[1] During the SAMUM field campaign in southern Morocco in May and June 2006 density currents generated by evaporative cooling after convective precipitation were frequently observed at the Sahara side of the Atlas Mountain chain. The associated strong surface cold-air outflow during such events has been observed to lead to dust mobilization in the foothills. [1] Evaporation of precipitation is a ubiquitous feature of dry and hot desert environments. The resulting cooling often generates density currents with strong turbulent winds along their leading edges, which can mobilize large amounts of dust. The orophilous dwarf shrub vegetation of Mt Troodos (Cyprus)

The results of a phytosociological survey on the orophilous vegetation dominated by dwarf, often thorny, scrubs occurring on the top of Mt. Troodos (Cyprus) are presented. The vegetation at issue ranges between 1500 and 1950 m, within the meso- and supramediterranean bioclimatic belts, where it dwells ultramaphic and serpentinitic substrata on windy slopes and summit plateaux. These plant communities face intense summer drought and cold winters, with av. two months of snow cover. The paper presents new data on the distribution of the superfamily Curculionoidea in the Eastern Beskidy Mountains. The study was carried out between 2003 and 2015 in the south-western part of this region. A list of 134 species of Curculionoidea classified into 7 families (Anthribidae, Attelabidae, Rhynchitidae, Nanophyidae, Apionidae, Curculionidae, Erirhinidae) is presented. Some of them are rare in Poland or have been collected in this region for the first time: Chonostropheus tristis, Aspidapion validum, Barynotus moerens, Dodecastichus inflatus, Otiorhynchus obsidianus, Lixus punctiventris, Tachyerges rufitarsis and Lignyodes suturatus.

Orophilous plant communities of the Pino-Juniperetea class, occurring in the Central and Eastern Mediterranean area, are examined. This vegetation is characterized by the dominance of trees and shrubs, mostly represented by conifers belonging to the genera Juniperus, Abies and Pinus. These communities are nowadays relegated to the supra- and oromediterranean belt, and show a fragmentary distribution, which is an evident proof of their relict connotation. The comparison among these communities, based on original and literature data, has highlighted a remarkable floristic and structural homogeneity, together with a series of geographical vicariances. Abstract We study a quasilinear elliptic problem depending on a parameter λ of the form − Δ p u = λ f ( u ) in Ω , u = 0 on ∂ Ω . We present a novel variational approach that allows us to obtain multiplicity, regularity and a priori estimate of solutions by assuming certain growth and sign conditions on f prescribed only near zero. More precisely, we describe an interval of parameters λ for which the problem under consideration admits at least three nontrivial solutions: two extremal constant-sign solutions and one sign-changing solution. Snow, as a fundamental reservoir of freshwater, is a crucial natural resource. Specifically, knowledge of snow density spatial and temporal variability could improve modelling of snow water equivalent, which is relevant for managing freshwater resources in context of ongoing climate change. The possibility of estimating snow density from remote sensing has great potential, considering the availability of satellite data and their ability to generate efficient monitoring systems from space. Fasciolosis caused by Fasciola hepatica in various South American countries located on the slopes of the Andes has been recognized as an important public health problem. However, the importance of this zoonotic hepatic parasite was neglected until the last decade. Countries such as Peru and Bolivia are considered to be hyperendemic areas for human and animal fasciolosis, and other countries such as Chile, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela are also affected.
