The Utility of Motor Evaluation in the Analysis of Effects of Motor Activities on Students

2017

ABSTRACT This research aims to evaluate the effects of motor activities on pupils at primary education. The two samples of pupils were divided as follows: the first group, experimental group consisted of twenty-five students with the age between ten and twelve years old, thirteen boys and twelve girls, group which followed a specific program containing agonistic, playful and initiation training in sports games; and the second group, the control group, consisted of twenty-five students with the age between ten and twelve years old, fourteen boys and eleven girls, group that took the classical physical education and sports curriculum. The motor evaluation tests at which the students have been…

Left Prefrontal Cortex Contributes to Motor Imagery: A Pilot Study

2013

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the motor cortex during motor imagery results in increased amplitudes of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) in muscles specific to the imagined movement. Functional MRI studies demonstrate that motor imagery involves a widespread neural network including prefrontal and parietal areas. The purpose of this pilot TMS study was to explore whether the left prefrontal cortex (PFC) is an active part of the motor imagery network. MEPs were recorded in 5 healthy subjects in tibialis anterior (TA) muscles during the imagined right ankle dorsiflexion while the neural processes in the left PFC were disturbed by a single TMS pulse 300ms prior to the leg area stim…

Transcranial direct current stimulation for treatment of freezing of gait: a cross-over study.

2014

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Progression of Parkinson's disease (PD) is frequently characterized by the occurrence of freezing of gait (FOG) representing a disabling motor complication. We aim to investigate safety and efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation of the primary motor cortex of PD patients with FOG. METHODS: In this cross-over, double-blind, sham-controlled study, 10 PD patients with FOG persisting in "on" state underwent anodal and sham direct current stimulation for 5 consecutive days. Clinical assessment over a 1-month period was performed. RESULTS: A significant improvement of gait, as assessed by the Stand Walk Sit test, with reduction in number and duration of FOG …

EFFECTS OF INDICAXANTHIN ON HUMAN MOTOR CORTICAL EXCITABILITY AND PLASTICITY

2021

The role of nutraceuticals has risen interest in the last decade for complex biological activities exerted on pathophysiological processes such as oxidative stress, inflammatory conditions and excitotoxicity. In this regard, the effects of nutraceuticals on basic functions of neuronal processes, such as cortical excitability and cortical plasticity are still to be unveiled. Translational studies performed on phytochemicals (PhC) with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties could trace the path for the possible modulation of neuronal excitability in humans, phenomena involved in neurodegenerative alterations and cell stress. In this context, Opuntia ficus indica is a mediterranean plant…
