Dispersion Theory in Electromagnetic Interactions

2018

We review various applications of dispersion relations (DRs) to the electromagnetic structure of hadrons. We discuss the way DRs allow one to extract information on hadron structure constants by connecting information from complementary scattering processes. We consider the real and virtual Compton scattering processes off the proton, and summarize recent advances in the DR analysis of experimental data to extract the proton polarizabilities, in comparison with alternative studies based on chiral effective field theories. We discuss a multipole analysis of real Compton scattering data, along with a DR fit of the energy-dependent dynamical polarizabilities. Furthermore, we review new sum rul…

Truncated partial-wave analysis of a complete experiment for photoproduction of two pseudoscalar mesons on a nucleon

2013

A truncated partial wave analysis for the photoproduction of two pseudoscalar mesons on a nucleon is discussed with respect to the determination of a complete set of observables. For the selection of such a set we have applied a criterion previously developed for photo- and electrodisintegration of a deuteron, which allows one to find a 'minimal' set of observables for determining the partial wave amplitudes up to possible discrete ambiguities. The question of resolving the remaining ambiguities by invoking additional observables is discussed for the simplest case, when the partial wave expansion is truncated at the lowest total angular momentum of the final state $J_{max}=1/2$. The resulti…

Polarization observables in elastic electron deuteron scattering including parity and time reversal violating contributions

2000

The general formalism for polarization observables in elastic electron deuteron scattering is extended to incorporate parity and time reversal violating contributions. Parity violating effects arise from the interference of $\gamma$ and $Z$ exchange as well as from the hadronic sector via a small parity violating component in the deuteron. In addition we have allowed for time reversal invariance violating contributions in the hadronic sector. Formal expressions for the additional structure functions are derived, and their decomposition into the various multipole contributions are given explicitly.

Pole positions and residues from pion photoproduction using the Laurent-Pietarinen expansion method

2014

We have applied a new approach to determine the pole positions and residues from pion photoproduction multipoles. The method is based on a Laurent expansion of the partial wave T-matrices, with a Pietarinen series representing the regular part of energy-dependent and single-energy photoproduction solutions. The method has been applied to multipole fits generated by the MAID and GWU/SAID groups. We show that the number and properties of poles extracted from photoproduction data correspond very well to results from $\pi$N elastic data and values cited by Particle Data Group (PDG). The photoproduction residues provide new information for the electromagnetic current at the pole position, which …

Dispersion relation analysis of neutral pion photoproduction and electroproduction at threshold

2002

Neutral pion photoproduction and electroproduction at threshold is analyzed in the framework of dispersion relations. For this purpose, we evaluate the real threshold amplitudes in terms of Born contributions and dispersion integrals determined by the imaginary parts of the multipoles of the unitary isobar model (MAID) and the phenomenological partial-wave analysis (SAID). The results show considerable cancellations between Born terms and resonance contributions. Good agreement with the data is found for photoproduction. While our dispersion analysis suggests considerable discrepancies for electroproduction, the present state of the experimental multipole analysis at finite ${Q}^{2}$ does n…

Photodisintegration of the deuteron in the Δ-resonance region

1993

Abstract Photodisintegration of the deuteron in the Δ-resonance region is calculated treating the final state interaction within a N N−NΔ coupled channel approach including explicit pion degrees of freedom. For the electromagnetic interaction the nucleonic one-body current, meson exchange currents and the direct Δ-excitation are taken into account. The γN Δ-coupling is fixed in accordance with the M 1+ ( 3 2 ) multipole amplitude for pion photoproduction on the nucleon. The resulting total cross section underestimates the experimental data for photon energies below 340 MeV, whereas a good agreement is achieved by uaing a modified γN Δ-coupling effectively including the nonresonant Born term…

Threshold π0 photoproduction on transverse polarised protons at MAMI

2015

Abstract Polarisation-dependent differential cross sections σ T associated with the target asymmetry T have been measured for the reaction γ p → → p π 0 with transverse target polarisation from π 0 threshold to photon energies of 190 MeV. The data were obtained using a frozen-spin butanol target with the Crystal Ball / TAPS detector set-up and the Glasgow photon tagging system at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. Results for σ T have been used in combination with our previous measurements of the unpolarised cross section σ 0 and the beam asymmetry Σ for a model-independent determination of S- and P-wave multipoles in the π 0 threshold region, which includes for the first time a direct determination…

Compton Scattering by the Proton

2001

Compton scattering by the proton has been measured over a wide range covering photon energies 250 MeV < E_\gamma < 800 MeV and photon scattering angles 30^0 < \theta^{lab}_\gamma < 150^0, using the tagged-photon facility at MAMI (Mainz) and the large-acceptance arrangement LARA. The data are in good agreement with the dispersion theory based on the SAID-SM99K parameterization of photo-meson amplitudes. From the subset of data between 280 and 360 MeV the resonance pion-photoproduction amplitudes were evaluated leading to the multipole E2/M1 ratio EMR(340 MeV) =(-1.6 \pm 0.4(stat+syst) \pm 0.2(model)%. From all data below 455 MeV the proton's backward spin polarizability was determined to be …

Proton polarization in the p(e,e′p)π0 reaction and the measurement of quadrupole components in the N to Δ transition

1998

The recoil proton polarization in the π0 production off the proton with longitudinally polarized electron beam has been studied as a means to measure quadrupole components in the N to Δ transition. On top of the Δ resonance a high sensitivity to a possible Coulomb quadrupole excitation is found in parallel kinematics. The ratio of S1+/M1+ multipole amplitudes can be determined from the ratio of the two in-scattering-plane recoil proton polarization components. Avoiding the absolute measurement of the polarizations, such a ratio allows small experimental uncertainties. Furthermore, the electron helicity independent proton polarization component enables the characterization of resonant and no…

Excitation of S11 resonances in pion scattering and pion photoproduction on the proton

2002

A self-consistent analysis of pion scattering and pion photoproduction within a coupled channels dynamical model is presented. In the case of pion photoproduction, we obtain background contributions to the imaginary part of the S-wave multipole which differ considerably from the result based on the K-matrix approximation. Within the dynamical model these background contributions become large and negative in the region of the S_{11}(1535) resonance. Due to this fact much larger resonance contributions are required in order to explain the results of the recent multipole analyses. For the first S_{11}(1535) resonance we obtain as a value of the dressed electromagnetic helicity amplitude: A_{1/…
