant of the rules laid down during Uganda’s ‘ABC’ response to HIV/AIDS — ‘abstain till marriage and be faithful once you marry’—are presented as clear and non-negotiable. Yet in church members’ lives, and in their conversations with each other or in small church groups, space is often created for interpretation and deliberation about the officially strict rules. In this article, we use ethnographic material from fieldwork in urban Pentecostal churches in Uganda to describe how rules work on people, and people work on rules. We descr…

Study of the notion «voice of conciousness» in the works of Xavier Zubiri, after a historic view, showing its relevance in the last works and its connect…

2017

The aim of this paper is to study critically, with the help of Habermas´s moral theory, the current naturalistic approach to morality —which is based on both the evolutionary theory and neuroscience—. In doing so it will be explained the specifically moral use of practical reason, as Habermas propose; it will be compared this moral use with Kohlberg's postconventional stage of moral development; and it will be claimed that naturalistic approach cannot explain this stage, that can be understood as specific justice area.

Criminal Law and Morality Revisited: Interdisciplinary Perspectives

2020

The relationship between morality and criminal law must constantly evolve to meet the needs of changing times and circumstances. Social changes and new situations require new answers. This chapter will take the famous ‘Wolfenden Report’ (1957) as a starting point for reviewing the interaction of criminal law and morality, in the context of the broader relationship between politics, law and morality. Moral laws and civil laws have different limits and practical purposes, as is made clear in the writings of Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas and Spanish scholastics such as Francisco de Vitoria, Domingo de Soto and Francisco Suarez. Modern philosophers such as Descartes, Hobbes, Rousseau, Kant, and Mil…
