A simulation tool for analysis and design of reverse electrodialysis using concentrated brines

2015

Abstract Reverse electrodialysis (SGP-RE or RED) represents a viable technology for the conversion of the salinity gradient power into electric power. A comprehensive model is proposed for the RED process using sea or brackish water and concentrated brine as feed solutions. The goals were (i) reliably describing the physical phenomena involved in the process and (ii) providing information for optimal equipment design. For such purposes, the model has been developed at two different scales of description: a lower scale for the repeating unit of the system (cell pair), and a higher scale for the entire equipment (stack). The model was implemented in a process simulator, validated against orig…

A Two-Stage Reconstruction of Microstructures with Arbitrarily Shaped Inclusions

2020

The main goal of our research is to develop an effective method with a wide range of applications for the statistical reconstruction of heterogeneous microstructures with compact inclusions of any shape, such as highly irregular grains. The devised approach uses multi-scale extended entropic descriptors (ED) that quantify the degree of spatial non-uniformity of configurations of finite-sized objects. This technique is an innovative development of previously elaborated entropy methods for statistical reconstruction. Here, we discuss the two-dimensional case, but this method can be generalized into three dimensions. At the first stage, the developed procedure creates a set of black synthetic …

A multi-scale area-interaction model for spatio-temporal point patterns

2018

Models for fitting spatio-temporal point processes should incorporate spatio-temporal inhomogeneity and allow for different types of interaction between points (clustering or regularity). This paper proposes an extension of the spatial multi-scale area-interaction model to a spatio-temporal framework. This model allows for interaction between points at different spatio-temporal scales and the inclusion of covariates. We fit the proposed model to varicella cases registered during 2013 in Valencia, Spain. The fitted model indicates small scale clustering and regularity for higher spatio-temporal scales.

A multi-scale method for complex flows of non-Newtonian fluids

2021

We introduce a new heterogeneous multi-scale method for the simulation of flows of non-Newtonian fluids in general geometries and present its application to paradigmatic two-dimensional flows of polymeric fluids. Our method combines micro-scale data from non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) with macro-scale continuum equations to achieve a data-driven prediction of complex flows. At the continuum level, the method is model-free, since the Cauchy stress tensor is determined locally in space and time from NEMD data. The modelling effort is thus limited to the identification of suitable interaction potentials at the micro-scale. Compared to previous proposals, our approach takes into acco…

Forest planning across Europe: the spatial scale, tools, and inter-sectoral integration in land-use planning

2014

New approaches to forest planning are needed to support the transition of European forests to sustainable management. The aim of this study is to review forest planning systems already in place throughout Europe by exploring a set of case-study countries reflecting the main silvicultural schools of Western Europe, including Belgium, Finland, France, Italy, Portugal, and Slovenia. A literature review and case-study data were used to assess the scale factors (vertical logic) as well as the relationships between forest planning and other environmental6 land-use planning sectors (horizontal logic). The influence of EU policy on the development of forest planning is also discussed. As assessed u…

A Multi-Scale Analysis to Measure Ecological Impact of LUCC in a Built Environment

2015

International audience; In human-dominated environments, efforts to preserve ecological connectivity between animal species habitats is an important issue. These areas are indeed concern by anthropogenic pressures leading to rapid land use and land cover changes (LUCC). This is particularly the case of urban fringes, affected by many changes (e.g. urban sprawl) specifically for several decades.Of all the methods to model the ecological networks connectivity, landscape graphs provide a relevant approach, which interest for decision support in land-use planning has already been highlighted (Foltête et al., 2014). This approach allows to represent ecological networks in a simplified way as gra…

Automatic image enhancement by picture fusion

2005

This paper describes an automatic technique able to fuse different images of the same scene, acquired with different camera settings, in order to obtain an enhanced single representation of the interested. This allows to extend the functionalities (depth of field, dynamic range) of medium and low cost digital cameras. When Multi-Scale Decomposition (MSD) is used on differently focused images, magnification and blurring effects of lens focusing systems often compromise the final image with unpleasant artifacts. In our approach new techniques able to reduce these artifacts are introduced. Even if the algorithm has been essentially designed to extend depth of field it can be also used on multi…

Meshless meso-modeling of masonry in the computational homogenization framework

2017

In the present study a multi-scale computational strategy for the analysis of structures made-up of masonry material is presented. The structural macroscopic behavior is obtained making use of the Computational Homogenization (CH) technique based on the solution of the Boundary Value Problem (BVP) of a detailed Unit Cell (UC) chosen at the mesoscale and representative of the heterogeneous material. The attention is focused on those materials that can be regarded as an assembly of units interfaced by adhesive/cohesive joints. Therefore, the smallest UC is composed by the aggregate and the surrounding joints, the former assumed to behave elastically while the latter show an elastoplastic soft…

Multivariate and Multiscale Complexity of Long-Range Correlated Cardiovascular and Respiratory Variability Series

2020

Assessing the dynamical complexity of biological time series represents an important topic with potential applications ranging from the characterization of physiological states and pathological conditions to the calculation of diagnostic parameters. In particular, cardiovascular time series exhibit a variability produced by different physiological control mechanisms coupled with each other, which take into account several variables and operate across multiple time scales that result in the coexistence of short term dynamics and long-range correlations. The most widely employed technique to evaluate the dynamical complexity of a time series at different time scales, the so-called multiscale …
