How do individuals emotionally cope with the imminent real-world salience of mortality? DeWall and Baumeister as well as Kashdan and colleagues previously provided support that an increased use of positive emotion words serves as a way to protect and defend against mortality salience of one’s own contemplated death. Although these studies provide important insights into the psychological dynamics of mortality salience, it remains an open question how individuals cope with the immense threat of mortality prior to their imminent actual death. In the present research, we therefore analyzed positivity in the final words spoken immediately before execution by 407 death row inmates in Texas. By u…

Interest of studying the saliva metabolome, transcriptome and microbiome in screening for pancreatic cancer

2019

Abstract Introduction Pancreatic cancer is a public health problem because its mortality rate is close to its incidence rate. If it were possible to detect this cancer before the onset of symptoms, 5-year survival could reach 75%. Numerous studies have attempted to accelerate the diagnosis to improve survival. Saliva presents interesting characteristics as a fluid for screening and diagnosis. Its many components provide a promising source of constitutive biomarkers with a specific signature of the disease. The aim of this work was to determine the interest of studying the metabolome, the transcriptome and the microbiome of saliva in screening for pancreatic cancer. Materials and methods A r…

The burden of injury in Central, Eastern, and Western European sub-region: a systematic analysis from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 Study

2022

Abstract Background Injury remains a major concern to public health in the European region. Previous iterations of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study showed wide variation in injury death and disability adjusted life year (DALY) rates across Europe, indicating injury inequality gaps between sub-regions and countries. The objectives of this study were to: 1) compare GBD 2019 estimates on injury mortality and DALYs across European sub-regions and countries by cause-of-injury category and sex; 2) examine changes in injury DALY rates over a 20 year-period by cause-of-injury category, sub-region and country; and 3) assess inequalities in injury mortality and DALY rates across the countries…

Temporal Series Analysis on Avoidable Mortality for the Assessment of an Intervention Program in a Hospital

2017

Background: Avoidable mortality (AM) is one of the most important health indicators (HI) and represents the quality of care in a hospital. Objective: This study measured the efficacy of a training program for a hospital healthcare staff to reduce AM.Methods: This epidemiological study on community intervention analyzed time-series data on HI by semesters from 2008 to 2015. The pre-intervention phase was examined from January 2008 to December 2014; the intervention phase was investigated in the first semester of 2015; and the post-intervention phase was examined in the second semester of 2015.Results: Resindicate a series with a rising tendency until the 14th semester and a pronounced descent…

Evolution of Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton (Lepidoptera, Gracillariidae) and its parasitoids in the last five years in citrus orchards of western S…

2008

Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), is native to India, China, and other Southeast Asian countries that has spread rapidly since 1993 to all citrus-growing areas of the world. In Italy, the pest was first discovered during the autumn of 1994, in some citrus groves of Sardinia and, subsequently, in Sicily in the summer of 1995 showing a very rapid range expansion in other citrus-growing regions of Italy. Currently, damage to mature trees under typical Mediterranean conditions is considered only aesthetical, but P. citrella causes economic problems on young trees, nurseries, and overgraftings. Since the first occurrence of the citrus leafminer in Sicily, several ind…

Ground-level predation on artificial caterpillars indicates no enemy-free time for lepidopteran larvae

2017

Lepidoptera is one of the most diverse orders of insects, their larvae are very abundant in many habitats, and frequent prey of various predators. To decrease predation risk, caterpillars developed several means of defence, among them timing their activity to avoid predators (seeking enemy-free time). Although the enemy-free time hypothesis is often invoked to explain caterpillar behaviour, empirical evidence for it is scarce. We tested whether such enemy-free time exists in a temperate forest by comparing predation pressure on artificial caterpillars during day and night on the ground in forest fragments in Denmark. We found a high predation rate, 23.9% d(-1), and higher predation rate at …
