Measuring High-Order Interactions in Rhythmic Processes Through Multivariate Spectral Information Decomposition

2021

Many complex systems in physics, biology and engineering are modeled as dynamical networks and described using multivariate time series analysis. Recent developments have shown that the emergent dynamics of a network system are significantly affected by interactions involving multiple network nodes which cannot be described using pairwise links. While these higher-order interactions can be probed using information-theoretic measures, a rigorous framework to describe them in the frequency domain is still lacking. This work presents an approach for the spectral decomposition of multivariate information measures, capable of identifying higher-order synergistic and redundant interactions betwee…

Time trends of benign/malignant breast biopsy ratios a multicenter Italian study.

1996

Aims and background Although they have been decreasing over time due to improved specificity of diagnostic assessment, benign biopsies of the breast are still common. Benign biopsies should be regarded as negative events, due to their economical and psychological cost and their possible negative impact on cosmesis and on further diagnostic evaluation. Methods Retrospective data on benign/malignant breast biopsies ratio (B/M) were collected in 9 Italian centers for a period of 10-15 years. The time trend of B/M and its association to age or to single centers was evaluated. Results Overall 31,001 cases were considered. A strong association of B/M to age was evident (average B/M values were 5.…

Development and validation of a novel risk score for asthma exacerbations: The risk score for exacerbations.

2015

BACKGROUND: Identifying patients at risk of future severe asthma exacerbations, those whose asthma might be less treatment responsive, or both might guide treatment selection. OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate predictors for failure to achieve Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA)-defined good current asthma control and severe exacerbations on treatment and to develop a simple risk score for exacerbations (RSE) for clinical use. METHODS: A large data set from 3 studies comparing budesonide/formoterol maintenance and reliever therapy with fixed-dose inhaled corticosteroid/long-acting ?2-agonist therapy was analyzed. Baseline patient characteristics were investigated to determine dominant pre…

Searching for the right timing of surgical delay: angiogenesis, vascular endothelial growth factor and perfusion changes in a skin-flap model.

2009

Summary Background The angiogenic potential of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its oxygen pressure-dependent regulation suggest a strong connection between this growth factor and the ‘delay phenomenon'. In this study we focused on the chronological changes in VEGF concentration and flap perfusion in order to optimise the duration of surgical delay. Methods The VEGF concentration in skin and underlying muscle was measured in oversized, random-pattern flaps on 38 male Sprague-Dawley rats after 3, 5 or 7 days of surgical delay. Additionally, flaps were raised 5 or 7 days past preconditioning. The effect on flap perfusion was measured using indocyanine green fluoroscopy and the si…

Predictors for early readmission after COPD exacerbation

2019

Aim: Identify predictors for early readmission in patients with COPD and severe exacerbation. Material and methods: Prospective study (July 2017-June 2018) that included all patients hospitalized for an acute exacerbations of COPD. Demographic date, clinical and spirometric parameters, arterial blood gases, length of stay, and evolutive parameters were collected. We used univariate and multivariate statistical techniques to identify risks for readmission. Results: 278 consecutive patients were enrolled. During the follow-up 31 (11%) patients were admitted within 30 days of discharge (early readmission). Univariate analysis showed that FEV1 (p=0.02), FEV1 (%) (p=0.01), total dose of steroids…

Multivariate quality control studies applied to Ca(II) and Mg(II) determination by a portable method

1998

Made available in DSpace on 2022-04-28T19:53:14Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 1998-01-01 A portable or field test method for simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of calcium and magnesium in water using multivariate partial least squares (PLS) calibration methods is proposed. The method is based on the reaction between the analytes and methylthymol blue at pH 11. The spectral information was used as the X-block and the Ca(II) and Mg(II) concentrations obtained by a reference technique (ICP-AES) were used as the Y-block. Two series of analyses were performed, with a month's difference between them. The first series was used as the calibration set and the second on…

Evaluación de una Intervención Mindfulness en Equipos de Cuidados Paliativos

2018

Underuse of long-term routine hospital follow-up care in patients with a history of breast cancer?

2011

Abstract Background After primary treatment for breast cancer, patients are recommended to use hospital follow-up care routinely. Long-term data on the utilization of this follow-up care are relatively rare. Methods Information regarding the utilization of routine hospital follow-up care was retrieved from hospital documents of 662 patients treated for breast cancer. Utilization of hospital follow-up care was defined as the use of follow-up care according to the guidelines in that period of time. Determinants of hospital follow up care were evaluated with multivariate analysis by generalized estimating equations (GEE). Results The median follow-up time was 9.0 (0.3-18.1) years. At fifth and…

Psychological Burden in Meningioma Patients under a Wait-and-Watch Strategy and after Complete Resection Is High—Results of a Prospective Single Cent…

2020

The diagnosis of intracranial meningiomas as incidental findings is increasing by growing availability of MRI diagnostics. However, the psychological distress of patients with incidental meningiomas under a wait-and-watch strategy is unknown. Therefore, we aimed to compare the psychosocial situation of meningioma patients under wait-and-watch to patients after complete resection to bridge this gap. The inclusion criteria for the prospective monocenter study were either an incidental meningioma under a wait-and-watch strategy or no neurologic deficits after complete resection. Sociodemographic, clinical, and health-related quality of life and clinical data were assessed. Psychosocial factors…
