The aim of the present thesis is to investigate the source of Stroop (interference) effects in weak bilinguals (Experiment 1) and in early language learning (Experiment 2-6). Participants performed a bilingual colour-word Stroop task with intermixed first language (L1) and second language (L2) words. The typical finding from the Stroop literature is slower and less accurate responding when the word and colour are incongruent (e.g., “red” in blue) relative to congruent (e.g., “red” in red). Interestingly, this congruency effect occurs for the colour words from both L1 and L2. What produces this congruency effect? Polarization is the phenomenon that describes the oscillations orientations of the light waves which are restricted in direction. Polarized light has multiple uses in the animal kingdom ranging from foraging, defense and communication to orientation and navigation. Chapter (1) briefly covers some important aspects of polarization and explains our research problem. L'any 1933, en ple periode feixista, el poeta avantguardista català J. V. Foix (1893-1987) visità amb la seua esposa la V Triennal d'arquitectura de Milà. Es tractava d'un viatge prou llarg que, a més de Milà, inclogué, pel que sabem, ciutats d'Itàlia i de Iugoslàvia, com ara Florència, Trieste, Roma, Venècia i Ljubljana. El motiu del desplaçament era l'assistència a l'XIé Congrés Internacional del PEN-Club que se celebrà en la primavera del 1933 a Dubrovnik (població per al nom de la qual Foix prefería fer servir el nom llatí de Ragusa). A canal surface is the envelope of a one-parameter familly of oriented spheres. With the knowledge of center an radius functions associated to it, it is easy to compute a parametrisation of the surface. In this article, we study the inverse operation, which is the search for the spheres in the canal surface. By selecting a point on the boundary and using the sphere space, we estimate the maximal sphere tangent with this point and a second point on the boundary. Cet espace de dimension 5 contient un paraboloïde de dimension 3 et isométrique à l'espace affine euclidien usuel E 3 , l'ensembles des sphères et plans orientés de E 3 regroupés sur une pseudo-sphère unité de dimension 4.
