Assessing the Effects of VEGF Releasing Microspheres on the Angiogenic and Foreign Body Response to a 3D Printed Silicone-Based Macroencapsulation De…

2021

Macroencapsulation systems have been developed to improve islet cell transplantation but can induce a foreign body response (FBR). The development of neovascularization adjacent to the device is vital for the survival of encapsulated islets and is a limitation for long-term device success. Previously we developed additive manufactured multi-scale porosity implants, which demonstrated a 2.5-fold increase in tissue vascularity and integration surrounding the implant when compared to a non-textured implant. In parallel to this, we have developed poly(ε-caprolactone-PEG-ε-caprolactone)-b-poly(L-lactide) multiblock copolymer microspheres containing VEGF, which exhibited continued release of bioa…

Primitives detection by a discrete and non linear approach : application to the detection and caracterization of interest points for 3D meshes

2010

This manuscript is dedicated to the detection and caracterization of interest points for 3D meshes. First of all, we show the limitations of the curvature measure on sharp edges, the measure usually used for the analysis of meshes. Then, we present a generalization of the SUSAN operator for meshes, named SUSAN-3D. The saliency measure proposed quantify the local variation of the surface and classify directly the analysed vertices in five classes: salient, crest, flat, valley and cavity. The meshes under consideration are manifolds and can be closed or non-closed, regulars or irregulars, dense or not and noised or not. The accuracy of the SUSAN-3D operator is compared to two curvature operat…

Hierarchical modelling of electrodialysis desalination process

2017

In recent years, thanks to the development of ion exchange membranes (IEMs) manufacturing industry, Electrodialysis (ED) is spreading as a viable alternative to the more common membrane desalination processes. Therefore, many research efforts have been recently devoted to studying this process both via experimental and modelling activities. In the present work a novel mathematical model for ED was developed using a multi-scale approach. This method allows to build a hierarchical simulation tool that is able to gauge the impact of all the phenomena involved in the process. The lower-hierarchy model describes the behaviour of the elementary unit of an ED stack, namely cell pair. This model is…

Modelling of Electrodialysis units by a multi-scale process simulator

Drinking water production by desalination is an interesting alternative to face water scarcity issues. Electrodialysis (ED) is an electro-membrane process that is actually gaining attention as a competitive alternative for seawater and brackish water desalination due to recent developments in manufacturing of high performance ion exchange membranes (IEMs). In this context, a suitable process simulator can be a very effective tool in order to drive the design of optimized ED systems. In this work a novel mathematical model of ED units was developed by a hierarchical simulation strategy of separation of scales, in order to address the full simulation problem. The model was implemented in PSE …

Process modelling of a novel acid-base flow battery based on bipolar-membranes

2021

The storage of electrical energy is crucial for a deeper penetration of renewable energies with intermittent nature, e.g. solar and wind energy. The Acid/Base Flow Battery (AB-FB) is a novel, sustainable, environmental-friendly storage technology with high energy density of the electrolyte solutions. The process is based on reversible electrodialytic techniques with bipolar membranes, which convert the electrical energy in the chemical energy associated to pH gradients and vice versa. The charge phase is a bipolar membrane electrodialysis process, while the discharge phase is a bipolar membrane reverse electrodialysis process. The stack consists of several repetitive units, called triplets,…

A process model of electrodialysis including membrane deformation effects

2020

Electrodialysis (ED) is an electro-driven process that makes use of ion exchange membranes (IEMs) under an applied electric field. The main application of ED is the desalination for drinking water production. A transmembrane pressure (TMP) distribution may arise in ED stacks due to an uneven pressure distribution in the two fluid channels, thus causing membrane/channel deformation and flow redistribution. This can occur in large-scale non-parallel configurations, e.g. crossflow arrangements. Detrimental effects of membrane deformation have widely been studied with reference to several membrane processes. However, this aspect has been neglected in ED applications. In this work, a novel proce…

On multi-scale percolation behaviour of the effective conductivity for the lattice model

2015

Macroscopic properties of heterogeneous media are frequently modelled by regular lattice models, which are based on a relatively small basic cluster of lattice sites. Here, we extend one of such models to any cluster's size kxk. We also explore its modified form. The focus is on the percolation behaviour of the effective conductivity of random two- and three-phase systems. We consider only the influence of geometrical features of local configurations at different length scales k. At scales accessible numerically, we find that an increase in the size of the basic cluster leads to characteristic displacements of the percolation threshold. We argue that the behaviour is typical of materials, w…

A multi-scale approach for testing and detecting peaks in time series

2020

An approach is presented that combines a statistical test for peak detection with the estimation of peak positions in time series. Motivated by empirical observations in neuronal recordings, we aim at investigating peaks of different heights and widths. We use a moving window approach to compare the differences of estimated slope coefficients of local regression models. We combine multiple windows and use the global maximum of all different processes as a test statistic. After rejection, a multiple filter algorithm combines peak positions estimated from multiple windows. Analysing neuronal activity recorded in anaesthetized mice, the procedure could identify significant differences between …

Study and Comparison of Surface Roughness Measurements

2014

Journées du Groupe de Travail en Modélisation Géométrique (GTMG'14), Lyon; This survey paper focus on recent researches whose goal is to optimize treatments on 3D meshes, thanks to a study of their surface features, and more precisely their roughness and saliency. Applications like watermarking or lossy compression can benefit from a precise roughness detection, to better hide the watermarks or quantize coarsely these areas, without altering visually the shape. Despite investigations on scale dependence leading to multi-scale approaches, an accurate roughness or pattern characterization is still lacking, but challenging for those treatments. We think there is still room for investigations t…

An Early Stage Researcher's Primer on Systems Medicine Terminology

2021

Background: Systems Medicine is a novel approach to medicine, that is, an interdisciplinary field that considers the human body as a system, composed of multiple parts and of complex relationships at multiple levels, and further integrated into an environment. Exploring Systems Medicine implies understanding and combining concepts coming from diametral different fields, including medicine, biology, statistics, modeling and simulation, and data science. Such heterogeneity leads to semantic issues, which may slow down implementation and fruitful interaction between these highly diverse fields. Methods: In this review, we collect and explain more than100 terms related to Systems Medicine. Thes…
