Diving below the spin-down limit: Constraints on gravitational waves from the energetic young pulsar PSR J0537-6910

2021

We present a search for continuous gravitational-wave signals from the young, energetic X-ray pulsar PSR J0537-6910 using data from the second and third observing runs of LIGO and Virgo. The search is enabled by a contemporaneous timing ephemeris obtained using NICER data. The NICER ephemeris has also been extended through 2020 October and includes three new glitches. PSR J0537-6910 has the largest spin-down luminosity of any pulsar and is highly active with regards to glitches. Analyses of its long-term and inter-glitch braking indices provided intriguing evidence that its spin-down energy budget may include gravitational-wave emission from a time-varying mass quadrupole moment. Its 62 Hz …

Characterization and Tuning of Ultra High Gradient Permanent Magnet Quadrupoles

2009

The application of quadrupole devices with high field gradients and small apertures requires precise control over higher order multipole field components. We present a new scheme for performance control and tuning, which allows the illumination of most of the quadrupole device aperture because of the reduction of higher order field components. Consequently, the size of the aperture can be minimized to match the beam size achieving field gradients of up to $500\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{T}\text{ }{\mathrm{m}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ at good imaging quality. The characterization method based on a Hall probe measurement and a Fourier analysis was confirmed using the high quality electron beam at the M…

Experimental verification of position-dependent angular-momentum selection rules for absorption of twisted light by a bound electron

2018

We analyze the multipole excitation of atoms with twisted light, i.e., by a vortex light field that carries orbital angular momentum. A single trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion serves as a localized and positioned probe of the exciting field. We drive the $S_{1/2} \to D_{5/2}$ transition and observe the relative strengths of different transitions, depending on the ion's transversal position with respect to the center of the vortex light field. On the other hand, transition amplitudes are calculated for a twisted light field in form of a Bessel beam, a Bessel-Gauss and a Gauss-Laguerre mode. Analyzing experimental obtained transition amplitudes we find agreement with the theoretical predictions at a…

Multiple expansions for energy and momenta carried by gravitational waves

2007

We present expressions for the energy, linear momentum and angular momentum carried away from an isolated system by gravitational radiation based on spin-weighted spherical harmonics decomposition of the Weyl scalar $\Psi_4$. We also show that the expressions derived are equivalent to the common expressions obtained when using a framework based on perturbations of a Schwazschild background. The main idea is to collect together all the different expressions in a uniform and consistent way. The formulae presented here are directly applicable to the calculation of the radiated energy, linear momentum and angular momentum starting from the gravitational waveforms which are typically extracted f…

Explicit expressions for totally symmetric spherical functions and symmetry-dependent properties of multipoles

2014

Closed expressions for matrix elements 〈 lm' | A (G)| lm 〉, where | lm 〉 are spherical functions and A (G) is the average of all symmetry operators of point group G, are derived for all point groups (PGs) and then used to obtain linear combinations of spherical functions that are totally symmetric under all symmetry operations of G. In the derivation, we exploit the product structure of the groups. The obtained expressions are used to explore properties of multipoles of symmetric charge distributions. We produce complete lists of selection rules for multipoles Q l and their moments Q lm , as well as of numbers of independent moments in a multipole, for any l and m and for all PGs. Periodic…

Charge-density analysis of 1-nitroindoline: refinement quality using free R factors and restraints

2011

Nitramines and related N-nitro compounds have attracted significant attention owing to their use in rocket fuel and as explosives. The charge density of 1-nitroindoline was determined experimentally and from theoretical calculations. Electron-density refinements were performed using the multipolar atom formalism. In order to design the ideal restraint strategy for the charge-density parameters, R-free analyses were performed involving a series of comprehensive refinements. Different weights were applied to the charge-density restraints, namely the similarity between chemically equivalent atoms and local symmetry. Additionally, isotropic thermal motion and an anisotropic model calculated by …

GROMEX: A Scalable and Versatile Fast Multipole Method for Biomolecular Simulation

2020

Atomistic simulations of large biomolecular systems with chemical variability such as constant pH dynamic protonation offer multiple challenges in high performance computing. One of them is the correct treatment of the involved electrostatics in an efficient and highly scalable way. Here we review and assess two of the main building blocks that will permit such simulations: (1) An electrostatics library based on the Fast Multipole Method (FMM) that treats local alternative charge distributions with minimal overhead, and (2) A $λ$-dynamics module working in tandem with the FMM that enables various types of chemical transitions during the simulation. Our $λ$-dynamics and FMM implementations d…

Recent advances in the development of holey optical fibers based on sulfide glasses

2006

International audience; Microstructured optical fibers as new optical objects have been developed in the recent past years, firstly from silica glass and then from other oxide glasses such as tellurite or different heavy cations oxide glasses. However very few results have been reported concerning non-oxide glasses and more particularly chalcogenide glasses. In a photonic crystal fiber the arrangement of air holes along the transverse section of the fiber around a solid glassy core leads to unique optical properties, such as for example broadband single-mode guidance, adjustable dispersion, nonlinear properties. Since the effective modal area is adjustable thanks to geometrical parameters, …

3D-simulation studies of the modified magnetic multipole structure for an electron cyclotron resonance ion source

2004

Experiments have shown that efficient operation of an electron cyclotron resonance ion source requires that the magnetic field fulfills the so-called scaling laws. In most cases the requirements for the radial magnetic field, i.e. the strength of the magnetic multipole are the most difficult to satisfy. This is due to the fact that the multipole is usually produced from permanent magnets, which makes a value of 1.3 T feasible. One possible solution to increase the multipole field is the so-called Modified MultiPole Structure (JYFL-MMPS). This new idea makes it possible to increase the magnetic field at the places where the plasma flux is in contact with the plasma chamber wall. In this arti…
