The aim of this thesis is to assess how the discoursesof migration and multiculturalism arebeendepicted in the Finnish and Canadian policy documents. This was assessed by using the concept of governmentality and multiculturalism as the theoretical framework of the study. The concept of governmentality was used as a background to examine and interpret power relations and discourses in the data and how they influence contemporarydebate in these societies. En este ensayo se pretende mostrar que esa diversidad de pareceres tiene, como uno de sus supuestos fundamentales, diferentes concepciones de la noción de cultura. Con tal fin, se expone críticamente la política del reconocimiento multicultural de Charles Taylor, utilizando para ello algunos aspectos de la identidad cultural según Clifford Geertz, Zygmund Bauman y Michael Ignatieff.

In this article I read autobiographies by East Europeans who immigrated to Canada in connection with the Second World War as examples of transcultural life writing. My focus on the representation of return visits of these loyal Canadian citizens to their country of origin after 1989 reveals the underlying intention of relating the experience of life in a multicultural democratic society to the emergence of a new political consciousness in Eastern Europe.
