K− over K+ multiplicity ratio for kaons produced in DIS with a large fraction of the virtual-photon energy

The K$^{-}$ over K$^{+}$ multiplicity ratio is measured in deep-inelastic scattering, for the first time for kaons carrying a large fraction $z$ of the virtual-photon energy. The data were obtained by the COMPASS collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam and an isoscalar $^6$LiD target. The regime of deep-inelastic scattering is ensured by requiring $Q^2>1$ (GeV/$c)^2$ for the photon virtuality and $W>5$ GeV/$c^2$ for the invariant mass of the produced hadronic system. Kaons are identified in the momentum range from 12 GeV/$c$ to 40 GeV/$c$, thereby restricting the range in Bjorken-$x$ to $0.010.75$. On the existence and multiplicity of solutions for Dirichlet's problem for fractional differential equations

In this paper, by using variational methods and critical point theorems, we prove the existence and multiplicity of solutions for boundary value problem for fractional order differential equations where Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives and Caputo fractional derivatives are used. Our results extend the second order boundary value problem to the non integer case. Moreover, some conditions to determinate nonnegative solutions are presented and examples are given to illustrate our results.
Infection of murine hepatocyte cultures by herpes simplex virus (HSV) 1 and 2

A study was undertaken of the interaction between liver cells and Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) in vitro. Hepatocytes were obtained from HSV-resistant (C57/B16) and from HSV-susceptible (BALB/c, A/J, C3H) mouse strains and cultured according to standard methods. Each culture was infected with several strains of HSV-type 1 or of HSV-type 2, respectively. The multiplicity of infection was 5. The cytopathic effect was evaluated by light- and electron-microscopy. The number of infectious particles was determined using rabbit kidney or Vero cell cultures. New ALICE detectors for Run 3 and 4 at the CERN LHC

Abstract Run 3 at the CERN LHC is scheduled to start in March 2021. In preparation for this new data taking period the ALICE experiment is making major modifications to its subsystems and is introducing three new detectors: the new Inner Tracking System, the Muon Forward Tracker, and the Fast Interaction Trigger. The new detectors will enhance tracking, especially at low transverse momenta, improve vertexing, provide the required triggering, fast timing, luminosity, and forward multiplicity functionality. Modeling multipartite virus evolution: the genome formula facilitates rapid adaptation to heterogeneous environments

Multipartite viruses have two or more genome segments, and package different segments into different particle types. Although multipartition is thought to have a cost for virus transmission, its benefits are not clear. Recent experimental work has shown that the equilibrium frequency of viral genome segments, the setpoint genome formula (SGF), can be unbalanced and host-species dependent. These observations have reinvigorated the hypothesis that changes in genome-segment frequencies can lead to changes in virus-gene expression that might be adaptive. Evolution of fluctuations in the initial state of heavy-ion collisions from RHIC to LHC

Fluctuations in the initial state of heavy-ion collisions are larger at RHIC energy than at LHC energy. This fact can be inferred from recent measurements of the fluctuations of the particle multiplicities and of elliptic flow performed at the two different energies. We show that an analytical description of the initial energy-density field and its fluctuations motivated by the color glass condensate (CGC) effective theory predicts and quantitatively captures the measured energy evolution of these observables. The crucial feature is that fluctuations in the CGC scale like the inverse of the saturation scale of the nuclei.
Two-way automata with multiplicity

We introduce the notion of two-way automata with multiplicity in a semiring. Our main result is the extension of Rabin, Scott and Shepherdson's Theorem to this more general case. We in fact show that it holds in the case of automata with multiplicity in a commutative semiring, provided that an additional condition is satisfied. We prove that this condition is also necessary in a particular case. An application is given to zig-zag codes using special two-way automata.

The physics of the initial conditions of heavy ion collisions is dominated by the nonlinear gluonic interactions of QCD. These lead to the concepts of parton saturation and the Color Glass Condensate (CGC). We discuss recent progress in calculating multi-gluon correlations in this framework, prompted by the observation that these correlations are in fact easier to compute in a dense system (nucleus-nucleus) than a dilute one (proton-proton).
