Slavenka Drakulić is a Croatian journalist and writer, known as a feminist who writes about the problems in women’s lives. In the novel Optužena (2012), she demonstrates in an interesting, artistic way the less known questions of motherhood, often ignored and tabooed in social discourse. BackgroundThe objective of this study was to evaluate the relationships in the family of origin in a sample of mothers who had their first child as teenagers (off-time motherhood). We also sought to answer the following question: are there any differences in the evaluation of relationships between mothers who gave birth to their first child in their teens and those who had their first baby during women’s best fertility age (on-time motherhood)? Artikkelissa tutkin uusliberaalin postfeminismin kehyksen läpi työntekijyyden ja äitiyden ristiriitaisuuksia ja ratkaisuyrityksiä. Empiirisenä kohteena on äitiyrittäjyysilmiö. Siinä on kyse yrittäjyydestä, joka on rinnakkaista tai alisteista naisen äitiroolille. Conforming to and resisting imposed identities : An autoethnography on academic motherhood

Purpose This research attempts to make sense of the experiences of two academic women who become mothers. Design/methodology/approach This paper is an autoethnography. Applying the autoethnographic method allows us to discuss cultural phenomena through personal reflections and experiences. Our autoethnographic reflections illustrate our struggles and attempts of resistance within discursive spaces where motherhood and our identity as academics intersect. Findings Our personal experiences combined with theoretical elaborations illuminate how the role of the mother continues to be dominated by such gendered discursive practices that conflict with the work role. Abstract Based on a critical interpretative review of existing qualitative research investigating accounts of ‘lived experience’ of surrogates and intended parents from a relational perspective, this article proposes a typology of surrogacy arrangements. The review is based on the analysis of 39 articles, which belong to a range of different disciplines (mostly sociology, social psychology, anthropology, ethnology, and gender studies). The number of interviews in each study range from as few as seven to over one hundred. This study explores mothers’ experiences of their children’s custody. The empirical data consists of twelve interviews with mothers with a child custody experience. Seven interviews were conducted twice, in years 2004 and 2008. The purpose of the dissertation is three-fold: 1) to clarify the construction of motherhood before and after the custody; 2) to define what kind of support the mothers received after the children had been placed outside home; and 3) to identify promotive and hindering factors for the empowerment of these mothers.
