Chronicles of rice, mosquitoes and malaria in Spain: the case of the province of Valencia (18th-20th centuries)

This study analyzes the situation of the rice fields in the Valencia province (Eastern Spain) during the centuries XVIII-XX. This area, together with the region of Campo Arañuelo (Western Spain), is one of the territories with highest malaria prevalence during the Spain's Modern History. Medical, demographic, social, economic and legal issues related with the problematic of the rice during this epoch are also discussed. Furthermore, this article provides information about the supposed transmission mechanisms of the disease, as well as the fight against it through chemotherapeutic and environmental sanitation techniques.

Halofenozide (RH-0345) is an insect growth regulator belonging to the class of non-steroidal ecdysone agonists. In a previous study, halofenozide was found to be effective against larvae of Culex pipiens L. Several larval samplings of mosquitoes (Diptera, Culicidae) in different mountainous regions of the peninsular Spain were carried out. A total of 2796 specimens belonging to 18 species were collected, nevertheless the 72.5 % of these finds includes only three of them (Cx. hortensis hortensis, Cx. pipiens and Cs. longiareolata). The adaptation capacity to a varied typology of water bodies together with the marked multivoltinism that characterizes their biotic cycles are postulated as two of the principal reasons that explain their abundances. The altitudinal distribution as well as some information about the bioecology of all the species captured are also exposed.

Aplicación de la topología molecular a la predicción y optimización de la actividad repelente de mosquitos de derivados de la N-acylpiperidina

Se ha construido un modelo topológico-matemático con el fin de seleccionar nuevos repelentes de mosquito derivados de la N-acylpiperidina. Para ello se ha empleado la técnica estadística del análisis de regresión multilineal. Los compuestos empleados en la elaboración del modelo han sido caracterizados por medio de índices topológicos. Finalmente, se ha obtenido un modelo de 5 variables capaz de predecir los tiempos de protección de diversos repelentes de mosquitos derivados de la N-acylpiperidina (R2=0.8457 y Q2= 0.7486). AbstractGiven knowledge at the time, the recent 2015-2016 zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic probably could not have been predicted. Without the prior knowledge of ZIKV being already present in South America, and given the lack of understanding of key epidemiologic processes and long-term records of ZIKV cases in the continent, the best related prediction was for potential risk of an Aedes-borne disease epidemic.
