Classroom-based physical activity and teachers’ instructions on students’ movement in conventional classrooms and open learning spaces

2022

AbstractAs a result of educational reforms in many countries, including Finland, new or renovated comprehensive schools have increasingly begun to incorporate open and flexible designs and principles. Multipurpose and adaptable open learning spaces can provide children with amplified opportunities to be physically active during general education. Classroom-based physical activity has been associated with better academic-related outcomes and students’ on-task behaviour, while overall physical activity has been associated with better health. In the present study, we investigated the effects of classroom type, gender and grade level on classroom-based physical activity, and the associations be…

Eye-Movement Study of Mechanics Problem Solving Using Multimodal Options

2020

We used an eye-tracking method to investigate students’ approaches to solving a physics task using various representations. Eight upper-secondary school students from Finland took part in the study. We found that students who preferred either the text or graph representations watched the options differently, but they used both representations to be sure of their solution. Transitions between text and graph alternatives were different for students preferring either text or graph representations. Interviews revealed typical misconceptions about the concept of force. Implications for physics instruction are presented. peerReviewed

Visual cues improve students’ understanding of divergence and curl: Evidence from eye movements during reading and problem solving

2019

The coordination of multiple external representations is important for learning, but yet a difficult task for students, requiring instructional support. The subject in this study covers a typical relation in physics between abstract mathematical equations (definitions of divergence and curl) and a visual representation (vector field plot). To support the connection across both representations, two instructions with written explanations, equations, and visual representations (differing only in the presence of visual cues) were designed and their impact on students’ performance was tested. We captured students’ eye movements while they processed the written instruction and solved subsequent c…

Disrupting neural activity related to awake-state sharp wave-ripple complexes prevents hippocampal learning

2012

Oscillations in hippocampal local-field potentials (LFPs) reflect the crucial involvement of the hippocampus in memory trace formation: theta (4–8 Hz) oscillations and ripples (~200 Hz) occurring during sharp waves are thought to mediate encoding and consolidation, respectively. During sharp wave-ripple complexes (SPW-Rs), hippocampal cell firing closely follows the pattern that took place during the initial experience, most likely reflecting replay of that event. Disrupting hippocampal ripples using electrical stimulation either during training in awake animals or during sleep after training retards spatial learning. Here, adult rabbits were trained in trace eyeblink conditioning, a hippoc…

Znamienici profesorowie i absolwenci królewskich katolickich seminariów nauczycielskich w Pilchowicach i Pyskowicach

2018

Royal Catholic Teacher Seminars, which fist appeared at the beginning of the 19th century as a result of Prussian educational reform, took on an important mission of training future organists. Therefore in many Silesian parishes of the 19th and the fist half of the 20th centuries it was a common practice for teachers to be organists at the same time. As it is shown by the experiences of Upper Silesia, teacher seminars were the source of highly qualifid church musicians. This resulted from the commitment of very good and skilful music teachers who produced remarkable graduates that later became important fiures in Silesian tradition of church music. Among teacher seminars of Upper Silesia th…

Beyond Representative Democracy: Real Democracy and Social Movements in the Spanish State

2017

Patriotyzm i służba w działalności Heleny Radlińskiej podczas II wojny światowej (1939-1944)

2018

STATBOX Concept for Simulation of Urban Phenomena

2013

Abstract An urban environment is a dynamic system which is constantly changing in terms of space and time. There are two dimensions in any urban environment – the physical dimension and the functional dimension. All of the structures of an urban environment interact and people are the intermediaries in this process. The spatial structure of cities has been studied from various perspectives by architects, urban planners, environmental scientists, economists, geographers etc. Constant monitoring that is based on remote sensing, spatial statistics, simulation etc., is needed to make on going note of transformation in the various types of land use that exist, movement of people and business env…

On Happy Dance : Emotion Recognition in Dance Movements

2013

Movements are capable of conveying emotions, as shown for instance in studies on both non-verbal gestures and music-specific movements performed by instrumentalists or professional dancers. Since dancing/moving to music is a common human activity, this study aims at investigating whether quasi-spontaneous music-induced movements of non-professional dancers can convey emotional qualities as well. From a movement data pool of 60 individuals dancing to 30 musical stimuli, the performances of four dancers that moved most notably, and four stimuli representing happiness, anger, sadness, and tenderness were chosen to create a set of stimuli containing the four audio excerpts, 16 video excerpts (w…

Personality traits correlate with characteristics of music-induced movement

2009

Individual factors such as personality are essential for understanding musical experiences and engagement with music. Personality has been shown to be related to musical preferences and experiences, but little is known about how it affects music-related movement. The current study examined whether personality traits were related to the way in which people moved spontaneously to music. Twenty young adults (7 males, and 13 females, mean age 24.0 years) were asked to move spontaneously to a 12 bar blues sequence, and their movements were tracked with an optical motion capture system. Movement was measured with 16 variables which assessed the amount and type of movements exhibited, such as spee…
