Two inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) methods which permit multi-elemental analysis in wine samples have been compared following two strategies. First, a multivariate tool based on principal component analysis (PCA) was employed for a global (all analytes) qualitative comparison of the two methods. A single plot based on the confidence limits of the Q and T2 PCA model statistics corresponding to the ‘standard’ method results (calibration set) was used to check the comparability of the ‘candidate’ method (test samples). The aim of the study was to assess pre-treatment cephalometric parameters and measurements of the size of the apical bases as predictors of successful orthodontic correction of Class III malocclusions. Pre- and post-treatment lateral cephalograms and study models of 80 completed Class III subjects were examined to obtain 23 cephalometric parameters taken mainly from the analyses of McNamara and Schwarz, and to measure the size of the apical bases. A prototype of extractor based on the conventional Soxhlet principles but assisted in the cartridge zone by focused microwaves is proposed for accelerating the extraction of lipids from sausage products. The extraction process has been optimised using a multivariate design involving the main variables influencing the performance of the prototype (namely, irradiation power P, irradiation time T and number of cycles C). Under the optimum working conditions (P=160 W, T=10 s and C=14), the extraction of lipids from different Spanish sausage products is complete in 45 min. A procedure for the evaluation of the wheat flour hardness, based on capillary electrophoresis of a protein extract in an isoelectric acidic buffer, was developed. The 13 flour samples were extracted twice, and two injections of each extract were made.
