Procedural, Functional and Prognostic Outcomes Following Recanalization of Coronary Chronic Total Occlusions. Results of the Iberian Registry.

2019

Introduction and objectives: There is current controversy regarding the benefits of percutaneous recanalization (PCI) of chronic total coronary occlusions (CTO). Our aim was to determine acute and follow-up outcomes in our setting. Methods: Two-year prospective registry of consecutive patients undergoing PCI of CTO in 24 centers. Results: A total of 1000 PCIs of CTO were performed in 952 patients. Most were symptomatic (81.5%), with chronic ischemic heart disease (59.2%). Previous recanalization attempts had been made in 15%. The mean SYNTAX score was 19.5 +/- 10.6 and J-score was > 2 in 17.3%. A retrograde procedure was performed in 92 patients (9.2%). The success rate was 74.9% and was hi…

Use and durability of femoral vein for autologous reconstruction with infection of the aortoiliofemoral axis.

2014

Objective To analyze early and late mortality, venous morbidity, reinfection, and freedom from reintervention after using the femoral vein (FV) for vascular reconstruction with infection of the aortoiliofemoral axis. Methods By reviewing our database, 86 patients could be identified with implantation of FV grafts in infected fields between November 1995 and July 2012. The patient records were retrospectively analyzed and follow-up information obtained from patients or their general physician. Seventy-one patients presented with prosthetic graft infection and 15 with an infected aneurysm. For data analysis, patients were divided into an aortoiliac (n = 67) and a femoral group (n = 19). Study…

Liver transplantation with grafts from septuagenarians.

2008

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to evaluate our experience with orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) using grafts from septuagenarians. Patients and Methods Seventeen adult patients underwent transplantation with grafts from donors 70 years of age or older during an 8-year period. Results The median donor age was 73 years (range, 70–83). Eleven (64.7%) donors had experienced at least 1 hypotensive period and received vasoactive drugs. Median cold and warm ischemia times were 7.25 hours and 35 minutes, respectively. Two recipients underwent retransplantation because of dysfunction or primary nonfunction. Morbidity rate was 47% and hospital mortality rate was 23.5%. After …

Impact of pulmonary embolism on in-hospital mortality of patients with ischemic stroke

2020

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a frequent complication in immobile stroke patients and an important cause of death in stroke patients. We aimed to investigate predictors of PE and the impact of PE on survival of ischemic stroke patients.Patients were selected by screening the German nationwide inpatient sample (2005-2017) for ischemic stroke (ICD-code I63) and stratified for occurrence of PE (ICD-code I26). Impact of PE on mortality and predictors for PE in ischemic stroke patients were analysed.Overall, 2,914,546 patients were hospitalized due to ischemic stroke (50.5% females; 69.3% aged ≥70 years) in Germany 2005-2017. Among these, 0.4% had PE and 7.2% died during hospitalization. In-hospita…

Traditional Dietary Patterns and Risk of Mortality in a Longitudinal Cohort of the Salus in Apulia Study

2020

There is still room for further studies analyzing the long-term health impact of specific dietary patterns observable in regions belonging to the Mediterranean area. The aim of the study is to evaluate how much a diet practiced in southern Italy is associated to a risk of mortality. The study population included 2472 participants first investigated in 1985, inquiring about their frequencies of intake of 29 foods using a self-administered questionnaire covering the previous year. The population was followed up for mortality until 31 December 2017. Cox-based risk modeling referred to single foods, food groups, the results of principal component analysis (PCA), and a priori indexes. Single foo…

Restrictive pulmonary dysfunction at spirometry and mortality in the elderly

2008

SummaryObjectivesTo evaluate the association between pulmonary restriction and mortality in the elderly, taking into account potential confounders not considered in the past (disability, cognitive dysfunction, diabetes, and visceral obesity).DesignLongitudinal study.SettingCommunity-based.ParticipantsTwelve hundred sixty-five patients (51.9% men) aged 65–97 years old from the Salute Respiratoria nell'Anziano (SaRA) Italian multicentric study.MeasurementsParticipants were divided in 4 groups: normal spirometry (NS): FEV1/FVC≥70%, FVC≥80% of predicted; restrictive ventilatory pattern (RVP): FEV1/FVC≥70%, FVC<80%; obstructive ventilatory pattern (OVP): FEV1/FVC<70%, FVC≥80%, and mixed ventilat…

Prevalence of overweight and obesity in a rural southern Italy population and relationships with total and cardiovascular mortality: the Ventimiglia …

2001

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the prevalence of overweight and obesity and their relationships with the main cardiovascular risk factors in the population of Ventimiglia di Sicilia, a rural village in Southern Italy characterized by low cholesterol levels and by a low incidence of early coronary heart disease mortality. We related all deaths to body weight and fat distribution during an 8 y follow-up. DESIGN: Cross-sectional and prospective observational study. SUBJECTS: A total of 835 free-living individuals, 363 males and 472 females, of age between 20 and 69 y. MEASUREMENTS: In all participants body weight, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), cardiovascular risk factors and plasma lipids were measure…
