Sectoral policies as drivers of forest management and ecosystems services: A case study in Bavaria, Germany

2023

European countries have national sectoral polices to regulate and promote the provision of a wide range of forest ecosystems services (FES). However, potential incoherencies among these policies can negatively affect the efficient provision of FES. In this work, we evaluated the coherence among three national policies from Germany and their ability to effectively provide FES in the future: the Forest Strategy 2020 (FS), the National Strategy on Biological Diversity (BDS), and the German National Policy Strategy on Bioeconomy (BES). Using forest inventory data from the Federal State of Bavaria, we simulated a range of forest management options under three climate trajectories for 100 years i…

Trade-offs among intensive forestry, ecosystem services and biodiversity in boreal forests

2018

Finnish forests are used extensively for timber production but are also providers of other ecosystem services and harbor unique biodiversity. The ecosystem services approach has so far been used marginally in the context of Finnish forestry; however, due to the multiple values associated with Finnish forests and the impacts forestry operations have on forest ecosystems, it is clearly applicable in this context. In this thesis, I studied the occurrence and severity of trade-offs among ecosystem services and biodiversity conservation in Finnish forests. I used forest inventory data, forest growth simulations, and multi-objective optimization to reveal how the severity of the trade-offs varies…

Pareto frontier in economic-statistical design of a dynamic c chart

2015

The present paper proposes an economic-statistical multi-objective design procedure for a dynamic c control chart. In detail, a mixed integer non-linear constrained mathematical model is formulated to solve the treated problem, whereas the Pareto frontier is described by the ε-constraint method. To show the employment of the proposed procedure a numerical case is solved and the related considerations are given.

An Hypervolume based constraint handling technique for multi-objective optimization problems

2011

Formulation of structural optimization problems usually leads to the individuation of one or more objective functions to be minimized under different constraints. Many multi-objective evolutionary algorithms are approached by a Pareto-compliant ranking method, where no a priori information on the problem is needed and the concept of non-dominated solutions is used. In this paper a constraint handling technique based on the concept of hypervolume indicator is presented. Initially proposed to compare different multi-objective algorithms hypervolume indicator is the only single set quality measure to reflects the dominance of solution’s sets. The constraint handling technique proposed use an e…

A multi-objective and multi-criteria approach for district metered area design: water operation and quality analysis

2019

Water distribution network (WDN) operation may be improved by district metered area (DMA) design [1]. A first step to create DMAs uses graph theory and non-supervised learning, where physical features of the WDN, such as node coordinates, elevation and demand, are used for clustering purposes [2]. A second step is related to the necessary isolation of the clustered elements. For isolation purposes, it is important to determine the DMA entrances and, consequently, the needed cut-off valves. Closure of pipes and definition of DMA entrances can be set as an optimization problem with the costs associated to the valves, which are linked to pipe diameters, as a primary objective. However, placeme…

A visualization technique for accessing solution pool in interactive methods of multiobjective optimization

2015

<pre>Interactive methods of <span>multiobjective</span> optimization repetitively derive <span>Pareto</span> optimal solutions based on decision maker's preference information and present the obtained solutions for his/her consideration. Some interactive methods save the obtained solutions into a solution pool and, at each iteration, allow the decision maker considering any of solutions obtained earlier. This feature contributes to the flexibility of exploring the <span>Pareto</span> optimal set and learning about the optimization problem. However, in the case of many objective functions, the accumulation of derived solutions makes accessing the sol…

A Multi-Objective Design Approach for the c Chart Considering Taguchi Loss Function

2014

The present paper proposes a multi-objective design approach for the c chart, considering in the optimization process of the chart parameters both the statistical and the economic objectives. In particular, the minimization of the hourly total quality related costs is the considered objective to carry out the economic goal, whereas the statistical objective is reached by the minimization the out-of-control average run length of the chart. A mixed integer non-linear constrained mathematical model is formulated to solve the treated multi-objective optimization problem, whereas the Pareto optimal frontier is described by the «-constraint method. In order to show the employment of the proposed …

Water distribution network robust design based on energy surplus index maximization

2015

The aim of this paper is to show that energy surplus indices, such as resilience index, besides providing a very good indirect measure of water distribution network reliability to be adopted during the design phase, represent also a valuable and effective indicator of the robustness of the network in alternative network scenarios, and can thus be profitably used in condition of future demands uncertainty. The methodology adopted consisted of (I) multi-objective design optimization performed in order to minimize construction costs while maximizing the resilience index; (II) retrospective performance assessment of the alternative solutions of the Pareto front obtained, under demand conditions…

Surrogate-assisted multicriteria optimization: Complexities, prospective solutions, and business case

2017

Complexity in solving real-world multicriteria optimization problems often stems from the fact that complex, expensive, and/or time-consuming simulation tools or physical experiments are used to evaluate solutions to a problem. In such settings, it is common to use efficient computational models, often known as surrogates or metamodels, to approximate the outcome (objective or constraint function value) of a simulation or physical experiment. The presence of multiple objective functions poses an additional layer of complexity for surrogate-assisted optimization. For example, complexities may relate to the appropriate selection of metamodels for the individual objective functions, extensive …

Multi-objective parameter identification via ACOR algorithm

2009

The spreading of advanced constituive models, needed to model complex phenomena, makes necessary to solve difficult parameter identification problems. The need of multiple tests to fully characterize the experimental behaviour makes the parameter identification problem a multi objective one. Unlike conventional techniques, based on the formulation of an aggregate scalar ob- jective function, in the present work the problem is addressed using a new multi objective algorithm obtained extending the continuous Ant Colony Optimization algorithm. Mathematical tests and ap- plication to a real world problem are performed and different performance measures are used to asses the performance of the a…
