Burning mouth syndrome: a diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma
2012
Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) has been considered an enigmatic condition because the intensity of pain rarely corresponds to the clinical signs of the disease. Various local, systemic and psychological factors are associated with BMS, but its etiology is not fully understood. Also there is no consensus on the diagnosis and classification of BMS. A substantial volume of research has been focused on BMS during the last two decades. Progress has been made but the condition remains a fascinating, yet poorly understood area, in the field of oral medicine. Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in this disorder with the discovery that the pain of BMS may be neuropathic in origin and ori…
Hyaluronic acid treatment outcome on the post-extraction wound healing in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes: A randomized controlled sp…
2020
Background Hyaluronic acid is widely used in the medical field. However, there is a lack of research about its effect on patients with certain risks, such as compromised wound healing commonly found in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes. The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of hyaluronic acid on the post-extraction wound healing and pain in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes. Material and Methods The randomized controlled split-mouth study was designed, which included 30 patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes with a bilaterally same teeth in the lower jaw for extraction. The sockets treated with 0.8% hyaluronic acid represented the study gr…
Implant-supported overdenture with horizontal insertion for treating the edentulous atrophic maxilla: A case series
2020
Abstract Statement of problem Rehabilitation of edentulous patients with severe maxillary atrophy is a clinical challenge. Although several treatment options are available, the implant-supported overdenture has been widely advocated. However vertical insertion implant-supported overdentures have drawbacks, including wear, aging, and the continuous maintenance of retention systems. Whether an implant-supported overdenture with a horizontal insertion pathway can overcome these problems is unclear. Purpose The purpose of this observational study was to determine the clinical and biological behavior of a new type of implant-supported overdenture with a horizontal insertion pathway over a mean c…
2011
Lax, Antti Sosiaalisen median hyödyntäminen suusanallisessa e-markkinoinnissa Jyväskylä: Jyväskylän yliopisto, 2011, 26 s. Tietojärjestelmätiede, kandidaatin -tutkielma Ohjaaja: Salo, Markus Tässä tutkimuksessa tutkitaan sosiaalista mediaa ja suusanallista e-markkinointia kirjallisuuskatsauksen avulla. Tarkoituksena on selvittää miten aiheeseen liittyviä käsitteitä on määritelty kirjallisuudessa, sekä pyrkiä löytä-mään käsitettä parhaiten kuvaavat määritelmät. Samalla tutkitaan miten sosiaa-lista mediaa voidaan hyödyntää suusanallisessa markkinoinnissa. Aluksi tutkimuksessa perehdytään sosiaalisen median käsitteeseen sekä muihin siihen liittyviin käsitteisiin, joiden kautta sosiaalinen medi…
Spatial distribution of phytoplankton and picocyanobacteria in Lake Tanganyika in March and April 1998
2003
The spatial distribution of phytoplankton and picocyanobacteria was studied in Lake Tanganyika in relation to environmental factors. Sampling was conducted within three weeks during the wet season of 1998 when the water column stratification was most stable. The secchi depth varied between 11 and 16 m, except off the river Malagarasi (3 m). The depth of the euphotic zone was 33 to 56 m. Altogether, 218 phytoplankton taxa were identified. Their total biomass varied between 13 and 88 mg m−3 fresh weight. Picocyanobacteria were present at very high densities (104 to 6 × 10 5 cells ml−1). The influence of the river Malagarasi appeared to spread along the water surface because of the lower densi…
The role of olfaction in the elaboration and use of the Chardonnay wine concept
2005
The existence of a Chardonnay wine concept was explored in two experiments. In the first experiment, 28 Chardonnay wine experts assessed in terms of a score the degree of representativeness of 48 white wines according to their own Chardonnay wine concept. The samples were 29 wines made from Chardonnay grapes and 19 wines made from other grape varieties (Aligote, Melon de Bourgogne, Sylvaner, Sauvignon blanc, Chenin, Marsanne and Pinot blanc). Two assessment conditions were conducted: orthonasal and global (orthonasal plus retronasal and mouthfeel perceptions). Globally, scores were higher for Chardonnay wines than for non-Chardonnay ones and the consensus among experts demonstrated the exis…
Does social climate influence positive eWOM? A study of heavy-users of online communities.
2018
Abstract This paper provides a deeper understanding of the role of social influences on positive eWOM behaviour (PeWOM) of heavy-users of online communities. Drawing on Social Interaction Utility Framework, Group Marketing and Social Learning Theories, we develop and test a research model integrating the interactions between the social climate of a website and Interpersonal Influences in PeWOM. 262 Spanish heavy-users of online communities were selected and the data analysed using partial least squares equation modelling. Overall, the model explains 59% of the variance of PeWOM on online communities. Findings reveal that interaction with other members of the online community (Social Presenc…
Immunomodulatory effects of dietary β-1,3-glucan from Euglena gracilis in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) immersion vaccinated against Yersinia r…
2012
Abstract Potential immunostimulatory effects of orally administered β-glucan were investigated in combination with immersion vaccination against enteric redmouth disease caused by Yersinia ruckeri in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). A linear, unbranched and pure (purity ≥98%) β-1,3-glucan (syn. paramylon) from the alga Euglena gracilis was applied at an inclusion level of 1% β-glucan in feed administered at a rate of 1% biomass day−1 for 84 consecutive days. Fish were vaccinated after two weeks of experimental feeding and bath challenged with live Y. ruckeri six weeks post-vaccination. Blood and head kidney were sampled at day 0, 13 (1 day pre-vaccination), 15, 55, 59 (day 3 post-challe…
Automated Characterization of Mouth Activity for Stress and Anxiety Assessment
2016
International audience; Non-verbal information portrayed by human facial expression, apart from emotional cues also encompasses information relevant to psychophysical status. Mouth activities in particular have been found to correlate with signs of several conditions; depressed people smile less, while those in fatigue yawn more. In this paper, we present a semi-automated, robust and efficient algorithm for extracting mouth activity from video recordings based on Eigen-features and template-matching. The algorithm was evaluated for mouth openings and mouth deformations, on a minimum specification dataset of 640x480 resolution and 15 fps. The extracted features were the signals of mouth expa…
