Contrasting patterns of temperature related mortality and hospitalization by cardiovascular and respiratory diseases in 52 Spanish cities.

2020

Climate change is a severe public health challenge. Understanding to what extent fatal and non-fatal consequences of specific diseases are associated with temperature may help to improve the effectiveness of preventive public health efforts. This study examines the effects of temperature on deaths and hospital admissions by cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, empathizing the difference between mortality and morbidity.

THU0582 Prognostic Factors of Macrophage Activation Syndrome in Adults: Analysis of 40 Cases in 2 Tertiary Referral Centers

2016

Background Macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) is a rare, life-threatening disease in which early diagnosis and aggressive therapeutic strategy may improve the outcome [1]. Due to its rarity, epidemiologic data are still lacking. Hyperferritinemia is frequently associated with MAS and might modulate the cytokines storm the latter contributing to the development of multi-organ failure [2]. Objectives In the current study, we aimed to investigate clinical data, treatments, and outcome of adult MAS patients secondary to autoimmune rheumatic disease. Methods We retrospectively investigated clinical data, treatments, and outcome of 40 adult MAS patients secondary to autoimmune rheumatic disease…

Temporal trends in chronic total occlusion interventions in Europe: 17626 procedures from the European Registry of Chronic total occlusion

2018

Background: The study focuses on the evolution of practice, procedural outcomes, and in-hospital complications of chronic total occlusion percutaneous coronary intervention in Europe. Methods and Results: Data from 17 626 procedures enrolled in European Registry of Chronic Total Occlusion between January 2008 and June 2015 were assessed. The mean patient age was 63.9±10.9 years; 85% were men. Procedural success increased from 79.7% to 89.3% through the study period. Patients enrolled during the years had increasing comorbidities and lesion complexity (J-CTO score [Multicenter CTO Registry of Japan] increased from 1.76±1.03 in 2008 to 2.17±0.91 in 2015; P for trend, <0.001). Multidimensional Prognostic Index and Mortality in Intermediate Care Facilities: A Retrospective Study.

2021

Multidimensional prognostic index (MPI) is a frailty assessment tool used for stratifying prognosis in older hospitalized people, but data regarding older people admitted to intermediate care facilities (ICFs) are missing. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether MPI can predict mortality in older patients admitted to the ICFs. MPI was calculated using different domains explored by a standard comprehensive geriatric assessment and categorized into tertiles (MPI-1 ≤ 0.20, MPI-2 0.20–0.34, MPI-3 &gt

Four-Year Results After Lung Volume Reduction Surgery for Emphysema

2004

OBJECTIVES: While the short-term results of lung volume reduction surgery are known, follow-up over several years has not often been described. The purpose of the present study was to describe results in terms of functional improvement, dyspnea, quality of life, and mortality over a 4-year period in patients with advanced emphysema. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fourteen successive patients were enrolled between 1996 and 2000 and studied prospectively for 4 years. All patients served as their own controls and initially received pulmonary rehabilitation and medication. Preoperative data were used as baseline and were compared to postoperative data over 4 years. The data analyzed were: functional imp…

Clinical course of ulcerative colitis

2008

. Dig Liver Dis. 2008 Jul;40 Suppl 2:S247-52. Clinical course of ulcerative colitis. Cottone M, Scimeca D, Mocciaro F, Civitavecchia G, Perricone G, Orlando A. Department of Medicine, Pneumology and Nutrition Clinic, V. Cervello Hospital, University of Palermo, Palermo, Italy. AIM: To provide a review of studies on prognosis in ulcerative colitis by reviewing the relevant population-based cohort studies. On the basis of incidence and population studies, ulcerative colitis has a favourable clinical course, with good quality of life, a chronic course characterized by at least one relapse, and a surgery rate of 30% after 10 years from diagnosis. Patients affected by severe ulcerative colitis h…

Association between night/after-hours surgery and mortality: a systematic review and meta-analysis

2020

Abstract Background The association between night/after-hours surgery and patients' mortality is unclear. Methods The protocol of this systematic review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42019128534). We searched Medline, PubMed, and EMBASE from inception until August 29, 2019 for studies examining an association between timing of surgical procedures (time of anaesthesia induction or surgery start) and mortality (within 30 days or in-hospital) in adult patients. Studies reporting patients' mortality after surgery performed during the weekend only were excluded. All analyses were done using the random-effects model. Results We included 40 observational studies (36 retrospective and four prospec…

Stress cardiac magnetic resonance for mortality prediction and decision-making: registry of 2496 elderly patients with chronic coronary syndrome

2022

Abstract Introduction and objectives The management of elderly patients with chronic coronary syndrome (CCS) is challenging. We explored the prognostic value and usefulness for decision-making of ischemic burden determined by vasodilator stress cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging in elderly patients with known or suspected CCS. Methods The study group comprised 2496 patients older than 70 years who underwent vasodilator stress CMR for known or suspected CCS. The ischemic burden (number of segments with stress-induced perfusion deficit) was calculated following the 17-segment model. Subsequently, we retrospectively analyzed its association with all-cause mortality and the effect of CMR-…
