On the sway stability improvement of car–caravan systems by articulated connections
2015
The present analysis is addressed to some promising connection arrangements between the towing vehicles and the towed trailers, where the two units are linked by four-bar isosceles trapeziums in place of the conventional pintle hitch. Two types of instability, of the divergent type or the oscillating type, may be analysed by the Routh–Hurwitz criterion or by the direct analysis of the characteristic equation. The constant term of this equation vanishes at the divergent instability threshold (zero of a real root), whereas the equation splits into two lower degree algebraic ‘sub-equations’ when the oscillating instability arises (pair of pure imaginary roots). A large field of geometrical con…
A back to back method for the temperature rise test of prefabricated substations: A case study
2015
In this work a back to back method is presented which allows to develop heating tests of prefabricated secondary substations with a limited number of supplying equipment (an induction regulator and a capacitor bank). The proposed method makes use of the transformer tap changers to create a voltage difference on the medium voltage side. In this way, only an adjunctive low voltage supply is needed. With the proposed test system, the heating tests are developed on a 1000 kVA prefabricated substation. Thanks to the experimental tests, the class of enclosure of the substation and the operating temperature and resistance of the power transformers are determined, according to the recommendations o…
Evaluation of radiated EMI in 42 V vehicle electrical systems by FDTD simulation
2007
In this paper a full 3D numerical scheme, based on the finite difference time domain method, is used to predict the electromagnetic radiated interference generated by 42 V vehicle power electronic driven electrical loads. An experimental set-up has been arranged on purpose in order to validate the proposed simulation tool. To this aim, the features of a semi-anechoic electromagnetic chamber have been exploited in order to operate in a shielded test site for the measurement of near field radiated emissions. Two different three-dimensional geometrical configurations of realistic vehicle installations of the loads, are studied. A comparative analysis among measured and computed results is perf…
The strategies for the diffusion of EVs: Focus on Norway and Italy
2017
The goal of this work is to predict e-mobility trends which are essential for understanding the market and the infrastructure development over the next years. Nowadays among the many and different standards and rules there are two charging categories for electric vehicles: High power DC and AC charging modes. It will be interesting to see which technology will prevail in the next few years and if the charging mode option on a given EV affects its sales performance. This study presents the current e-mobility scenario in Norway and Italy, in particular analyzing: EV technical and commercial features, electric vehicle market related national incentive policies, technical and diffusion connecto…
Electrochemical energy storage mitigating impact of electric vehicle on the electric grid: Two Italian case studies
2017
In the framework of the Italian R&D project i-Next two pilots plants were realized aiming at demonstrate benefits coming from the adoption of electrochemical energy storages (Lithium ion batteries and hydrogen) integrated with renewable energy sources. In the present study the preliminary results coming from the demo sites operations are reported paying attention to the impacts to the grid.
Analysis of driving cycles effects on power supply requirements of a fuel cell powered light-weight electric vehicle
2015
In this paper, fuel cell powered lightweight vehicles are addressed. A MATLAB/Simulink simulation model including motor, electrical drive, the fuel cell and power electronics systems is implemented. The model is well suited to perform the driving cycle test, which reproduces the speed pattern of an electric vehicle through urban, rural or motorway routes. This paper aims at investigating the most suited driving cycle to design high performances hybrid power supply for electric vehicles in terms of cruising range, cost and size of the power supply equipment. For this purpose, a legislative and a real-world driving cycles are selected. Effects of driving cycles on the power system requirement…
An automatic quality system for injection molding
2007
This paper describes a fully automatic quality system for injection molding. The proposed system includes an on-line measurement platform with a digital camera, a methodology for adaptive design of experiments (DOE), statistical modeling, process monitoring, and a closed loop process control. The system has been tested in the manufacturing of plastic parts for mobile phones.
Composite Material Recycling Technology—State-of-the-Art and Sustainable Development for the 2020s
2021
Recently, significant events took place that added immensely to the sociotechnical pressure for developing sustainable composite recycling solutions, namely (1) a ban on composite landfilling in Germany in 2009, (2) the first major wave of composite wind turbines reaching their End-of-Life (EoL) and being decommissioned in 2019–2020, (3) the acceleration of aircraft decommissioning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and (4) the increase of composites in mass production cars, thanks to the development of high volume technologies based on thermoplastic composites. Such sociotechnical pressure will only grow in the upcoming decade of 2020s as other countries are to follow Germany by limiting and ba…
Developing Passenger Car Equivalents for Freeways by Microsimulation
2015
Abstract In this paper a method of estimation of the passenger car equivalents for heavy vehicles on freeway is described. The variation in traffic quality was evaluated basing on a traffic demand characterized by different percentages of heavy vehicles. Aimsun micro-simulator was used to isolate traffic conditions difficult to capture on field, to replicate them to have a number of data as much as possible numerous, and to quantify the fundamental variables of traffic flow, namely the speed, flow, density, for a test freeway segment. Model calibration was accomplished by using traffic data collected at observation sections on the A22 Brenner Freeway, Italy. In order to check to what extent…
ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT VISUAL STRATEGIES OF 'ISOLATED VEHICLE' AND 'DISTURBED VEHICLE'
2017
This paper analyses the driver’ visual behaviour in the different conditions of ‘isolated vehicle’ and ‘disturbed vehicle’. If the meaning of the former is clear, the latter condition considers the influence on the driving behaviour of various objects that could be encountered along the road. These can be classified in static (signage, stationary vehicles at the roadside, etc.) and dynamic objects (cars, motorcycles, bicycles). The aim of this paper is to propose a proper analysis regarding the driver’s visual behaviour. In particular, the authors examined the quality of the visually informa-tion acquired from the entire road environment, useful for detecting any critical safety condition. …
